Sony has 14 million 'active accounts' on PSN

Sony has 14 million 'active accounts' on PSN photo
     Sony
Yesterday, Sony’s PlayStation 3 turned two years old. In addition to an official posting about the benchmark, Sony’s hardware marketing director John Koller hit fans with some hard numbers, the most striking of which is that 14 million out of a possible 17 million PlayStation 3 owners are maintaining “active accounts” on PlayStation Network.

In addition to the mad amount of subscribers, it was also announced that over 273 million pieces of content have been downloaded. Combine that with the fact that hardware sales are “up nearly 100 percent” and you start wondering if consumers are finally starting to drink the Sony Kool-Aid all over again.

With the Christmas season rapidly approaching, I keep thinking about the kid who is getting a new console. If I were to put myself in his parents' shoes, what would I buy? Ultimately, I don’t have a good answer -- but I do know that I would prefer to buy something that would hang around for a good while. Given the apparent success of PSN and new sales, how would you evaluate the console’s future? Would you buy one for a hypothetical child?

Well I have two accounts, so that really doesn't mean much.

I love my PS3. I have definitely regretted buying my Wii and so many VC titles far more often than I regret buying my PS3 and PSN titles. In fact, I haven't regretted my PS3 purchase since early last Spring, when I didn't have any games so I left it at home for the semester. It's been getting a lot of love lately. My Wii, on the other hand, has not. It could all change in an instant though, just depends on what I get addicted to next. Actually, once I finish building my computer, I doubt either my Wii or my PS3 will get much playtime for a while.

quite impressive.. i suppose it helps that ps3 owners don't have to actually PAY to play games online or anything, but hey, that's just a guess. Microsoft could take a leaf out of Sony's book

@Ron: Not sure if you're talking about this, but I have one normal and one Japanese just in case account for demos and such.

I'm with CWal37, i actually cut off my cable service because i stopped watching tv due to always playing my ps3...I looked over my account and i've spent something like $120 on DLC alone..its just too convinient, when you're sitting at home and you're bored with all your games, just pull up a credit card and DL ratchet and clank quest for booty or Socom or some such..

14 million is quite a lot, especially sine only 17 million units have been sold. I don't have a PS3, yet, but I may not get one seeing as so many games are multiplatform nowadays. I want one and the one thing that may push me over the edge into 'purchasing' territory is if team ICO's next game is exclusive... which it most certainly will be.

Adds up as I have the other 13,999,990 accounts.

I own one and I love PSN. It doesn't get much exposure newswise, but I think it's a great service.

And yes, if I did have a child, and I ddnt have a PS3, I'd buy one - even if I ddnt play games, cause you get the blue ray and I dig movies. It also depends on the age of the child, but I'd say if they were like at least 8 they could find something fun to play on it. I'd like to think my kid would dig lbp, sonic, the lego games, ratchet and clank and motorstorm. Oh and PAIN, with the Hoff.

Free PSN was one of the main reasons why I bought my PS3 over the 360 (reliable hardware was another reason hehe). As a university study who goes home every few weekends, there was no way I would have paid the Live fee to play every so often. It just wasn't convenient for me. Thankfully, the PS3 has more than impressed me. It's also nice that kids yelling racial slurs and swears are nearly non-existent on PSN ^_^

I'll pick a PS3 up when I finish my other 25 games I haven't finish for my ps2. SO that will be most likely be by next summer.

There's more than enough games out there now to make a PS3 purchase worth the money and then some.

I have over 20 games including my PSN games and only like 5 of them are available on other systems.

Actually, I'm one of the people that still holding out on buying a 360. Mainly for the reliability, although my MAIN reason for really wanting a 360 (Culdcept Saga) is quickly fading away with the approach of Culdcept DS!

I'm definitely getting one, maybe for Christmas. One reason - MGS4. That, and the RRoD possibility makes the 360 a big no-no for me, even though I'm hearing that they aren't as common on new models and the replacement service works rather well here. But I just don't want to see another console die on me. I have that Vietnam vet complex for consoles :)

I'm getting one this Christmas to replace my recently busted 360. As much as I'll miss out on Gears 2, free PSN, Blu-ray, and not to mention hardware that lasts more than 2 years make the switch a no-brainer for me.

Plus, LittleBigPlanet, Valkyria Chronicles and Resistance 2 should all be fun exclusives to finally play.

I'll buy a new 360 whenever the next Halo/Bungie game comes out, excluding Recon

I've had a PS3 since launch, I knew they would deliver the goods like they have the last 2 generations. There are so many amazing and diverse exclusives right now it's crazy!!!

I am interested in getting a 360 eventually, but I am holding off until they come out with an even cheaper and hopefully more reliable slim version of it. I just can't invest in something that I have to worry about every time I turn it on.

Xbox FTW IMO.

I think all the Sony users are in Japan or Red China. The majority of the U.S. has to be playing Xbox or watching porn!

PS3 for reliability, games and bluray. It will also last another 5 solid years -the 360 will be outdated in 2.

@Brad Nicholson: PSN accounts include accounts registered on the PS3 and PSP. So add the nearly 40 million PSPs to the 17 million PS3s and you get a more understandable connectivity rate.

For people claiming its about the number of accounts per person. I have 1 PSN account and 3 Xbox Live accounts. Sony and Microsoft are both counting the same way.

Ok, despite the Sony Lovefest further up... and despite the fact that I own a PS3...but because I *am* a parent of small children..

I would get a Wii if there wasn't one already. From my experience with actual kids Fun > sick grafixxx and head asploshunz, and in snowy, nasty weather indoor movement (wii sports) is A Good Thing.

Although personally, as an adult.. I'm loving the PS3. Eden and LBP are my new best friends.

What does it mean to have an "active" PSN account? I've got one, but I've never played on it. Most I've done is send messages.
DemonEyes23's Avatar

yes what does this "active" mean. Cause i've got a jp,us,eruo account though i'm only really on my us account 99.999% of the time. Still i love my ps3 and as far as i'm concerned its doing quite well. You get alot for you money but i'm sure most parents will go for the 360 unless given some other reason. After all its only 200$ which they'll think about before factoring in whatever extras they might need to buy which could easily bring it closer to the price of a ps3. But you know parents chronically uninformed.
