Sony gives Kotaku the finger (update) photo

Sony 1, Kotaku 1

Or I guess depending on how you look at it, maybe Kotaku won. Who knows? But what I do know is that Brian Crecente has big brass balls and my blogger in arms stood up to Sony and seems to have gotten disinvited from every Sony event and basically stripped of his Sony manhood. Here's the story that caused the drama and here's what went down because of it:

When I responded that we were going forward with the story and that sometimes news doesn't come from official sources I was told that if we published we would likely be blackballed by the company.

Specifically, they said we would be asked to return our debug PS3, uninvited from all meetings scheduled with Sony at GDC, including one on blogger relations and a one-on-one with Phil Harrison, and that they would no longer deal with us.

Well, not only that, but Crecente then went on to post Sony's letter saying that they'd be shut out. Check out the entire soap opera after the jump.

Let me say this to Sony, though: You've got a PR problem out there, and picking on a popular gaming blog isn't going to help things. You may want to reconsider this "ban" and realize that we and Kotaku are the present and future and what you're going to have to deal with from now on. By doing this, you're making your company look even worse and more out of touch with today's gaming culture.

I will be meeting with Sony at this blogger event they're holding at GDC. Hopefully, I'll be able to bring their side of this whole mess and more. Stay tuned.

[Update: Sony and Kotaku are friends again. Crisis averted.]

From Sony's Dave Karraker:

Brian, This is an email I was really hoping I would never have to write, but it is what it is. When I came on board here at Sony, I made every effort to be as inclusive as possible to media and the blogging community in an effort to improve previously damaged relationships. This included getting people access to executives, opening our events to more individuals and personally responding as quickly as possible to inquiries. This was done in good faith with the thought that the people I was working with would operate with the same integrity and courtesy I think I demonstrated when I was a reporter. Basically, I went out on a limb for a lot of people -- people SCEA PR and SCEA management had written off. I caught a lot of flack for it from folks, but I felt strongly it was the right thing to do.

I am very disappointed that after trying to work with you as closely as possible and provide you and your team with access and information, you chose to report on this rumor.... I can't defend outlets that can't work cooperatively with us.

So, it is for this reason, that we will be canceling all further interviews for Kotaku staff at GDC and will be dis-inviting you to our media event next Tuesday. Until we can find a way to work better together, information provided to your site will only be that found in the public forum.

Again, I take absolutely no joy in sending you this note, but given the situation you have put me into, I have no choice.

Dave Karraker
Sr. Director, Corporate Communications
Sony Computer Entertainment America

Brian Crecente's response:

Dave, Obviously I disagree with your decision, but it sounds like your mind is made up. I think this only highlights the differences that PR people and journalists have. My interest is not in making sure that Sony has positive news or that the timing of their news is correct, my job only is to inform the readers of news as quickly and accurately as I can. Hopefully, one day this dispute will settle down and you will reopen communication with us. Know this, while I disagree with this decision and think it is a monumental mistake, it will not effect our continuing coverage of Sony and the gaming software and hardware your company makes and supports. Take care, Brian

Barb, I think it's important because it's an issue of free press. Besides the greater issue here is big mega company pushes around a blog. If that doesn't get you riled up, fine, play with your dog.

We'll be the ones concerned over issues of public censorship and kissing corporate ass to make nice-nice so bloggers and review sites are graciously allowed to continue reviewing THEIR games and make money for them. If Sony wants to take a massive shit over a RUMOR of the FIRST good piece of positive news they've had in over 14 months, FINE.

I wonder if there'll be anyone at the event who boos Phil when he's on stage. Video of GDC speeches, Summa or Niero? pls?

This is absolutely terrible. I can only hope that some sort of Slamdance-style backlash comes out of this: Gaming websites should stop covering Sony material.

I know there is money to be made and most sites won't do this, but, from an ethical standpoint, there isn't a game journalist out there that should stand for this.

Crecente has balls... do I see another t-shirt slogan?

@watup, are you retarded. Kotaku is an entire blog site about video game news. it is huge. Brian Crecente is one of the big guys over there, dunno his actual title. But Kotaku is a big deal in the game news realm. So this is a big problem for sony.

why would Sony do something so drastic? they reported as RUMOR. and when companies are then asked about the rumors they are just supposed to say that they don't comment on rumors. instead, they do something like dis-invite kotaku from shit and cutting them off, its fucking ridiculous. Its not like Sony gave them exclusive info with an NDA and told them not to say anything. They got the info from an anonymous source so as a jounalist they have a duty to post this information. FUCK SONY.

I have to admit that my respect for Kotaku went even higher. I already respected them very much for exposing GameLife and showing a little favoritism towards me within it, but yes, I can see Kotaku's dedication to the readers, for the readers.

However, had I been put in that place and Sony had warned me not to post it, I would've saved our relationship by not doing it, just so we could learn more stuff about Sony that we could print.

Admirable, nonetheless.

Way to go Kotaku

My respect for sony has been rock bottom since RIIIIIIIIIIDGE RACEEEEER. theres nowhere for them to go than up IMO.

Although their lil "Playstation Home" takes a page from the competition. I do think if implemented correctly it will be a nice addition for the PS3.

kotaku being banned from ps3 related things obviously didnt happen because of some minor mishappen. lots of other things had to be involved and what he did was all his fault. there's only this heavily publicized report of Phil Harrison announcing a major announcement at GDC and this kotaku dude tells of this "rumor..." sry, i guess i dont know of this kotaku. im not an insane gamer who throws controllers at tvs and worships this kotaku. it obviously wasnt an anonymous source. sony had to clearly state that this info was confidential and then kotaku leaked it out. a big time corporation, sony would not ban some insane gamer's god if it wasnt for a good reason...

Summa really nailed it.

Kotaku and these blogging sites, as non-journalistic mainstream as they are, are the present and the future of how the big company news reaches the average customer or potential customer.

Sony, with this move, just proved they're stuck in time, about ten or so years ago. They just simply need to fire their whole PR department and take on people that know what the fuck is going on.

they did ask nicely not to and you are in a professional relationship, don't know why you would throw it in jeopardy.... i could see it completely unexpected seeing the tons of rumors the site and others post.. kinda add's validity to the rumor of a more elaborate community system, but we'll see next week.

definitely kinda harsh, but i have a feeling they will work it out, and be making out together in no time

We are no 360 fanboys and neither are the dudes on Kotaku. Sony just doesn´t give a fuck about their fans (the 3 that are left).
They should work together with bloggers. And baning Kotaku just because they posted a rumor from a unknown source is just childisch.

Props to Kotaku for this move.

Sony may have been obliged to go this length to maintain their denying the rumour. If they are working with another company to develop this thing then the other company would certainly expect to see Sony going to all possible lengths to maintain secrecy.

As it is Kotaku is going to get a ton of traffic from the Digg stories and Sony will get a lot of press on the blog sites and everybody will be waiting to hear what Phil Harrison has to say. Maybe it will even be enough to overshadow Miyamoto's keynote.

Obviously there's no conspiracy between the two sides, but I bet they both knew what would happen. Sony knew Kotaku would post it and they wont smack 'em down a bit. That way Sony gets the press but their partners accept they did their bit to suppress the rumours.

Kotaku posts its story, is the first to pre-empt the GDC keynote and maintain its independence and desire to post if they feel it justified. They probably also know that in 3 months Sony will rescind the ban and everything will be back to normal.

Its a lame move but Sony probably had to do it, and Kotaku probably knew it.

@wintermute

The simplest way to deny a rumor is to say, "Sony does not comment on rumors or speculation."

By going to these lengths to shut down a story that was being posted as a "rumor," Sony has done nothing but add to the validity of the story.

Interesting comment spotted on Joystiq:

36. KOTAKU WAS AN AFFILIATED BLOG/NEWS SITE WITH SONY AND IS ENTITLED TO BENEFITS LIKE DEBUG UNIT, SPECIAL ACCESSES TO STUFF ETC, BUT THEY HAVE TO FOLLOW STRICT ORDERS FROM SONY, SO IN FACT HE WAS TREATING HIS BLOG AS A REAL BLOG WHEN IT WAS A SONY "CHANNEL" BLOG. SINCE HE DIDNT FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS HE NO LONGER GET SEMI OFFICIAL ACCESSES SO IN ESSENCE HES JUST A NORMAL BLOG NOW HE DOESN'T GET THE EXCLUSIVE CRAP ANYMORE. HE BROKE THE RULES SO HE DOESNT GET THE BENEFITS ANYMORE. so hopefully you guys understand now.... anon

"By going to these lengths to shut down a story that was being posted as a "rumor," Sony has done nothing but add to the validity of the story."

You're right, in the eyes of the fans it does lend credence. But they can take this to the CEOs of their partner and say "Well we are no longer associated with the site that released the rumour".

They's just covering their bases, and these days they seem to have no regard for public image anyway.

That explains quite a bit. Sony was allowing them to post and I guess they broke thier rules. I know various rules apply to lots of items. (I know car stereos so here I go)

My sponsor was talking to me abotu advertising and how most magazines that do a so called "review" are based on who pays them money to do the review. So they are paying for thier product to be reviewed and will obviously end up with skewd results as you dont want to make the person who payed you angry with a bad review as a large company can make your review look like gargabe if they want to, or ban you from attending their events.

I am not saying that Sony was paying them I was just provding an example into a similar topic.

If what Niero said is true, this is a very interesting development. While before this was a freedom of press issue, now it could be a simple contractual non-compliance issue. I sure hope Crecente is the hero we all want him to be.

See, I don't think that's totally the case Niero.

I don't know if you guys have been spiffed for consoles or not, but large media outlets like IGN, Gawker, and AOL ARE going to be given shit because publishers pressure the manufacturer into doing so so they can do previews and reviews of games.

They do that shit all the time so it garners a good relationship between the publisher and the news source. Sony obviously is sick of taking shit from people over this and wanted to be nasty about their big secret to show they mean business, but as usual with them, every thing they do backfires. They're cockheads, seriously.

Aside from doing this to Crecente or to any journalist at all, you DON'T bite the hand of a nerd when you're a media company that caters to them. YOU DON'T. In Japan, those companies go away when they spur the nerds. Sony's done just about as much as they possibly can to dissuade a game fanatic from wanting to even consider a PS3 at this point. MGS4 CANNOT possibly be worth getting yourself into a quagmire over when the company can't even treat it's userbase like this so openly. I don't care if he's a journalist, he's still a person and it's HIS unit they're taking away, not the office one for Kotaku, HIS unit.

If I were Crecente, I'd stop reporting PS3 shit period. Publishing good news about them obviously carries some sort of punitive measure, so it's probably in their best interest to stop publishing stories about them entirely.

I wasn't suggesting that their special "channel" relationship should interfere with their editorial content. That's clearly bullshit and I think we all agree on that. Marketing/sales/pr and editorial completely different functions and we're proud of them for what they did. It definitely took balls. It's obviously well within Kotaku's right to post it as a clearly labeled rumor. I'm amazed Sony did that, but given their shaking history with indie press I'm not that surprised.

Destructoid was invited to some Sony GDC stuff but this will be the first time we sit down with them. Obviously this is an issue we'll be discussing. I wish I had a PS3 dev kit but not at that price!

Anyway, we'll have a lot to cover on the podcast tonight. What a day, eh!
