Sony getting sick of PS3 price cut talk photo

Sony has been weathering calls to lower the PlayStation 3's price for quite some time now, and you can imagine that constant queries about something Sony won't change must take a toll on one's patience. Senior vice president of marketing, Peter Dille, for example, sounds like he's going to scream if somebody asks him just one more time.

"Everybody in the development community would love for the PS3 to be free," he sighs, "so they could just sell razor blades."

That's all very well and good, Mr. Dille, but what I want to know is this -- when will Sony lower the PS3 price!?

Seriously, I think publishers, developers and gamers are wasting their time when they talk about a price drop. When Sony thinks it's right, not even God can tell it what to do, and no amount of pressure will change that. When we do see a price drop, it'll be on Sony's terms, when Sony is ready, and no amount of analyst talk will alter the course.

Sony will just have to get used to all the speculation and demands in the meantime.

I was under the impression that more than a few development companies posted larger profit margins with their PS3 games than 360 (due to higher royalty and XBLA fees I assume)? Does this mean they want more PS3 games being purchased or just more excuse to develop games for the PS3?

I have two questions for Sony

1. Are they ever going to reinstall BC into PS3?
2. If yes is the answer to the first question, when is the price drop?

When you buy a PS3 you're not just buying it for the games that are currently out. You're buying the ability to play the blu-ray games of the future.

You're buying a console with everything you need, if you just want something to play on your own, get an xbox, if you want a casual console to play with the kids, get a wii.

If you want a full High Def, wireless, blue-tooth, blu-ray, games / multimedia machine - fork out for a PS3.

If you look at it, an xbox with all the extra's to bring it close to a PS3 spec (HDD, WiFi, Controller chargers, LIVE etc) will cost MORE than a PS3.

This price drop talk is silly, Sony are selling PS3's at the rate they estimated, sure there are more of other consoles being sold, but sony are on plan with the PS3.

Give it a year and the best games will not fit on a DVD and will not run on competitor consoles, the PS3 WILL be the only option for the best games.

At that point Sony will hopefully have NOT dropped the price and will be able to make some money on this massive investment of theirs.

10 year plan people, i'm pretty sure that plan doesn't mean, sit around and hope we sell more than M$. I'm sure Sony know what they're doing and have plans for the future. PS3 exclusives already PWN Xbox games and i don't see M$ even matching some of the recent PS3 exclusives, let alone beating them! Specially on their little white DVD player.

Just wait and see.

Sony's game is not selling as many cheap ___________'s as possible. Never has been.

You don't get budget priced Sony goods, it's not what they do.

Sony produce the better products and charge more for them, they are not going for the cheap market, or the casual market, they are going for the market that wants and can afford THE BEST.

This has always been Sony's whole point. Top quality at the top price point.

Quality costs. Simple as.

I guess that's what they get for giving you everything you need from the start (except a headset) and not charging you for wireless internet, the ability to play online, and more storage after you've realized that you need them.

@ TKurata - Nice. I too paid £400 ish for my early model and I've already got way more use than would justify the purchase.

The only EXTRA I've ever bought is PlayTV - Which is brilliant. oh and a bluray Remote, mmmm bluetooth one.

As i said above, by the time you've got an xbox up to the PS3 spec (almost) it will cost you MORE.

"Sony produce the better products and charge more for them, they are not going for the cheap market, or the casual market, they are going for the market that wants and can afford THE BEST. "

The big bombshell when the original PlayStation was unveiled was that it would be priced a full hundred bucks less than the Sega Saturn.

The marketing for the original PlayStation involved inviting those who saw gaming as a toy for kids or a hobby for nerds to play some sports games or enjoy the Hollywood-caliber FMVs.

With software on CDs, games were sold for cheaper than they would have on cartridges.

What was your point again?

Also, I owned my PS3 for more than a year, spending 330 pounds on it, so yeah, it was a lot. Then again, it's 330 pounds very well spent.

I think sony will drop the price at xmas, they really can't expect lots and lots of people to purchase it at the current price, it really does need to be cheaper.

It seems only the media and developers think PS3s need a price drop. With sales beating 360 (and even Wii) in some places, the public certainly don't agree, and that's who SONY will be listening to.

I personally think the £300 I paid for mine was a great deal. It's taken over almost everything (except Wii and PS2) in my living room, from playing DVDs, BluRays, Browsing the internet (though Laptop is still more convenient), playing music. Not even mentioning the games.

The more you use a PS3, the more you realise that it's actually pretty cheap. If you use it just for games, then you're missing out.

I do hate to sound fanboyish, but $400 was the best price evar for an unreliable system that was missing features and only supported a dead HD format (if you paid extra for the drive, that is). I really don't see the problem with a PS3 that's $100 more than an Xbox when it comes with so much more and you could burn much more than that $100 getting the 360 up to speed.

The sad truth is that the PS3 is suffering because it doesn't nickel and dime you like the 360. It says something about the more cynical plan of xbox. That said, when will there be a PS3 price cut? They will need a 50 yr life cycle if they don't pick it up. PS2 kept going because it's instal base was already large enough for publishers to stick with it years after it had become outdated. Plan won't work for PS3 lest they get their instal base up everywhere.

The PS3 is the real deal. I get confused when people look at all it does and then demand a price drop. I got mine a little late in the game at $400, but I can safely say that it was worth it. But that is me. If you don't think it is worth it, then don't buy it. What is important to me is that I took a chance on it, and it payed off.

Sony still loses money on each PS3 that they sell.
http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/dec2008/tc20081222_257990.htm

If they lower the price, they may sell more units, but they will incur greater losses, as input costs (not scale) appears to be the issue.

Ergo, they will not cut prices.

A price drop is nice, but as rational animal said they still lose money on every console sold. Less now than before but still a loss. A price drop now, while nice, really doesn't make sense from a business standpoint.

Also to be completly honest I like where its priced now. This is going to sound assholeish but whatever. Its out of the price range of the kind of filth you hear on Live. You know the uneducated assholes spouting racial slurs and profanity every chance they get. I know they exist on the PSN but since there are less people using it there are bound to be less of these people there. And I like it that way. I've experienced both, I played Gears 2 online throughout the holidays and the shit I heard there when compared to the PSN is night and day. Even with a big title like Killzone 2 you'd think it would be terrible as every one of those a-holes would be there, but I haven't encountered one of them yet. But on Live my first time using that service in my second Gears 2 matchup there was a guy where every other word out of his mouth was profanity or a racial slur.

Sony has a lot of people fooled. You aren't part of some exclusive club because you shelled out big bucks for the entrance to Sonyland. The playstation 3 isn't some wonderful transcendent technology that changes your life. It's a fucking game console. Don't worry though, the unwashed masses won't be crashing your exclusive party because the damn thing is too expensive. Yes, I know, if you factor in a whole lot of arbitrary bullshit you don't need and enough LIVE to last a lifetime then the 360 is finally more expensive. Jesus guys, paying more for something doesn't make you cool. It just means you have a higher disposable income. You are getting worse than the people enjoy paying for LIVE and shit on silver members.

I don't get the fuss personally. Sure PS3(80gb) is $400, but an Xbox 360(60gb) + Wireless Adapter is $400 too. If I bought it, thats what I would have to buy for my current set up since the router and modem, and the system would be in two different rooms. And with almost all games coming out on both systems, whats the big deal with the PS3 price? Really? Both systems are on equal ground IMO.

Because I'm really going to trust the opinion of someone who has the RROD as their user picture, does that ever so boring thing of spelling it 'M$' and says blatantly self-delusional things like 'Give it a year and the best games will not fit on a DVD and will not run on competitor consoles, the PS3 WILL be the only option for the best games.' You're a joke, right? Right?

Seriously. The PS3 is a great system and it's getting better but it's still no PS2, and I predict things that hike up the price such as bluray will not be as important as some people like to believe, in the long run.

That's okay Sony, you keep on saying you won't drop the price, I'll keep on saying I won't be buying your console.

I don't need the PS3's media functionality or any of that other shit - I either have something else to do the same job better or frankly don't care. I DO want a games console and, as far as I am concerned, the asking price is too high. Maybe I'll take my chances on eBay noe day, but I like those odds about as much as Sony's attitude.

I don't mind spending the money it is worth now, since I know what I'd be getting. But a price cut wouldn't hurt, unless they drop features that make the whole console appealing. The price drop will come, but it might take years for it to come into effect. I mean, does an NES still cost the $200-ish that it was originally priced, now? I doubt it.

Also, speaking of Blu-Ray players, yes it is true you can get a player for like 200 bucks, possibly cheaper. But are they compatible with games of the same format? I don't know about you guys, but I like getting the most bang out of my buck.

@elsteveo: People keeping throwing in the wireless adapter, because some people NEED a wireless adapter. For some people, its not efficent to run cables throughout the entire house, or they don't have the convience of having and ethernet port in every room of the house. For me, to buy either, I'm going to have to spend the same amount of money. Plain and simple. Why is it such a big deal that people mention that? But thats okay, I'm not real anyway.

Yeah my friends take the piss about me working for Sony, unfortunately i don't. I would give my right arm to work for Sony's PR / Marketing team!

I don't care what your name is, but so what i have RROD as my pic, i think it's funny as fuck that stupid people keep buying xbox's even though they are old, broken tech that ends up costing as much if not more than my beautiful PS3 - My PS3 has replaced EVERYTHING in my living room, Music, PlayTV, internet, Blu-ray, games, EVERYTHING - for less than an Xbox +WiFI +Controller chargers +Live etc etc... I just want to rub it in. M$ is easier to type, and pisses off deluded idiots like you.

Uh, games are getting bigger, Blu-rays hold a huge amount more data than a DVD. Take MGS4, LBP, Killzone 2 - none of these games will fit on a DVD and I doubt an xbox could handle MGS or Killzone so, uh, no I'm not joking. The best games already won't fit on a DVD, so give it 5 more big releases and yes, the BEST games will not fit on a DVD and Xbox users will be stuck with B-grade games.

So uh, no I'm not joking, I'm telling it how it is now. You want to play the best games and can go without that piece of shit Halo - get a PS3. It'll save you money, comes with a blu-ray player, plays the BEST games, and can be a one stop media-hub for your home.

Your point was?

Sony has a lot of people fooled. You aren't part of some exclusive club because you shelled out big bucks for the entrance to Sonyland. The playstation 3 isn't some wonderful transcendent technology that changes your life.

-----------

Uh, it is. I am part of an exclusive club, a club of online gamers, who play for free, a club of more grown up people who play and communicate like adults.

Sure there are some spoiled kids with PS3's, but it's a fraction of the amount of welfare kids who's parents used MY tax money to buy them a cheap ass Xbox for them to shout and swear on.

My PS3 is ALWAYS on - never overheats, never RROD, and it records TV while I'm at work or while I'm gaming, I can turn it on FROM WORK with my PSP and set it to record TV / download stuff. I can stream my music / videos / small games on my PS3 via WiFi to my PSP. Not to mention the fact that it plays the very best games and is set to accomodate the games of the future. Did I mention the Blu-ray player? I love High Def movies! I'm a hardcore gamer, it has changed a massive part my life for the better.

Read some of the comments above kiddo, it's not big bucks either. It costs the same if not less than a similar spec Xbox. If you've bought an Xbox, you're the one who's been fooled. Fooled into buying broken old tat in a pretty white box that is near as dammit obsolete. A modern VHS if you like.

Just because "all my mates have one" and "it's cheap" (at least the first of many payments is cheap)

You can call my a Fanboy, I am, this is my sport and i'm a Sony Supporter, although I don't support them because it's all I can afford to shell out in one go, I support them because they're innovative, envelope pushing, FAIR, loyal and don't try to nickel and Dime me. not to mention that I don't want to buy another console when all the best games are too big for DVD's!!!

So, uh, yeah, IMHO the PS3 is wonderful transcendent technology that changes your life. It is a household entertainment system, entertains the whole household reliably, quietly (snikker), and at a totally reasonable price.
