Sony gets into the in-game advertising business photo

Sony has created a new department that is essentially an internal in-game advertisement company.  That means that Sony will now be making ads for use in Sony software and products, like the upcoming virtual PlayStation world Home and the PlayStation Network.

Sony is a huge company, and they have plenty of products from their games, electronics, music, and movies divisions that they'd like to pitch to us, but they'll also be working with outside companies to sell virtual ad space.

This new unit will be headed up by Darlene Kindler, who was formerly employed by Irem, Data East, 3dfx Interactive and even Nintendo. Kindler will also be the go-to person that third-party publishers and other external companies would contact to get their ads in Sony's products.

You didn't think that they'd leave the walls and signs of Home blank, did you?

Cool, it makes games seem semi-more realistic.

As long as I don't have to take like, Burger King Whopper commercial breaks.

All for it if games drop back into the 50bux range, else i'll accuse them of some serious money cow milking. Seriously, considering the mass market the 'good' games reach, i'm assuming the royalty buy-in for your ad in a game would pay quite a few developer salaries. So at very least pass on something to the consumer.

Advertisements are only good if they are convincingly placed into the world and seem like they belong there. Developers need to tailor their ads to blend in or else people are going to scream bloody murder.

You guys remember the in-game adverts in Planetside?

It's completely unrealistic for a television in a futuristic military base to be playing the trailer for Spider-man, but it was good for some chuckles. And since it was only in the home bases and never in the areas where actual gameplay takes place, it didn't bother too many people.

Personally, I did not mind the ads in Battlefield 2142. They all mostly fit the color scheme for game, and there weren't that many, most were just "recruiting" posters for the games armies, or offers for vacations to the game's virtual locales. And the ads were there weren't stupid at all, pretty much just ads for intel processors or Discovery channel -Futureweapons.

I do not mind in game ads at all as long as they are done tastefully. No pop ups or subliminal advertising, you know? Pasted logos on walls and maybe even little watermarks in the menus would be fine, as long as Master Chief doesn't take his helmet off to reveal the Burger King.

If it was OK for them to do it on Xbox Live (including paid accounts) I don't see what's wrong with doing it to Home, especially since it's a "free" service.

Anyone who says in-game advertisements are OK is out of their mind. I can handle appropriate licensing, like in Gran Turismo, but when a game like Skate tries to cram Adidas shit down my throat like its feeding me toasted marshmallows, I become irate. At least gimme some option..... Pay 10 dollars less for the game, but have ads, or buy the special edition and have NO ads. Plenty of money gets made on these games guys, dont be fooled into thinking these ads are necessary. THEY'RE NOT.

Pipe your PS3 through your PC, and edit HOSTS file.

Problem solved.

OH JESUS THE PICKLE GUY... we had to watch a video with him in it for orientation at work. I'm still not sure why, but it was hilarious. I should see if it's up on Google Video.

That's a big waste of money. I love Pepsi already.

In-game ads just have to be realisticly placed, and they're fine.

Realistically speaking, I don't think in-game advertisements will ever bring down prices of normal releases. Perhaps in some situation where a game is completely developed around an advertisement, but otherwise I highly doubt it. Any and all profits will be most likely be consumed by the publisher.

Personally, I hate in-game ads, and if they are a detriment to the environment that the game attempts to create, then I will vote with my wallet. I hope the reviewers do us a favor and warn us of ad-happy games so we can avoid them.
