Sony finished crucifying our souls, now hangs our viscera on barbed wire photo

Oh, Sony, why must you toy with us?

Let's have a recap of today's rollercoaster, shall we?

First David Reeves of Sony Europe let slip that our somewhat-relieving price drop on the 60 GB PS3 was more like a liquidation sale , a discount on a console they planned to stop making in America once supply sold out. Then, reps for SCEA stepped up to distance themselves from the comments of their European counterparts, saying Reeves' statements were "not accurate."

In the latest tissue-wringing, head-slapping, sigh-inducing installment of the drama, we have this video (I fail at finding an embed code for this, so just click the link), wherein Kaz Hirai essentially states that indeed, the 60GB PS3 is no longer in production after the discounted supply is exhausted. Start at about 1:30 or so, and then just let it ride your skull like a jackhammer of failure.

I swear, Sony's like the abusive husband I just can't leave. My mom calls me; she wants me to know it's okay to come home. She's worried about me, and I tell her no; no, Mom, he's not always like this. In the silence that follows her melancholy sigh on the other end of the phone, I disconnect the call, to hide and cry in my Metal Gear Solid 4-themed bathroom until I hear Sony cursing and breaking bottles and wondering why I'm not in the kitchen.

[Many tips for this one-- thanks, everyone.]

why the fuck do you people consider this a big deal? this will have almost zero effect on negative sales. this will make the ps3 spike in the states on this "news."

first you have the europeans and americans disagreeing over whether or not this announcement has validity -- the two continents hardly ever work together in their divisions.

second, you want games, you got a boatload of announcements. do you honestly care if you already have a ps3?

third, if you don't already have one, guess now's a good a time as any to get one.

just funny how many people bitching and complaining, discussing how sony is lying and what not when right outside your house there is that ps3 @ $500,

"omg sony fooled me to get a PS3 now!" dude, if u ever plan on getting it, just get it.

Folklore, MGS4, heavenly sword, pain, warhawk, the games are there and coming, so just buy it or dont buy it. Dont expect Sony PR to come with a golden aura coming at you with a $300 PS3 and 10 free games and saying were sorry for all the bad PR, here, have my 401k savings. its not going to happen in at least the next 2 years if it ever is.

PR people are thiefs and liers, ALL of them, they will tell you anything to buy their product, If you think that Moore, Ken, Harrison, Reggie, Hiraki, any of them are sweet angels, you are fooling your selfs. MS with 4 friggin RROD consoles, PS3 with a big price tag, nintendo with low wii shipment and breaking everything in your house while you play. all of them have flaws, not one survives to be the perfect console.

its simple, buy the PS3 @ $500 or @ $600 or dont buy it, take your pick. no lies, no tricks, it is that simple. Just like Aex said, get it because YOU want it, not because of what bad PR tell you to go get it.

Crunshii, there is more to it than that. People were thinking "Yeah, maybe Sony can pull themselves out of the toilet now that they actually understand that $600 consoles don't sell".

Now everyone's thinking "Why the hell are they going back in the toilet? Don't they know it's stinky in there?"

People dedicated enough to video games to end up on this site don't just care about their own in the moment enjoyment of video games. They care about who is going to "win the war", who's philosophy on gaming will be the dominant force, shaping what kinds of games are made for years to come. And when Sony keeps screwing up like this, it makes a lot of people worried (or happy) that their concept of what gaming should be will die. It makes their "Fear (or hope) of a Wii planet" all the more intense.

And some other people were hoping to be able to buy a $500 PS3 when ever they want, not just while suplies last.

I can't bring myself to buy a console that has no good games yet, no matter how low or how temporary the price drop.

So, let me get this straight... You are going to sell your PS3 due to news that has absolutely nothing to do with you... I mean it is not like this phase out is going to affect you one way or another...

Seriously, It is just poorly handled PR... That is all, get over it already. Everyone is starting to make this out like it is the end of days.

Tho, it was such a STUPID move to ruin everything they just did at e3 in one fell swoop.

im considering selling the damn thing because i it looks like its going to fail HARD , but then again im a sony fan and like sony i might change my mind tomorrow , the fact is i dont want a console that apart from loosing exclusives after this dread news might be losing the right to have games at all.

but i agree with you when you say im overreacting , but i am worried

They never called it a price drop.. Jack Trenton even said it was the media that first called it that. Jack said they were rearranging SKUs.. Now that everyone thought there was a "price drop" people are getting pissed it's going away. Jack said guys, Jack said.

think of it this way -- they introduce the 80GB version in korea (to test the market so they say and it's cheaper than the 60GB version originally compared to the price in the states - roughly $540). the knock off a hundred off the 60GB version in the states. they introduce the 80GB version in the states at the same price as the 60GB was orginally. they want to get rid of all the 60GB. they sell off the 60GB versions.

in the near future once the 60GB versions are sold off, they knock a hundred off the 80GB models.

but really -- what is the big deal that they are getting rid of the 60GB? why keep the emotion engine when emulation works much better?

Did the PS2-era Sony somehow get replaced with the Sony from Bizarro World? They seem to think that destroying consumer respect for their brand is a good thing. I'm almost to the point now where I wouldn't get a PS3 even if MGS4 and FFXIII remain exclusive to it.

It's sad that such a potentially awesome machine is being handled by a bunch of total cretins. God damn.

I like Crunshii's rampant Sony fanboyism, it's refreshing. I mean it is Nintendo's fault that people are dumb, right? It's also Nintendo's fault that theres more demand than they can turn out, right? I'm not buying a 360 until the Falcon chips hit because of the RROD. But at least M$ lives up to their problems, and doesn't tell it's consumers 3 different things in one day.

I was just thinking...if they discontinued production of the 60GB already, but "will have ample supplies of both models to meet the needs of our consumers for the foreseeable future" how many unsold PS3 must they have? 60 gajillion?

Hey guess what, if you want a 60 gig ps3, buy it. No harm in that, they're $100 cheaper. If the local store doesn't have any, buy something else, a wii or a 360, or you could go for the cheaper 20 gig or the more expensive 80 gig ps3. It's really that simple. I don't see why people are mad, the price cut is still in effect. As long as there are 60 gig ps3's available for purchase, anyone will be able to get it $100 cheaper. People are thinking that after they announced the price cut they took every 60gig ps3 off the market. With ps3's selling the way they are, I'm sure there are more than enough to go around.

It's not that I think that they took all of the 60 GB's off of the shelves, its that they essentially put a gun to people's heads and said "you've got a month, maybe two, then its back to 600." Its a pressure sale, its sure as shit not a pricedrop.

Just because it doesnt have the emotion engine. Doest mean it will cripple backwards compatibility. They will probably have system updates. So that you can play all of your ps1,ps2 games. Not having the emotion engine puts it down like 20% for bc.

But if there really stopping the 60gb model thats fucking stupid on there part.

I just recently bought a 360. After the recent announcement of the $100 price cut, I started to seriously consider purchasing a PS3. However, I didn't plan to buy it until around Christmas or perhaps November. If no $500 units are available at that time, I'm not so sure I will fork out the extra $100 for the newer unit. For me, this move makes me sit on the fence rather than making me rush out and buy a PS3. Sony might have been better off by announcing this pinheaded move after their supplies started to dwindle and bask in the rare afterglow of affection that was generated earlier this week.

The 60gig ps3 is not being price adjusted back to $599. Analysts can predict all day about when the 60 gig will run out, be it one month from now or 9 months from now, but the truth is this - you'll be able to buy it for $499 as long as they are available.

So Sony's "price cut" was just a clever lie to liquidate their stock of the less profitable sku, and justify the PS3 staying at $600. That is teh gay. Sorry, but it was all slight of hand to make an additional 20GB of space and a lackluster racing game look like they're worth $100, they're not.

Great find on the video. So it is true, even though SCEA has denied it. Maybe the press on this will be so bad they'll be forced to lower the 80gig model to $499. I still won't be buying one for a while, I have a list of 30 games coming out for the 360 this fall. That will keep me busy well past the new year, hell just getting Mass Effect will keep me busy for a couple of months. Excuse me, I have a bank to rob.

If Kaz Kutaragi himself were to float down on a cloud of pixie dust, with a solution to world hunger, AIDS, and a cute kitten for everyone, I'm sure most of the Destructoid readership would find something to bitch about.

Christwagons, Artadius, where the hell did I ever diss Nintendo, let alone write about them?.

I'm just saying is that the (simple) logic behind all the Sony hate, from all the fuming internet posts and stories and blogs on the intarwebs, is that it's cool to hate Sony, ie, it's baseless and puerile at best. Regardless of what gamers think, Sony is going to act in their best interest.

Regarding Nintendo, I don't feel the need to praise them - I already showed them plenty of affection when I shelled out 300 bones for a Wii and a copy of Zelda. BTW, it's a great system.

I'm not biased; I just call it how I see it; this blind hatred for a video game console is a fucking disgrace.

http://www.destructoid.com/there-will-be-no-imminent-ps3-price-cut-according-to-sony-s-president-34460.phtml

who put the word pricecut in their mouth b4 it even happened. oh right, us. President said it before there wasn't going be no pricecut.

Look how many haters have posted on this thread lol its ridiculuous. Their doing an upgrade to the system + a game, and doing a favor to those who want a PS3 now, and this is how you give them thanks for that?

Sony should have just removed the emotion engine, kept it @ 60g, no game and no 60g pricecut And just mention the games on e3 and nothing else, too many hypocrite's that dont appreciate something when its given to them.

and Kintaeb, "But at least M$ lives up to their problems, and doesn't tell it's consumers 3 different things in one day."

yea right, keep telling your self that buddy, sorry but If you believe those new chip sets are the answer to the problem, think again, your being tricked by false PR man, again, Dont be fooled by PR promises.

You think all current 10million worldwide xbox360's are going to be called in and replaced? lmfao, sure right. Those consoles are here to stay, refurbished until the lifespan of the 360 fades out. even with new chipset, if those chip get RROD, u will send ur console for warranty, and guess what your going to more than likely get back a refurbished old 360, like every1 else now.

Thats the price MS payed for rushing production on the 360 unlike nintendo and Sony took the time at least, at least not to have hardware failure at a ridiculous % like MS.

MS is accepting the problem because it is out of their hands, they dont fix the problem, they outsource it and hope it lasts.

"Yea, 500 dollars to play ratchet and clank. That's not lame at all. And Killzone looks prettier, but the gameplay looks more generic than matt damon. And about the backwards compatability, because of the lack of the emotion engine and only emulation software, we're going to now be experiencing all of the wonderful freezes and glitches that plague the PAL territory PS3's. So that's swell. It's not like the only good games for the PS3 are PS2 games, rite? Sony is so flatout fucking obnoxious its actually pissing me off rite now, which is a real hard thing to do. Actually, I don't know if its sony thats pissing me off, or if its the people who see all of the bullshit, ignore it, and then talk about how awesome killzone looks. In life, it pays to make decisions based on what you know about your options. I'm fascinated by people who supposedly have brains and eyes and a connection between the two who can look at everything we all know and still suck sony's dick." -Brock_Dainjer-

Look dude, people want to play video games that aren't for children. That puts you with either A.The console that Red Rings if you look at it cross-eyed. or B.A console that costs more than most are willing to pay.

Is this just your opinion??... I seen that they are putting in new cooling solutions (as evidenced by people opening their boxes upon return to them).
Also, i have heard reports of people being told that they are going to get their 360 back with "new transistors"... i can only guess 65nm.

SO, it does look like they are actually DOING something with them.... Look stuff up before you go off... Many of us are considering toweling our 360s just to get the new stuff...

- sony didnt want to announce a price cut... but it leaked and had to admit to it anyways

- sony didnt want anyone to know that the 60gb was discontinued... but their europe division didnt read the memo and leaked it

i'm sure they had a great plan to ease the public in to the "bad" news... but they screwed up

conclusion: sony is a disorganized company and a disorganized company's so called potential is not worthy of my $600 (or $500)... no matter how shiny their trailers seem to be.

hey all im saying is, if they accepted all consoles are defective, why not a recall & give the owners a fixed xbox? not another refurbished one.
