Sony FINALLY confirms in-game XMB, trophies in upcoming system software update photo

The time is nigh, fellow PS3 owners: Sony has, at last, officially confirmed that two long-awaited (and long-rumored) PS3/PSN features -- in-game friends list and messaging access, and “trophies” -- will be coming in a future system software update! It won’t be the very next one; that update, v2.36, will be another one of those vague “improves system stability when playing ___” patches. But the update that’s ‘on double deck’, to use an esoteric baseball analogy, is the big one: v2.40.

In addition to providing those two major features, it’ll have “some other new enhancements” as well, according to Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations. Lempel also says that Sony will soon be giving us more details on these upcoming updates at the PlayStation.Blog, so watch that space in the coming weeks.

As far as in-game XMB is concerned, all I can say to Sony is this: It’s about damn time. The trophies are certainly a nice bonus, and if Sony implements a system that’s akin to the Xbox 360’s Achievements, they’d definitely attract a lot of new gamers (*cough* Necros *cough*). But I’ve been waiting for in-game XMB access ever since I bought my PS3 nearly a year and a half ago -- it’s really something they should’ve included from the start or patched in ages ago, but I’m glad it’s finally coming.

Perhaps Jim’s “Xbox Exodus” is also at hand...?

@loki d20: I didn’t say it could have been implemented earlier; I said it should have. You’re absolutely right: I have no idea whether or not Sony’s software engineers had the ability to put this in before now.

But when I say “should have”, I mean that in-game access to friends list and messaging is a feature that has always been the major feather in Microsoft’s cap when it comes to Xbox Live’s superiority over the PSN. Sony has been lagging behind MS for this entire console generation, and this feature is a big selling point for people “in the know”.

Samit, you just proved my point. Sure, MS has a history with this and got it in early. But you know what, they have their issues as well. They just got lucky that people don't care about quality hardware and instead only care about getting online and fragging others. Sony on the other hand has a freaking stable product with a much longer half-life than the 360 and won the format war for HD in less than two years when people thought it would take a few more.

Meeting what XBL has and getting developers to stop being pansies about coding for a new system architecture are Sony's last two milestones. They've accomplished some other amazing stuff along the way.

So, I stand by what I said, and I never said that you claimed to say that it could I was just covering all elements of the argument, with that it's preposterous for you to say it should have been implemented already. Heck, MS is already looking to the next generation of their console and is still experience a high rate of failure with their current generation of consoles while Sony is just getting people to realize the potential and power of theirs.

It's like saying Sony should have had everything working at 100% upon release with at least 20 games for people to play. It's unrealistic, it's ignorant, and it's just annoying to see consumers say such things without realizing the hurdles they've overcome as well as the amount of time they have put into making their system a quality product that will last more than just a few years.
