Sony files patent on something that looks like a PSP iPhone photo

Sony Ericsson's newly patented Orientation based multiple mode mechanically vibrated touchscreen display looks like the long-time rumored PSP phone. But it has a touch screen. Yeah, I don't quite get it either.

Not suprisingly, this device packs in every gaming and gadget tech idea out there. Shiny touch screen? Check. Accelerometer? Check. It makes calls and it plays games. It has a haptics tactile feedback mechanism, which replaces the need for real buttons. Oh, and it has vibration right out of the box!

Sony Ericsson makes their goals pretty clear in the patent application. They say that they "set out to mimic the look and feel of the popular Sony Playstation Portable" in one mode. And, on top of being a gaming phone, this device will also work as a camera, internet browser, and music player. Wow!

And, to stop the inevitable "iPhone rip-off" cries, Unwired View notes that Sony Ericcson has been working on this idea since 2006.

This sounds like a pretty nifty device, but I will say that I don't own a iPhone because I need my buttons! But, with game design changing through Apple and Nintendo's innovations, this may really be the future for portable gaming.

What about you? Would you rock this device?

One word: N-Gage

The n-gage didn't fail because it was trying to mix a phone and a handheld gaming system. It failed because they had no support, and the platform was shit (Oh yeah, also because you had to take out the battery to put a fucking game in.)

If sony keeps the same internal hardware, or improves upon the existing internal hardware of the PSP, with their third-party support and solid first-party titles, it's just ridiculous to try to shrug this off as another N-gage.

I was simply being facetious. Though I do feel that in packing all these things in one device will inevitably lead to a drop in quality in some of the areas.

Let's hope that's not the case. Personally, it's not something I'd buy in to because I have a cell phone, and have no interest to use my gaming device as a phone. However, I'm intrigued to see if they will use the cellular radio for wider coverage infrastructure gaming. I'm not always in a wifi hotspot when I feel like gaming online, or accessing online elements of a game.

I dub thee, "Psiphone."

I wonder what use there is for an orientation sensing mechanism... Is that in case we're too lazy to turn the thing 90-180 degrees to read what's on the screen?

combining sony/ericsson's sub par telephones with sony's sub par portable gaming device! this is a match made in mediocrity!

An excellent idea. If home brew is as easy as it is with the pizzle, I'm all on it like white on rice.

That's actually pretty cool. I really like Sony Ericsson phones, but I have Verizon and we don't get love from all of the sweet GSM phones.

The pseudo-thumbstick needs to be moved away from the lower corner... PSP cramps my style because of that. yeah i'm not getting one, but one day at ebay for around $50, i would get it. I'm finally going to upgrade my cell to a RaZR from an inch thick LG... yeah who cares right now, this is the future, they MIGHT create the PSP phone, the patent just says it was their idea first.

@ galagabug - Dude, get a fucking clue.

This seems pretty interesting. The thing is, this phone could find itself in the same situation as the PSP. It could be great but it won't match the greatness of the already purported iPhone (or, DS).
