Sony explains the reasons behind the PS3 backwards compatibility cut photo

Gamers are already raising a stink over the removal of backwards compatibility in the upcoming lower priced 40GB PS3 model we just found out about. Ray Maguire from Sony UK thinks that the money and effort spent on backwards compatibility could be better spent at this time.

"As we come to our first Christmas with the PlayStation 3 there's going to be about 65 games in the marketplace," says Maguire, "so we feel now that there's sufficient choice in the marketplace and that we're still better off using that money that we'd put into backwards compatibility in either investing in new games or using that money to help support bringing the price down so that people can get into the franchise."

Maguire also feels that while backwards compatibility was important in the beginning due to lack of games, "few really use it," and that effort would now better be used to support hardware price cuts to actually get PS3s in homes.

The Eurogamer article makes no mention of Sony throwing down the "everyone already has a PS2" card, which would have been a fairly strong play.

I'm not buying a ps3 any sooner than the rest of you so this might not matter...but BC was a huge deal when the PS2 came out. and it was such a big deal that everyone boo'd the 360 because it didnt have a working system of BC. so here we are a year into the ps3 and there is no firmware updates that could utilize BC? Is there no software that sony has that can properly emulate a ps2 game? heck get 4 hackers and sit them in a room with a case of Mountain Dew and bags of Doritos and it'll be finished by the end of the week.

heck i still play my tony hawk underground and DoA3 on my 360...it'd be a shame that I couldnt play FFX and Disgaea on my PS3 (when i choose to buy one)

People are missing the whole damn point. WHY THE FUCK DO THEY HAVE TO REMOVE BC? It's not necessary, and a lot of people want it. I should not have to choose which system to buy based on its BC. How many clueless dolts are going to buy the system, eventually pop in a PS2 disc and say, "WTF, Sony?" Get with it, folks. This is a downgrade. Fuck Sony. They're already a pain in the ass as it is, now they want to add to it? Screw them.

Incidentally, this doesn't effect me right now. Or ever. It's stupidity like this that turns me off to Sony products.

Wow...So much bitching and complaining. Most of it not even worthy of response. No BC (-$100) is an OPTION. If you don't like it, and BC is worth $100 to you, just get a current version. If I didn't already have a PS3, this would be a sure-thing for me, as I could care less about PS2 games (welcome to 2007).

All of you guys that are SO visibly upset over this, even if the PS3 was gold-plated and had an extendable arm that came out to wipe your ass, you still probably wouldn't get one. If you WANT to hate something enough, you'll find a way no matter what.

Get a job, spend less time whining here, and you'll have more than enough to buy (or not buy) any model of PS3.
