I've been seeing gaming on these 3D televisions for a couple of years now at the Consumer Electronics Show. It seems to get more of a spotlight each year. This year is supposed to be the biggest year for the in-home 3D tech, and I expect this week's CES to be packed with demonstrations from all the major manufacturers. I'm already seeing double, and I'm not even there yet.
Sony thinks the big boom for the tech will come in a couple of years. You can relax, early adopters.
"We don't expect to see an explosion of 3D in the home until the 2012 time frame," says Mike Fasulo, chief marketing officer for Sony Electronics.
Until then, Sony is working to beef up their broadcasting equipment, movie studios, and more for the change. Of course, the consumer electronics they make are also getting the upgrade, PlayStation 3 included.
The rest of the BW article bitches about the "high price" and limited sales projections of tech that hasn't even come out yet. Whatever. The LCD TVs we all game on were once over $10,000 a piece. 3D gaming is coming, like it or not.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Hopefully we can have turn-off options for these gimmicks in the future because I'm really fearing it.
while most 3D utilization follows your depiction, be careful. Some, such as in Avatar, were enhanced and praised due to what you and I would call "good" 3D; it was truly remarkable.
Sorry for the poor comment, lol iphonez
Seeing the title of this article inspired me.
It's just like using "realistic" animation in all parts of a movie: sure, some crazy people will use it, but...unless someone makes something that shows that it can a.) be awesome and b.) can be more awesome than something done traditionally, it'll remain a niche market.
Has anyone forgotten the last few Sony-backed invents that went down the crapper less than 2 years after their introduction? They said the UMD and MemoryDisk would be the future too. And we would all be using Walkman's and such.
Besides, I'm not wearing any goofy glasses to watch TV. That's just annoying.
Damn, you beat me to it...
well, it must be the same people from sony who also expected us to pay $600 for bluray player with little games at the time.
BTW, 3D gaming is not the only thing that is going to "blow up" come 2012.
I don't dislike it because i'm resistant to change, I dislike it because it forces my eyes to focus a certain way that HURTS. I can see why a deaf person would take issue with full voice and no subtitles, I can see why someone with a crippled arm might not enjoy a Wiimote so much. Sometimes its not about preference so much as what you live with.
Having bad eyesight is something pretty common, though, so I don't see this going over very well.
How can younot trust this man?
Oh wait...sorry...that's what comes up when you Image Google George Noory.
I think it will be an option. Don't worry about it changing gaming or tv. It will always be niche until they develop a way to not use glass and get the same effects.
Beat me to it too. Damn.
Let's just say, if a company makes a tv, makes games, makes DVDs, there will be 3d glasses at their booth. It is HUGE this year. I have seen 3d Star Trek, live 3d home movies, and yes I have played Avatar the game and Dirt 2 in 3d. I want it so flipping bad.
One of the best parts of gaming, is being a spectator, 3Dtv is not going to allow this, the way we can right now in the same way. So those enjoying you play Uncharted 2 and God of War, will need their own, and another barrier is put up against everyone enjoying games.
What the point in this if its going to devolve gaming to a solitary pursuit again? Its because they are really doing this to push a flagging film industry, and I for one think its going to bomb, not matter how good it looks.
Do you realize how expensive 3d-screens that dont require polarized glasses are?
Have fun waiting 10 years for the price to come down to our current LCD tv prices.
I for one, wont give a damn until then.
Also, can we drop this bullshit about "immersion"? Seriously, what has that to do with video games? You sound like a child.
Cheap shizzle is cheap. (Assuming you don't mind the glasses solution.)
Probably crap as well but meh.
