Sony: Exclusive ads and content are the new battleground photo

The age of third party exclusives is coming to an end, with fewer and fewer publishers remaining loyal to a single platform. Sony is well aware of this, and publisher relations VP Rob Dyer believes that exclusive content and advertising, like we saw with Batman: Arkham Asylum, is the new front of the console war.

"Exclusives just aren't as commonplace as they were during the PS2 days," says Dyer. "What is going to be the driving force is either exclusive ad campaigns, like the Madden campaign, or exclusive content like we had with Batman.

"The PS3 version outsold the 360 version, and what we've said to [developers] is 'If you take advantage of what the PS3 can deliver -- more content on the Blu-ray disc, better graphics, being able to get more of what the player wants onto the disc -- you're going to see those sales translate.' [EA Sports and Eidos] would both tell you that by focusing on PS3 and its virtues and what it provides, it translated into much bigger sales and bang for the buck.

"So what we've been doing is going to publishers and using that as our basic story, and going after exclusive content. You're going to see a lot of that, and for example, you're seeing it now with Dante's Inferno. EA had the collector's edition only on PS3. They filled up that Blu-ray disc and were able to do a lot more that they couldn't with 360. The consumer is starting to understand that -- there's a lot of cross-ownership between PS3 and 360, and so we're now trying to differentiate that and give that consumer a reason to buy the PS3 version instead of the 360 version."

It's been clear for a while that little exclusive ad deals and extra content is the way in which Microsoft and Sony are trying to entice consumers now, and Sony has certainly made some impressive gains. The Joker levels in Batman made the PS3 version a de-facto exclusive, while the Dante's Inferno collector's edition was a smart move. This is definitely the way the console wars are heading now, whether you like it or not.

PS3 Better Serves Publishers Than 360, says Sony [Industry Gamers]

PS3 = moar bang for your buck
360 = moar bucks for your bang, well not quite a bang, more a "poof" unless 360's bang when they RROD? I dunno.

Bring it fuckwits.

If it means we'll actually see more content being made, great. However my fear is it just means one version will get the same content as it always would have while the other will be neutered (like XBL gold/silver). Or there's fun like timed exclusive content being locked on the disc and keys being released later as DLC, like we had with Soul Calibur IV and the Star Wars characters.

Microsoft seems to be "winning" in the exclusive content department.

I wish they would buy Shenmue though.

I've always thought exclusive content on multi plat games was bullshit no matter what side its on but I guess that's just the way it is now isn't it.

But its good ti see sony fighting back, unless you provide incentives your average multiplat dev won't put blue rays extra space and the ps3s extra power to use, time for that to change, and I'm happy to see them taking steps twoards fixing that.

Meh, I still play my 360 more, but it usually comes down to my preference for the 360 controller, more friends on Live, and graphical differences on multiplatform titles (bluray doesn't help if the PS3's gimped RAM means a choppier frame rate).

Regardless, it's not in the PUBLISHERS interest to maximize he potential of ANY console. It's in their interest to release every game on as many platforms as possible, with as little difference between those platforms as possible.

Developers aren't looking to make some customers happy and alienate others. They don't care about the console war. They just want to make money, and unless Sony or MS is padding their pockets, that means reaching as many customers as they can.

Translation: Microsoft sold a shit-ton more GTAIV because of exclusive DLC so now we are going to attempt to do the same thing on PS3.

But I'm sure someone will say this is a GOOD thing now that Sony are going to do it.

I think TIMED excusive DLC is a cunt-move, Sony, MS, doesn't matter it's a cunt-move.

Now, PURE exclusive content is another matter, but TIMED exclusive is a complete cunt-move.

Exclusives, well if I was a developer I wouldn't want to shot myself in the foot by limiting my potential sales market. If console developers have to restrict content to get people to buy a system what's that say about the system? That is has no real advantage over the other console.

You read my mind, choccles.

I don't care either way. Timed, or console esclusive. If you super-duper care, you'll need both consoles, and lots of gamers got that route. If you just like to play games, you're more than catered for on either console.

Indeed Chaos. Caring too much about exclusive DLC is for the super-hardcore almost nerdlike gamers.

Sure, TIMED exclusive DLC fucking pisses me off, there's no fucking need other than to mislead your customers, but out and out exclusive DLC is vaguely acceptable in this day and age.

Not surprising really, but I was kinda shocked that Arkham Asylum on the PS3 outsold the 360 version even with the exclusive content. Just the install base for the 360 alone I thought that would have trumped it. But its a mixed blessing. For those that don't have both consoles, 360 owners with Arkham, and PS3 owners with GTA4, you don't get to enjoy the extra content if you want to. The choice is essentially taken from you, and I don't think that is fair TBH. I own both a 360 and a PS3, and I don't think its right. I know business isn't fair but when it comes down to what individual people get to enjoy that can't afford both consoles I think it sucks.

@Corak - GTA "exclusive" DLC is coming to the Ps3.

Just thought I'd let you know. Better late than never.

in fact I can't think of any 360 "exclusive" DLC that isn't timed. MW2's 30 day maps come to mind. Fucking stupid.

who would have thought that adding exclusive bonus content on one console instead of another would boost the sales of the game over the non-exclusive? I'm just waiting for this game to hit dirt cheap so I can buy Batman Arkham Asylum used for the 360.

I would love to have played the GTA IV DLC, but I made my bed out of unsold PS3's now I was going to have to lie in it.

Plus the fact that the DLC seemed like a cheap cash grab based solely on that it wasn't even any extention of Niko Belics story did kinda soften the blow. I guess now it doesn't matter since it's coming to PS3.

Hey Sexualchcolate. If the PS3 was as great as you claim it was you would not feel a nearly pathological need to run around proselytizing it. And it would have sold well at $599 dollars. And if the 360 was a lame as you claim it is well...the PS3 would have caught up in sales during its launch year because the gap would have been tiny. You are Nintendo's bitch anyway, whether you know it (or like it) or not, because they won. They won big. They have almost 50% of the market.

Oh. Dear. Me.

Microsoft actually made console gaming better, in my opinion. As a PC gamer, the last console I owned before the 360 was the PS1. From my mighty perch of the PC it was clear to me that consoles sucked ass big time. As a lover of online gaming, I think Microsoft improved console gaming immeasurably.

Of course, that's just my stupid opinion, kinda like you have yours.

More and more it's starting to seem like there are people at Sony who've not only located the ball, but are getting the hell on it.

Still, I can't help but hope for more exclusives. Those developers working on titles specifically for the PS3 tend to utilize the advantages of the system in ways that I appreciate.

I think adding stuff is fine (i.e, there was extra room on the BD disc so we put stuff in we couldn't fit on the 360), but if the ends up that publishers are restricting content (we didn't put this on the 360 because Sony paid us not to), then its bs.

Most PS3 fanboys look like idiots because the "boy" portion of the statement totally applies.

I've been in PlayStation Home and it's absolutely littered with 13/14 year olds hitting on one another. I've done my best to liven up Home by standing between the annoying and illiterate fucks while doing the Running Man to the cries of "go away, imma report u".

It really is no wonder we fanboys (by virtue of only owning PS3 being the platform I prefer) get a bad rap. Believe us coherence and age aside most don't
speak for the rest of us.

P.S. I have MAG too, unfortunately I'm with Raven. OH NOES.
