The age of third party exclusives is coming to an end, with fewer and fewer publishers remaining loyal to a single platform. Sony is well aware of this, and publisher relations VP Rob Dyer believes that exclusive content and advertising, like we saw with Batman: Arkham Asylum, is the new front of the console war.
"Exclusives just aren't as commonplace as they were during the PS2 days," says Dyer. "What is going to be the driving force is either exclusive ad campaigns, like the Madden campaign, or exclusive content like we had with Batman.
"The PS3 version outsold the 360 version, and what we've said to [developers] is 'If you take advantage of what the PS3 can deliver -- more content on the Blu-ray disc, better graphics, being able to get more of what the player wants onto the disc -- you're going to see those sales translate.' [EA Sports and Eidos] would both tell you that by focusing on PS3 and its virtues and what it provides, it translated into much bigger sales and bang for the buck.
"So what we've been doing is going to publishers and using that as our basic story, and going after exclusive content. You're going to see a lot of that, and for example, you're seeing it now with Dante's Inferno. EA had the collector's edition only on PS3. They filled up that Blu-ray disc and were able to do a lot more that they couldn't with 360. The consumer is starting to understand that -- there's a lot of cross-ownership between PS3 and 360, and so we're now trying to differentiate that and give that consumer a reason to buy the PS3 version instead of the 360 version."
It's been clear for a while that little exclusive ad deals and extra content is the way in which Microsoft and Sony are trying to entice consumers now, and Sony has certainly made some impressive gains. The Joker levels in Batman made the PS3 version a de-facto exclusive, while the Dante's Inferno collector's edition was a smart move. This is definitely the way the console wars are heading now, whether you like it or not.
PS3 Better Serves Publishers Than 360, says Sony [Industry Gamers]
360 = moar bucks for your bang, well not quite a bang, more a "poof" unless 360's bang when they RROD? I dunno.
Bring it fuckwits.
I wish they would buy Shenmue though.
Unrelated, and kinda UK related, but i sorted out tickets for me, the mrs and a buddy to go to the free Rage Against the Machine gig in London in June!
Any Toiders going?
But its good ti see sony fighting back, unless you provide incentives your average multiplat dev won't put blue rays extra space and the ps3s extra power to use, time for that to change, and I'm happy to see them taking steps twoards fixing that.
I never tire of your fanboyism.
And yeah, im probably going to that with some friends.
Fugazi is the only band that has never sold out
Regardless, it's not in the PUBLISHERS interest to maximize he potential of ANY console. It's in their interest to release every game on as many platforms as possible, with as little difference between those platforms as possible.
Developers aren't looking to make some customers happy and alienate others. They don't care about the console war. They just want to make money, and unless Sony or MS is padding their pockets, that means reaching as many customers as they can.
But I'm sure someone will say this is a GOOD thing now that Sony are going to do it.
@DToiders: Remember: Ignore the troll, don't feed it.
Remember when SONY was poo-pooing exclusive DLC on many a XBOX 360 game as Meaningless???
LOL
Now, PURE exclusive content is another matter, but TIMED exclusive is a complete cunt-move.
I'm speaking in pictures today.
I don't care either way. Timed, or console esclusive. If you super-duper care, you'll need both consoles, and lots of gamers got that route. If you just like to play games, you're more than catered for on either console.
Sure, TIMED exclusive DLC fucking pisses me off, there's no fucking need other than to mislead your customers, but out and out exclusive DLC is vaguely acceptable in this day and age.
LONGTIME!
Do a picture metaphor for me!
Just thought I'd let you know. Better late than never.
in fact I can't think of any 360 "exclusive" DLC that isn't timed. MW2's 30 day maps come to mind. Fucking stupid.
Plus the fact that the DLC seemed like a cheap cash grab based solely on that it wasn't even any extention of Niko Belics story did kinda soften the blow. I guess now it doesn't matter since it's coming to PS3.
Community Rules Quickie
Be edgy, be funny, but don't be a troll. Our rules for banning are pretty straightforward: spamming, trolling, racism, posting NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is slipping, please report abuse to our Community Manager.
I tend to wonder why its allowed, much less put up with.
But I guess I just have a lot less patience with douchebaggery. Who needs a welcoming community, right?
Oh. Dear. Me.
Microsoft actually made console gaming better, in my opinion. As a PC gamer, the last console I owned before the 360 was the PS1. From my mighty perch of the PC it was clear to me that consoles sucked ass big time. As a lover of online gaming, I think Microsoft improved console gaming immeasurably.
Of course, that's just my stupid opinion, kinda like you have yours.
See what happens when you are a Sony fanboy too long? A hole burns right through your fucking head and you completely stop making any coherent sense.
Why not be a PC/Wii/Xbox/Ps3 fanboy? It's fucking awesome over here. I get to play whatever pleases me.
You are all fags ^^
That was the best block of incoherent rambling I've read all day.
And all this time I thought the stuff I heard about PS3 fanboys being rabid, raving lunatics was just an exaggeration.
Still, I can't help but hope for more exclusives. Those developers working on titles specifically for the PS3 tend to utilize the advantages of the system in ways that I appreciate.
Oh, wait. That's only when 360 gets it and PS3 doesn't.
I've been in PlayStation Home and it's absolutely littered with 13/14 year olds hitting on one another. I've done my best to liven up Home by standing between the annoying and illiterate fucks while doing the Running Man to the cries of "go away, imma report u".
It really is no wonder we fanboys (by virtue of only owning PS3 being the platform I prefer) get a bad rap. Believe us coherence and age aside most don't
speak for the rest of us.
P.S. I have MAG too, unfortunately I'm with Raven. OH NOES.
