Sony: Europeans consider 'features' and not 'price' photo

Like a petulant child making up excuses to get out of taking a bath, it seems Sony will say anything to dodge the issue of a price cut. A particular favorite tactic of Sony's is to speak for the consumer, and that's exactly what SCEE president Andrew House has done, claiming that Europeans don't care about price.

"Not to harp on about it, but the PlayStation 3 has a ten-year life cycle and there are issues of cost and profitability," harps House. "We will make that move on price when all those factors are aligned. Would people buy more when they are cheaper? Of course. But on the other hand there is an inherent marketing challenge.

"In Europe I think people do see the value of the machine, the Blu-Ray and network services and take that all into consideration instead of just focusing on price. But we will look at price and will address it when the time is right."

I believe SCEE has drummed up this excuse before, and to some extent he is right. At least in the UK, the PS3 is a rather popular device, and many who can't afford one at least want one. Still, it's becoming very clear that the jaws of a price drop are closing around Sony's jugular, and they have to do something soon.

In a shocking twist... Sony are wrong.

PAL users are resigned to the fact we pay out of our arses for Gaming.
Simple as that.

The UK has it bad, but Australia has it much worse.

You've got to love that logic,

Also according to Sony, €250 is the same as $250. No psp go for me.

They probably thought that what was begrudgingly accepted for the PSP Go would also work for the PS3.
Then again they had to think of something different what with them not being the cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market and all.
Still, I do wonder about the "network services" the average consumer in my vicinity most likely has no idea what they're talking about there. Then again the people around me are generally clueless so it could just be that.

@Aurain TRUE!

I really would love to have a PS3 but not at this pricepoint. If there is no Pricecut in 2009 I'll get a XBox 360. It's just that easy!

At the moment I am wrestling with myself over whether or not to get a PS3. The more responsible side of me says to use the money for groceries and utilities. However, a price cut could be just the push I need to take the plunge.

On another note: I really wish they would stop throwing around that ten year life cycle stuff. The PS2 has lasted 10 years and is still hanging on for dear life with its fingertips. People are still playing Gamecube titles. The PS3 has the most impressive hardware and its hard to see how much better gaming can get from here, at least specs-wise. So I don't doubt the PS3 could last more than ten years. Quit pointing out the obvious and start doing something useful for your corporation.

I'm still pretty sure the cheapest PS3 is less expensive than what upgrading a 360 to do what a PS3 would cost you.

I got mine because of the features. It wasn't easy getting the cash together but it was oh so worth it. The best thing is after buying it you realise there's so much stuff it does that you didn't know before you got it!

It's never disapointed me, except one time where I plugged my mates MP3 player into it and it couldn't find one of his folders, I'm putting that down to him laying out his MP3 players folders retardedly.

Get a PS3, get PlayTV, and a HD TV and you've got yourself a super sweet all in one entertainment system there. All you've got to do is start that Blu-ray collection - they're awesome too.

Perhaps even get a 500gb HDD off ebay for £60 and drop that in there for all those Divx films you're downloading - naughty naughty - and putting on your PS3 via the super simple WiFi media server system.

I just cannot speak highly enough of my PS3.

European (well British) and fully appreciate the features. Well worth the money.

@ Cadtalfryn - a little something people seem to forget. Nail on the head.
@ ChaosTeaCup - i would do anything for a job in SCEE's marketing department!

I've got nothing to gain from saying it, but my PS3 was worth every single penny, and I got it at launch, around £400 - that's $800 at the exchange rate at the time! It puts a smile on my face every single day.

I mean a machine that lets me record my mrs's TV shows while I play games is awesome enough but the Ps3 is so much more. Vidzone is awesome too, that's a new thing - like having your own custom music channel! Free too!

Sony set themselves annual targets and hit them every year, why drop the price? It's not part of their plan to drop it yet, their plan is working so far. When they miss sales targets they'll drop the price. They're not trying to take over the world, just stick to their plan.

Sony's money troubles are down to one thing - exchange rate crash - thanks to greedy western bankers.

I see the value in a Ferrari but it's still too expensive for me to justify despite how bad I want one. I understand why they CAN'T really yet (considering the production cost of the thing) but I'm not getting one until the price drops. Or I get a large wad of extra cash.

The ONLY reason I'd buy a PS3 is the same reason a friend of mine has - if I really wanted a blu-ray player. My PC and 360 (and wii I GUESS) are more then enough and I can pick up the handful of decent exclusives later on.

Jeez... They really are horrible at PR aren't they.
Its these kind of comments that made me not want to go down the Sony route this generation.

The presumption that Europeans are willing to pay extra for the features is probably a subtle way of saying that Europe will get a very minor price cut, while US/Jap will get a much larger one.

I hate that Europeans are treated like scum by Sony. $400dollars shouldn't directly convert into 400 euro, or £400pounds!

Incidently, this 2006 quote from SCEE CEO David Reeves tipified Sony's attitude towards gamers and became the reason why I never purchased a PS3.

"We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even if it didn't have games,"

Yeah, Course. Mong!

Spoiler alert

The xbox actually costs more (if you take into account all the stuff that you need to buy with the cheapest model - bigger hard drive, wireless adapter, Live, etc)

Microsoft are being very clever, people only look at the prices at the store and that has worked to their advantage.

That said, console wars are stupid.

Sexual.

You're entitled to your opinion but nobody respects it because you're closed off from others opinions.

Much like you, I don't regret a Penny I've spent on my PS3. But I admit it's not perfect.
I'm more than happy to criticise Sony when they fuck me over (Often). And I praise them when they don't (Rarely).

I bought a PS3 cos it has the games I want.
I'd buy an Xbox if it had the games I wanted.

As for Horror Stories? My PS3's lens burnt out, even though I treat it with the utmost care. As with most PS systems, the Drives have always been a bit suspect.
The replacement service was amazing though.

You are a fanboy because you only see in Black and White, with Microsoft being inherently evil, and Sony being inherently good.

Both are flawed.

Sexual, your point about advertising for Sony couldn't be more ironic.
You actually do much more harm than good.
Read your posts back to yourself. I mean, really read them.
Not only do you come across as completely uninformed, but you also come across as an agressive fanboy who sees no good whatsoever in the xbox and see the ps3 as perfect.
This attitude will not tempt anyone into buying a ps3, infact, it will probably put them off because people like you own one.

Stop clamouring on the old RROD bandwagon.
All newly produced 360s have a jasper chipset, therefore eliminating the problem.

If you weighed everything up from both camps and came to an informed decision then people would respect your point a lot more, and may be tempted to actually buy a ps3.

The one thing people forget to do when they are stuck in a hole is to stop digging.

I am a Sony Fanboy, and I am completely happy with the system, but you are making us look bad. Sony is far from perfect. Their marketing stratedy was based on past assumptions and gaming trends (excluding the fact that consumers generally dont buy exspensive gaming systems cause they can't afford them) when they were clearly proven wrong with the transition into the "new" generation of consloes. Now, the "10 year system" strategy is slowly and painfully gaining momentum so stop your ranting and accept the fact that Sony f's up sometimes.

Personally I don't get it... I bought a launch PS3 for close to $700.00 (Canadian) and the local stores now carry PS3's for $399.00 - same price as an Xbox Elite.

if you want a ps3, just save and buy one. i paid $600 for mine and don't regret it (but i also have more disposable income too being a single guy)

if you can't afford it, maybe you should be spending your money else where on more essential things or stop whining and get a x360 or a wii.

sure, sony tries to spin the features for the price and i see their point but come on. just buy one or don't.

I would by the PS3 at 399,- Euros IF it would still play PS2-Games. I would love to play Ico and Shadow of the Colossus with my PS3. Nowadays thats not possible.

And I don't care much about Blu-ray Movies and and and - I just like to play some good games. And at the moment thats the only reason why I'm waiting for a Pricecut - to get the chance to play these games.

So for me it hurts the most that the PS3 is not able to play PS2 games. The price is never the problem - the value the product represents for the customer is. And at the moment I am not willing to pay 400€ for the PS3. Thats all.

Not surprised really.

I try to buy all console to play the best of what they offer. A PS3 I would love to own, but without that price drop, I'll be sticking to my 360 for a while.

Sony also forget, that these are harsh economic times, and everyone is tightening their belts. With people going out less, a 360 and Wii obviously attract more attention because they are CHEAPER entertainment. Couple in the huge price drops that 360 and Wii games see often, and it makes both of them more viable options than a PS3.

A 10 year plan is sweet in Sony's lofty head, but the reality on the ground is quite different. Devs and pubs are in trouble with games taking longer and more money to produce (thanks to Sony PS3 genius thinking), and once they are done, there's less of an audience to sell them too. This makes multi platform development a better option, to at least recover dev costs and break the mould.

Look at the PS3s best games. Valkyria Chronicles for example, If they were multi format, it would have surely sold more.

If Activision stop PS3 development, its going to be a big blow for Sony, and I don't think they understand the impact it may have. Guess they'll learn the hard way, what a shame.

Zantetsuken hit the nail on the head, gaming is expensive period, wether you need 4 controllers for you Wii, all that stuff to get a 360 to work at full efficiency, or a PS3 get ready to open your wallet.

As much as I want sony to lower the price so everyone can get one (and so I never have to see another post like this again) I also understand the PS3 is still in the early adopter phase because the economy slowed to a crawl. honestly Killzone 2 like quality should be something every dev should be able to achieve by now and sony should be far beyond it, but because of the way things turned out and everyone yelling multi plats are good they saw nobody was going to take advantage of what they had to offer and said screw it, sell to those who would buy and keep them happy. Until they see public backing of their tech a price cut probably won't happen.

Unfortunatly neither side deems willing to give so were at ends here until either enough people buy it at the current price or sony actually starts caring ( don't hold your breath on that last one).

Seriously, if it's too much fucking money then shut the fuck up an go play with your fucking Jordans. I hate the thought of people bitching about some an amazing offer for a decent $400. Maybe if some of these kids stop spending their budgets on useless junk they would cry less. Or, better yet, maybe if some of these douchebags actually got jobs, rather than abusing their father's credit card, they wouldn't have much problems affording it in the end.

You miss the point, Kalmah. There are other GAMES systems that are in many ways as good, in some aspects better, for CHEAPER[i/]. That is the end of it. simple. We, after all, are primarily interested in [i]GAMES systems. Most of us have PCs for the multi-media stuff. Sony misread the market. They got it wrong. It might come good for them. It might not. But there is a legitimate reason for why the PS3 is where it's at. The price-cut is seen by many as a solution to get the PS3 a bigger user-base. Personally, I don't believe Sony will make up that ground now. This generation is decided, but the machine is worthy of far more attention, so why not give themselves a better chance? No. Because Sony are arrogant fucks, who make over-priced, overrated electronics - in all divisions. Brand power is their weopan, and they totally overestimated theirs in this instance....
