Sony encourages you (yes, you) to steal its 'LittleBig billboards' photo

Sony is a company that’s become famous (infamous?) for its bizarre advertising campaigns (see: “This Is Living” and a poster that Sony rejected, dubbed “Thumbcock” by Colette), and while this latest idea doesn’t quite fall into the “weird” category, it’ll probably still raise a few eyebrows.

Obviously, Sony is counting on its charming puzzle platformer, LittleBigPlanet, to move more than a few PS3s this fall (and the game’s developer, Media Molecule, believes that it will). Accordingly, Sony has really been pushing the game -- declaring that its iconic (and crochet-able) lead character, the Sackboy, should become the mascot of the PlayStation brand.

In order to help raise the profile of the game among the masses, the game’s ad agency, Deutsch, has come up with an intriguing campaign. According to AdAge, Sony will create around 1,000 “LittleBig billboards,” small yard sign-size boards that will be put up in New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. These aren’t your average flyers, though -- they’re going to have “working lights and ladders and other high-end art and design.” Pretty nifty, eh?

To boot, Sony’s comfortable with the idea that a few of the signs will likely be stolen (their small stature makes them easy to run off with). In fact, a spokeswoman went as far as to wish for the thefts, so LittleBigPlanet fans can spread the word (and maybe even make some money by putting the ads up on eBay). So if you’re in either of the three metropolises mentioned above, keep your eyes peeled for some pilfering!

Why not Boston? I figured Boston would totally be a keen city to advertise something with small boards full of lights and do hickeys to...oh wait no they'll just think it's a bomb.

Boston sucks.

I'm in new york and I'll likely get a party together and raid the city trying to grab all 1000 posters (ala assassins creed flags) to get the Little big planet collectors trophy achievement.

Oh Sony. They try so hard. I really am looking forward to this game but I'm doubtful I'll ever get a ps3.

Strange to me that Sony would even entertain the idea of wanting people to steal these.

Hey I live in San Francisco. The PSP ads that were put up all over the place to look like graffiti really pissed people off. I couldn't care less for this game, however the plunder sounds fun enough.

Slightly OT, but I jhave a Allen/Hexagon keys that fit most bus stop bill board sign holders.

If something like a new harry potter film or any other advert which becomes worth stealing is shown than I will quite happily will steal it to sell on ebay and make some easy cash.

I got into this as I used to work at several cinemas and quickly realised the profit to be made selling advertising merchandise which was often easily discarded after its purpose was served for me to dig out and pass on.

I can't wait for the story that a kid falls to his death trying to get one of these, and Sony gets sued by the fam.

Also, blog link FTW!

Haha! I'm still not sure if I'd call those ugly little critters *cute* but they do have a certain uniqueness to them that makes them look adorable. Weird...

I'm also a Mexican in LA, but rather than being the theiving kind, I'm of the lazy kind. Too much effort. Too high. Scared of heights.
Pass.
