Sony downplays GTA IV's extras, but nobody's buying it photo

There once was a time when exclusives played a big part in console sales, and while times have indeed changed, having the right games on your hardware can still make a difference. It's public knowledge that Sony may have dragged their feet when it came time to wheeling and dealing with Rockstar, and they paid a pretty big price for that mistake -- Grand Theft Auto IV is now multiplatform. But the past is the past, and it can no longer be undone. That doesn't mean, however, that you can't downplay what the competition has to offer. According to SCEA's VP of Product Marketing, Scott Steinberg, the episodic content offered to Xbox 360 owners is nothing to get worked up about:

"[Microsoft] spent the GNP of several small Latin American countries to get that [content], and if you've ever played San Andreas...there's a lot of game to Grand Theft Auto and there's going to be a lot of game to Grand Theft Auto IV to the point where I think most people will have that Grand Theft Auto experience on the PS3, day and date, same core game shipping on the 360. Perhaps they'll be shipping some episodic content in the fall, but there is a whole lot of product shipping on the PS3 in April and I personally don't think there's going to be a huge percentage of folks who jump into downloadable content for another price when they're still playing through the core product."

More on this, after the jump:

Scott then goes on to remind us about Sony's own bag of exclusives, and what it possibly means not only to those who have a PS3, but also to those who are still hesitant about taking the Sony plunge:

"I think PlayStation fans know the Grand Theft Auto experience on the PS2 is how they grew up playing Grand Theft Auto," he continued, "and when you combine GTA IV with MGS 4 and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, all the exclusive content that we've got going forward, I think that goes from tipping point to shoving point for consumers who are on the fence, wondering what platform should I buy. I think the clear exclusive message that we have is that the PS3 is where, not only do you get Grand Theft Auto, but you'll get MGS, you'll get Gran Turismo and these are also brands that have moved hardware units. It's the elite of the elite products that actually enable hardware to be sold with software and we'll have three of them."

Personally, I'm thinking that most people will be too busy fooling around with the main game to worry too much about the extras Microsoft is offering, but it's still a nice touch that shouldn't be underestimated, and I have little doubt that it will make a difference in sales. Everything else being equal, there's going to be a cross section of consumers with both consoles who are going to view the Xbox 360 version as being "more complete." On the other hand, it's equally understandable why Sony would want to downplay this (remember what GTA did for PS2 sales?), and paint the broader picture that the PS3 has the blockbuster games that matter. Unfortunately, nobody's buying it.

While the PS3's hardware is arguably equal (if not better, depending on who you talk to) to the Xbox 360's, Microsoft has had no trouble matching and surpassing (once again, depends on who you ask) Sony's game library in the current gen. So while I plan on picking up the PS3 version as a matter of personal preference, I'm betting that the 360 is going to do more than hold its own in terms of total sales of the game. As Microsoft predicted, it could very well own it. Even if a part of their userbase will have their consoles in transit to and from the repair center when the game launches, the fact remains that everybody and their brother still owns one, while the PS3 has only recently started getting noticed by the general population.

I'll be buying this for the 360 for two reasons. First, I simply prefer the 360 controller, mainly because of the trigger placement and feel. Also, the SIXAXIS/Dual Shock 3 just feels too small in my hands.

My second reason is completely independent of the game itself. Most of my friends own a 360 and only a 360. Causing mayhem with them in Liberty City should prove to be fun as hell, and I can't wait for that.

The episodic content might prove to be a nice bonus down the road, but I'd have to see how extensive these episodes are. I know this comparison is going to be like apples and oranges, but if the GTA IV episodes are as rich in content and character as the Half-Life 2 episodes, I'm sold.

Both the game and the DLC will be the shit and sell millions. Thread over.

Also, that picture is gold.

Am I the only one who remembers Rockstar saying there would be seperate DLC for the 360 AND the PS3? It seems to me that Microsoft's marketing strategy consists of taking shit that every system has and shouting so loudly about it that everybody, even the sucker-chumps at Sony forget these facts.

I'll get it for the PS3. DLC doesnt really interest me all that much and I see no reason to get it. If the game offers already what it says it does then I'm good. With all the other games coming out this year that I have to buy theres no place for dlc for me.

I'm getting it on the PS3. I refuse to pay for a couple of extra episodes that either should have been included in the retail game, or are just tacked on. I honestly can't believe that people would buy GTA on the 360 just because they claim it has exclusive content.

Knowing Microsoft, that content will just be un-exclusifed in a couple of months anyway.

I don't see how people ar somehow intimidated by trying GTAIV on an Xbox 360 controller. You realize they're essentially the same thing? If you like the Dualshock's joystick placement whatever, but it's hardly something any gamer can't get used to after 10 seconds. If there's extensive use of the trigger buttons, like in driving as well as shooting, then there's hardly a net advantage to either controller even if you do prefer the Dualshock.

As far as I’m aware, there will be DLC for both the 360 and PS3 versions. However, what Microsoft paid Rockstar (reportedly $50 million) for will forever be 360-exclusive. Apparently, it’s a bunch of new missions and maybe even a new gameplay area or something. But I don’t own a 360, so I’ll be getting it for the PS3. As for the exclusive DLC...meh. As others have said, I’m sure I could spend 100 hours in the main game regardless.

Seeing as, for me, Gran Turismo died with the PS1, and so did the MGS series, I'd like to know games it is Sony mean...

for $50 million, I wouldn't bet against that exclusive 360 content being more on par with Shivering Isles than your average small addition like Horse Armour.

what I don't get is why Sony aren't saying anything about their own DLC for GTA IV sure it isn't exclusive (probably) and it may not be to the same level as the 360 DLC but it's still there and Sony are giving the impression that there is no DLC for the PS3 version at all.

@Robbo_the_hood:
Sure anyone can get used to another controller but that doesn't mean they'll like them all the same and it's not about having an advantage by using one controller over another. It's all about preference and what you feel comfortable with.

The 2 controllers are different though, for starters the analog sticks are completely different in terms of feel, sensitivity and position. Even the buttons are different even though they share the same layout, although they are subtle differences (360 buttons are rounded and have slightly more spring back, PS3 triggers are more spongy and 360 shoulder buttons are more clicky)

While Sony is trying to downplay Microsoft's exclusive content, aren't they insulting Rockstar at the same time?

I mean, I know they're trying to say both games are even to take away Microsoft's thunder, but consequently they're saying whatever Rockstar is working on is insignificant and pointless. Like, you don't have to play that extra stuff because Rockstar probably won't be making anything worthwhile.

I'll be buying this in the PC port that the recent addition of all Rockstar's PC games on to Steam makes me think will happen.

I never was good at GTA aiming with a control stick anyways. Never got past the one sniping mission in GTA3 until I dropped the PS2 version and got it on PC.

GTA4 has a very robust multiplayer offering, therefore you should get it for whatever console your friends are playing on. For that reason, I'm getting the 360 version. Not only that, if I want more, there is always the DLC the 360 offers. Also, I think the 360 controller is the most comfortable controller I've ever held, which is nice if there really is 100+ hours of gameplay.

I don't really see what GTA's history has to do with what console you buy it for. People didn't have problems switching to the PS to play Final Fantasy games. People didn't have problems switching to the Gamecube to play Resident Evil 4. People won't have problems switching to the 360 to play GTA. If you DO have problems playing a GTA game on something other than a Sony console then you are a fanboy and I don't care what you think.

@Darkknight37

i read an article which said that microsoft would get 70% of dl content sales, so if the dlc is 10$ this means that microsoft would have to sell close to 10 million dlc...that said the deal isn't about making money on the dlc, it's more about making money on the game itself and the loss of sales that ps3 will incur.

Samit, yes the PS3 is getting exclusive content, but it's not the extra missions and extra story that the 360 is getting. It will probably be extra downloadable cars or character outfits or something like that.

I seem to be the only person who's excited for GTAIV multiplayer... to me DLC won't matter in the face of being able to run around the sandbox environment with my good friends. My best friend and I used to spend our college days playing San Andreas two player mode, even though it was ABOMINABLE.

pre-ordered for the ps3 because thats what i fell most comfortable playing it on, now i need to get a ps3 before it comes out. also free multiplayer is key! and i will be having to much fun testing the psychics to bother with downloadable content. nor do i want to pay 30$ for it. plus my 360 is about to die and i know the time spent playing this game would kill it after a day.

Netrat33 is right too, people WILL go for the DLC, horse armour or no, as long as the core game is good. As for BlackDoves assertion that this content will arrive on the ps3 a few months later.... ummm.... Nup. Sorry. Not gonna happen. Microsoft ponied up the dough, so microsoft get the content.

I'm against the "single player games with extra* DLC" that is totally unjustified. If the game is incomplete, then fucking put multiple discs and make fucking sure I get my full worth of 60$, not with unfinished bullshit then making me pay $10-20 more so I can finish the story.

A hardcore GTA fan is going to get the Xbox 360 version -- they'll want as much content as they can get.

People with both the 360 and PS3 will probably go for the 360 version based on achievements and the DLC. Honestly, I don't see the point in willingly locking the DLC off from yourself if the option is there.

The majority of consumers, however, won't even KNOW that the DLC is there, so will just buy for whatever console they fancy. In Europe, I expect the PS3 version to do very well.

MOAR. I like that fake-word.

If i had a ps3, I'd be getting it on that, simply because i've always felt more comfortable using a dualshock (sixaxis?) controller to get my GTA on. But as I only have a 360 i guess that's the only option for me. But no matter how much Sony downplays this, once people get wind of DLC, they'll all be like "OMG DO WANT DLC". no chance Sony.

How the game flows will make my personal decision. While I too prefer to control it through the PS style controller, I have played Saint's Row on the 360 and that wasn't bad. I think the controller won't make much of a difference to me. At least not as much as the quality of the game is. If it runs better on either system, that's the one i'll be waiting for.

However, while the 360 will have the likely cheap additional content. Chances are likely that the PS3 will once again go the route of "You completed X task, you have unlocked Y bonus content. Concept Artwork".. To me, that will level out. But that is just what I figure, as that seems to be becoming the norm for PS3 games.

My personal prediction: They likely won't be much different from each other at all, causing me to buy it for the PS3. But better to be safe than sorry.
