There once was a time when exclusives played a big part in console sales, and while times have indeed changed, having the right games on your hardware can still make a difference. It's public knowledge that Sony may have dragged their feet when it came time to wheeling and dealing with Rockstar, and they paid a pretty big price for that mistake -- Grand Theft Auto IV is now multiplatform. But the past is the past, and it can no longer be undone. That doesn't mean, however, that you can't downplay what the competition has to offer. According to SCEA's VP of Product Marketing, Scott Steinberg, the episodic content offered to Xbox 360 owners is nothing to get worked up about:
"[Microsoft] spent the GNP of several small Latin American countries to get that [content], and if you've ever played San Andreas...there's a lot of game to Grand Theft Auto and there's going to be a lot of game to Grand Theft Auto IV to the point where I think most people will have that Grand Theft Auto experience on the PS3, day and date, same core game shipping on the 360. Perhaps they'll be shipping some episodic content in the fall, but there is a whole lot of product shipping on the PS3 in April and I personally don't think there's going to be a huge percentage of folks who jump into downloadable content for another price when they're still playing through the core product."
More on this, after the jump:
Scott then goes on to remind us about Sony's own bag of exclusives, and what it possibly means not only to those who have a PS3, but also to those who are still hesitant about taking the Sony plunge:
"I think PlayStation fans know the Grand Theft Auto experience on the PS2 is how they grew up playing Grand Theft Auto," he continued, "and when you combine GTA IV with MGS 4 and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, all the exclusive content that we've got going forward, I think that goes from tipping point to shoving point for consumers who are on the fence, wondering what platform should I buy. I think the clear exclusive message that we have is that the PS3 is where, not only do you get Grand Theft Auto, but you'll get MGS, you'll get Gran Turismo and these are also brands that have moved hardware units. It's the elite of the elite products that actually enable hardware to be sold with software and we'll have three of them."
Personally, I'm thinking that most people will be too busy fooling around with the main game to worry too much about the extras Microsoft is offering, but it's still a nice touch that shouldn't be underestimated, and I have little doubt that it will make a difference in sales. Everything else being equal, there's going to be a cross section of consumers with both consoles who are going to view the Xbox 360 version as being "more complete." On the other hand, it's equally understandable why Sony would want to downplay this (remember what GTA did for PS2 sales?), and paint the broader picture that the PS3 has the blockbuster games that matter. Unfortunately, nobody's buying it.
While the PS3's hardware is arguably equal (if not better, depending on who you talk to) to the Xbox 360's, Microsoft has had no trouble matching and surpassing (once again, depends on who you ask) Sony's game library in the current gen. So while I plan on picking up the PS3 version as a matter of personal preference, I'm betting that the 360 is going to do more than hold its own in terms of total sales of the game. As Microsoft predicted, it could very well own it. Even if a part of their userbase will have their consoles in transit to and from the repair center when the game launches, the fact remains that everybody and their brother still owns one, while the PS3 has only recently started getting noticed by the general population.

The only way I can see multiplayer DLC working, is if they choose to make it free after a few months, like Bungie and the recently made free 'Heroic Map Pack'.
"Sony may have drug their feet"
Drug their feet? are you serious? It's dragged their feet that I think you're trying to say.
PS - times have not changed, exclusives still play a big role in the industry.
Among the small population of people who own both 360 and PS3, I can people who value online going for the 360 version and people with reliability concerns or big GTA fans favoring PS3.
Everyone else (like me) is just going to buy it for the console they already have.
That said, I'd still want the option of getting the DLC if it turns out to be really cool so I'm definitely getting the X360 version.
If you don't have a PS3 will you buy one to play this game? No
Even though you don't like micro transactions, do you want to have the option of buying additional content? Yes
Will it probably come out eventually on the PS3? Of course
More importantly, will it have similar problems to Bully and just brick up on both systems? Lets hope not!
Good catch. *fixed*
Episodic content is insanely cool when it's done right. I'll very likely get the first DLC the day it drops just of out of curiosity (as well as the option of purchasing future content as well).
I'm really looking forward to it being released. I believe if the developers can do a really good job with the game, they'll do the same with the DLC.
Too much of a good game? That's a complaint I wouldn't mind having.
360 still has double (more??) the install base that the PS3 does so right away they are going to get more people buying it for the 360.
The PS3 might get a high % of PS3 owners to buy the game than the 360 but thats because PS3 owners don't have as many AAA titles to spend money on as the 360 owners do.
360 owners can be choosey. PS3 owners take what they can get.
If Sony had the content and MS didn't, we'd all be prison sexed with advertisements from Sony for the next month till launch. Their attempt at downplaying is cute, but don't think for a second they wouldn't be winking at us with a kneeling pad by their feet. A game company saying "oh, you'll be fine with just the game itself" that's finally getting rumble support for their games is kinda laughable. That GNP statement was clearly an attempt to belittle MS's decision to back up the truck to Rockstar for the DLC. I only hope is that some of that loot goes towards making the DLC as badass as possible.
As a GTA Whore, I NEEDED more when I completed the PS2 games, and spent my time doing random shit. I openly welcome any attempt to expand the experience, even if a price has to be paid. It's like paying for those PSP games, IMO.
If thats true than HAHAHA @ MS
although the damage would have been done as far as sales go
Oh hey Xbox 360.
However, if you own only a PS3 or 360 does it really effect you that much? If you only had a PS3, like me, would that alone make you run out and get a 360 to get that DLC? Unless you are a monster GTA fan I say most likely not, I know I'm not. I think we all know that Microsoft is trying to sway those that haven't gotten a system yet to chose the 360 over the PS3 if you were waiting to get one until this game came out. If you own both systems its really up to you which one you wanted to get it for. Its your personal choice when it comes down to it since there is no price difference in the game's cost, just the added cost of the DLC.
As a PS3 owner, I'm not that upset about not getting exclusive DLC. Would it be nice? Yea sure, not so much if the price was high for not much added content. But if the DLC added a lot of extra content, extended the storyline and the like I would be a littly salty. Either way I'm sure if you have been waiting for this like I have you'll be having a blast come the end of April.
...while it's interesting that Sony downplays the exclusive Xbox 360-content (which will NEVER be released on PS3 - according to Micrsoft, mind you) because it shows that Sony is afraid/nervous about it - I think it won't make that big a difference.
Personally I've pre-ordered the Xbox 360 version because I want to play it with the best controller (and rumble) and take a look the the exclusive DLC... not necessarily because I want to buy it, just to have the option is important.
It appears that it was $50 million.
Usually, I would just a play a game to finish, now I play a game to uncover all the little secrets, become a better player, and finish the game with as many achievements as possible. I'm not crazy for them, I do know when to stop trying to get 1,000,000 points on Geometry Wars Evolved, but they definitely expand my time and enjoyment playing a game.
As for the DLC, I only get DLC if it's free. If I did own a PS3, DLC would have little sway in my decision. For me, achievements are a bigger pull.
That being said I know a lot of gamers who are leaning towards the 360 version for the DLC and I don't blame them.
For me I'm not really convinced by the exclusive DLC because as others have said there's plenty to do in the main game already and if the content was really that good then it'll be in the main game and not as DLC. I'll probably be picking up the PS3 version because I prefer the controller for these types of games.
Also I think people forget that the PS3 will be getting DLC as well just not the "exclusive episodic content" which sounds like extra single player story bits. The PS3 will probably still get all the multiplayer DLC and who knows maybe some extra missions as well
Yet I still don't think the DLC will make much of a difference or be all that great. I'll probably buy it though.
And for that matter, how did Microsoft manage to get exclusive DLC? Why would Rockstar just screw Sony over like that?
I actually think that the only people the DLC is going to matter to are the people who already own both consoles. I don't think it'll make a difference to people who don't own either yet. Who's going to decide which console to buy based on DLC for one game? I think Soul Calibur 4's exclusive Star Wars characters are more likely to influence console decisions then GTA4's DLC.
The exclusive content is "episodic" content, not horse armor. It seems like it might be extra missions with new characters, etc. Microsoft paid quite a bit to secure the rights to the game and the extra DLC. Hoygeit quoted a figure of $50 million.
I've got both systems, but I don't see why I'd pick it up on the PS3.
Also the Ps3 ver. needs moar HotCoffee. ;]
The PS3... All my PS3 games are exclusives (I couldn't play them on any other machine), and I only own one 'cause I wanted to own all three current-gen machines.
Sigh... HOME better come one soon. I wanna spend my time on the Sony interwebs.
Will I be able to kill people on the PS3!
Is rockstar going to provide dedicated servers or is this going to be another lag-infested player hosted shitfest - exclusive to your console only?
The same deal on the PS3 is £350, admittedly with HD etc but Joe average on the street wants GTA goodness for as cheap as possible. Throw in the fact that 360 will get extra content and the gap gets bigger. Reading the edge article about the downloadable content and it seems sizable and well integrated into the experience. This game is gonna be HUGE.
My second reason is completely independent of the game itself. Most of my friends own a 360 and only a 360. Causing mayhem with them in Liberty City should prove to be fun as hell, and I can't wait for that.
The episodic content might prove to be a nice bonus down the road, but I'd have to see how extensive these episodes are. I know this comparison is going to be like apples and oranges, but if the GTA IV episodes are as rich in content and character as the Half-Life 2 episodes, I'm sold.
*If I am wrong, I will eat my hat*
Also, that picture is gold.
