Sony doesn't care that PSP-3000 is way cheaper than PSPgo photo

Sony recently announced a Japanese price drop for the PSP-3000 in what seems to be a dedicated effort to undermine its own PSPgo system. Some would say that making a previous PSP model even more appealing than the already-hard-to-justify PSPgo was a stupid move, but Sony doesn't care. After all, what's one more idiotic decision?

"That's fine. We have no intention to stop producing the PSP-3000," said Sony's Shuhei Yoshida when asked about the price gap between the two models. "New games will be released in both UMD and digital formats. However, some small games aren't getting a UMD release ... We will continue supporting the UMD format."

Seriously ... what is the point of the PSPgo? I can't quite work out why it exists anymore.

The go isn't even that expensive...

The DSI is 300 dollars where I live, the go will probably 450 dollars....

seems the PSPGo is more of testing of the waters than anything. like previous comments on prior PSPGo articles have said.

is it crazy high priced?? yes.

will people still buy it?? sadly, yes.

the sad thing is that the original psp was more expensive than the ps2 and if you factor in inflation, the PSPGO and the PSP-1000 are on par for pricing at its release.

Its slick, small and I want one, but I won't get one because I'm not getting rid of my library. I'd like to be able to purchase this, i truly would, but with no UMD legacy program, I'm not getting one. Maybe if this bombs hard enough, and enough of us bitch, they'll realize their mistake.

So really, the ball is in Sony's court.

None of the PSP's iterations have ever interested me. But still, you have to wonder what the hell Sony is thinking. They are determined to shoot themselves in the foot (with a big-ass gun) every chance they get.

The pspgo seems like a cool device to have, if it was cheaper. I ain't getting it, leaning toawards the psp 3000 now

maybe the pricing is so high because they know hackers will tear the digital PSPgo a new one and at this point I hope they do - I am not one to support pirating; but Sony is just so redonculous

I think it's pretty clear why the two exist concurrently - they are aimed at two different markets. the trad PSP is for the mass market - the majority of consumers who are not yet comfortable with not owning games in a physical format. the PSPgo satisfies those who are entirely comfortable with downloading their games and other online functions. so sony covers two key markets at the same time with a highly similar product. it probably won't work but their flawed logic is quite clear.

what they really ought to do is sell copy protected mem sticks with games- it would make life a lot easier since they are easy to carry around and you would have a physical copy of the game- also it gives retailers a used option and would be way cheaper to produce than umd's.
I hate to say it but at this point the iphone/ipod touch has a leg up on both nintendo and sony in the media-less purchasing realm- it is going to take a lot more innovation on one of the game companies to compete

I really want to get a PSP, but the existence of the PSPgo confuses me, if they are just going to attempt to phase out UMD PSP's, then what's the point of getting one?

But this thing is so damn expensive I don't want to get it. And is there any way to play older PSP games on it? There isn't going to be any conversion device anymore, and I don't think they'll put their entire PSP library available for download for the PSPgo. But will there be exclusive content for the PSPgo? Will some games be released as download only?

At this point it seems like if I were to get either one, in some way shape or form, I'll miss out on something. I guess I'll wait another year to see what happens....

It's like Chevrolet selling a sports car with passenger side airbags for almost 9 years, and then on the 10th year they announce a more expensive car without passenger side airbags.

"Well studies show that most people when they drive, drive by themselves so the passenger side air bag seemed superfluous. Now look at how much more space the glove compartment has! You can keep a small dog in there. And it only takes super-unleaded! Have I mentioned our dealership is on the side of a cliff in the middle of the desert so you'll have to drive all the way out here to get it serviced? That's just to make sure we're the only ones who touch your car, you don't want some anonymous mechanic selling you parts out of his dingy garage do you? Who knows where those parts have been?"

I think sony has just moved all the idiots to the PSPgo division since they're actually on a roll with the PS3 lately.

But the real reason for the PSPgo is people with small pockets, it's more portable, that's it. I could actually understand it if it was a clamshell or had a glass screen that wasn't super easy to scratch but as is I just don't get it.

While it is hard to fathom, that's just the byproduct of everyone evaluating what *THEY* want. Not what others want.

I'm not saying the Go is going to have a strong launch and become the greatest hand held ever, but there are people who are going to buy it.

Think about it. It has 16gb of internal flash memory, and you can insert another 16gb memory card. 32gb of storage within the unit, 16gb of which is removable.

Now, at 900mb per layer of disc, you could pack around 32 titles with room to spare for more. Or use that space for apps, because Sony is wanting to expand the scope of the PSP to feel more like an iPhone, with an app store and all.

So it can't make phone calls, but it will spiritually feel like an iPhone built into a piece of hardware designed for gaming.

Take into account the amount of people who hack consoles and... Well, having a hacked Go becomes very convenient. Being able to cart around dozens of retail games along with apps all on a machine that is built for gaming... Well, some people are going to dig the Go.

They'll probably pirate the games they carry, but that's inevitable on any console, hand held or not.

Just because it doesn't make sense for a lot of people doesn't mean it isn't going to have sales regardless. If Sony wants to spend money on a business model that doesn't feel very appealing to some people, then let them. It's not your money and you are not being pushed or required to buy it. As Sony projects, they don't really care. So why should we?

Speak with your wallet. Not your internet troll voice.

it does make sense Jim, the entry price for a pspGO is way too much, the other one is cheaper.
In time they will probably stick with a pspGO model of no-umd and THAT business model, but in the meantime they cant just ignore the fact that 300usd is too much for a lot of people to pay for a handheld, they would rather spend the money on a ps3. And I think that is the way they are thinking with the pspGO beign some sort of experiment right now on downloadable content.

It won't feel like an iPhone. No interface Sony has had I it's wildest dreams matches an Apple interface. Without a touchsreen and accelorometer, it's restricted to traditional controlschemes. Nevermind the fact that it won't see the software support of the iPhone, and the PSP just recently broke 40m units installed globally, while the iPhone hit that mark in just over two years. The iPhone needs a controller add-on. The PSP needs buried.

The PSP-3000 plus a 16GB memorystick pro duo (from amazon) comes to about $238. the PSP Go, with 16GB of memory is about $250. Why exactly is everyone so up in arms about this?

price drop on the old model usually means that they are selling it off... then they'll cease production and drop the price on the PSP Go. Isn't that the normal way they do business?? Early adopters get screwed on price and the "new and improved" model is usually a stripped down, missing whole bunch of functions, model.

You must have missed the first sentence in the article that was referring to the fact that the PSP-3000 is getting a price cut.

Not to mention the fact that to a lot of people the PSPgo is not as appealing as a PSP-3000.

Oh, come on. Yes, Sony is making it pretty damn clear, that GO is not for people that already has PSP. It sucks, but it's not stupid. It just shows that Sony don't want to really screw up their relations with game shops... yet.
So, for now they want people, that already has PSP, to continue buing UMDs. And GO is for all the other people.

At least Sony realizes that many people will prefer the PSP-3000. It's good that they're keeping the option around to purchase the older model. I think it's fair to say that Nintendo would never keep selling an older model that customers may prefer. So, stop giving Sony such a bad time. Giving the customer the option of purchasing either model is a good thing and, hopefully, they continue producing both models for the foreseeable future.

They always do that though. Before I could get a GBA or a DS, a DS or DS Lite and right now I can go get another DS Lite or DSi because that's what all companies do. Sony doesn't really deserve credit for not fucking up. That's like giving me a reward for not stabbing someone today.

seriously, the psp go is for newcomers not for people upgrading. Why is it so expensive? the 16 gigs. Buy a PSP-3000 with a 16 gig memory stick and you're looking at the psp-go price.

Since i own a PSP-3000 already, the PSP-go doesn't interest me. If I didn't own a psp, I'd get the PSP-go since the largest memory stick in the market is 16 gb and since you can add more memory to the psp-go, I'd be able to carry all my music and PSN games in it.
