Many of us thought that Microsoft had pulled off a huge coup when Yoichi Wada revealed that Final Fantasy XIII was coming to the Xbox 360 in North America and Europe. We were wrong however, as the snuggable SCEE boss and all round talkative chap David Reeves is here to set the record straight:

I think that just as we got a massive blip up [in hardware sales] with GTA IV -- which was not exclusive -- we’ll get exactly the same blip up with Final Fantasy... I know it [FFXIII] will look great on PS3 and -- it’s up to Microsoft to clarify this -- it’s still exclusive in Japan.

So there, it's still exclusive in Japan. This means Microsoft has won NOTHING!

Not much of a comeback really, but it's all Sony can do to save face since losing exclusivity on its biggest upcoming draw. I don't think many Final Fantasy fans currently PS3-less will shell out for a black box o' Blu-ray just on the promise that the game "looks great." Like it or not, that "massive blip up" may only be a fraction of the blip it could have bliptentionally blipped had Sony maintained exclusivity on XIII, at least in terms of software sales.

For all its bravado concerning its attitude toward exclusives, one can assume Sony is thanking the ghost of Ken Kutaragi for LittleBigPlanet.

Bah, Despite what Sony and MS say, Exclusives move consoles. You may not like it, (I don't) but thems the facts. You think that Sony would have sold more PS3's if MGS4 was on 360 as well?

Sony's trying to put on a brave face, but the fact remains they lost one of their biggest draws. Time will tell how it will effect them....

i was thinking about the 'exclusive in Japan' thing, im sure the hardcore japanese 360 will import the USA or European versions.

I love my PS3, I really do. I'm trying to love Sony too. But shit like this makes me want to dropkick my PS3 out of spite.

Sony must hold a board meeting every Monday to decide which executive is going to put their foot in their mouth this week.

the upcoming sony titles all look really good though, little big planet, resistance 2 , the agency, warhawk2, god of war 3- I am missing a couple, but they all do look really nice (except for god of war that we haven't seen any clips from)

PL is right, the ps3 has more games you can't find anywhere else (that are worth a damn at least), and it's been out a year less than the 360. A lot of people like to pretend the PC is not a video game device. But I play my PC more than my ps3, 360, ds, psp, ps2, wii, whatever. Lets look at metacritics top 20 360 games.

1 Grand Theft Auto IV PC PS3
2 BioShock PC PS3 (in a month but still pc)
3 Orange Box, The PC PS3
4 Gears of War PC
5 Oblivion PC PS3
6 Call of Duty 4: PC PS3
7 Halo 3 EXCLUSIVE (note: coming to pc)
8 Braid EXCLUSIVE (note: coming to pc)
9 Guitar Hero II PS3, PS2,
10 Rock Band PS3, Wii, PS2
11 Mass Effect PC
12 Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon PC, PS3
13 Geometry Wars 2 EXCLUSIVE
14 Forza Motorsport 2 EXCLUSIVE
15 Call of Duty 2 PC, PS2
16 Rez HD EXCLUSIVE (unless you count the original version on ps2)
17 Castlevania:Symphony of the Night PS1, PS3, PSP
18 Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas PS3, PC
19 Burnout Revenge PC, PS3
20 Virtua Fighter 5 PS3

Come on, look, I see 5/20 of the top rated 360 games are actually exclusive to the 360 (as in you have to EXCLUSIVELY buy a 360 to play it). Out of those 5, 3 are down loadable content. PS3 has Ratchet, Uncharted, Resistance, Killzone, Warhawk, Gran Turismo, Disgea 3....other i'm sure that are worth mentioning. I can't play any of those on my PC. Flamebate....go!

I bought a PS3 the day FFXIII 360 was announced and felt a bit burned. LBP better blow my mind since its the only game I see myself buying for the PS3 for the remainder of the year.

Really Resistance 2, Socom, Motorstorm, Rockband 2, Bioshock? Last two are not exclusives, but if you don't have another console then I think you've got a few things to look forward to. I guess not everyone likes shooters or racing games though. Disgea 3 comes out today though if you're looking for something.

All I care about is that I am going to play FF XIII & I won't need a PS3 to play it! - though, of cause the same can't be said for LBP. So I have no right bashing Sony.

Leave it to Sony to try and crap on the news that FF is going multi-plat. It's unbelievably juvenile.

Then you get Kojima saying he wishes people would stop asking about MGS4 on 360.

"But, you know, what kind of disturbs me sometimes, because a lot of people ask me about this PS3/360 question, is that it's not about the hardware - I want people to look at the game itself."

If it's all about the game, then put it in more people's hands by taking it multi-plat. Otherwise, just admit you <3 Sony and be done with it.

Wow you actually are going to say that gears of war being ported to the pc hurt the 360's exclusivity? It didn't come out until a year later, and anyone who was going to buy a 360 to play that game already had. Same goes with bioshock, mass effect, oblivion (btw most people still do not have pc's fast enough to run those anyway.) I really don't see you'r point here, especially since microsoft wins either way because they are "games for windows", and if the ps3 is the place to find games that are "worth a damn" than why do you play the pc more?

I think 360 and PS3 both have 6 console exclusive games on their top 20, not counting Rez HD. Besides this exclusivity tie, the 360 has more 90% and above rated games, and their top 20 bottoms out over 88%, while the 20th best PS3 game has over 85%.

Anyone who would have bought a PS3 for Final Fantasy XIII already owns it. It really doesn't make a big difference in the long run.

@wickdwagger. What else do you want me to say? They are NOT exclusives, Oblivion launched with PC, Mass Effect was only a few months later, and yes Gears was a year. As it stands RIGHT NOW, I don't need a 360 to play the majority of it's "exclusive" titles, which they obviously are not. My point is that for PC gamers (me), having a PC is as good as having a 360. Buying one (for me) would be silly because most 360 games are on PC. The ones that are not, eventually do port to the PC. Most of these games are better on PC(orange box, call of duty 4, oblivion) because of the keyboard/mouse combo. I guess that's an opinion/preference per the individual but that's the general consensus at least.

As far as PS3 games go, if I want to play something like MGS4, Uncharted, Ratchet, etc, I HAVE to play it on a PS3 and nothing else. So when I open my wallet I say, "I already have a gaming PC, any game that comes out to 360 that does well is either going to be on PS3 or PC, and anything that I want to play on PS3 will require a PS3, I better buy a PS3."

Obviously not everyone is a PC gamer, and that in most cases it costs more money to build a gamer PC (probably 600-700$ without a monitor). Although I think a gamer PC is a better investment than a 360, or a PS3, because of it's gaming, internet, media, and upgradeablity (is that a word?) that a PC is a better choice in the long run. But this is a conversation for another time. /end rant

@Rainbowblack:

Why would you feel burned? You can still play FFXIII on your PS3. I honestly don't understand this mentality. FFXIII on the 360 does not mean NO FFXIII on the PS3. Secondly, considering that that the PS3 is FFXIII's lead platform, I think it's possible we will see slightly higher quality (flamebait is go!).

Either way, there are tons of games you can enjoy on your PS3. So there's no need to feel burned. You obviously thought it was a good investment or you would not have bought one in the first place.

The thing everyone always forgets is the casual gamer. The core of people that are actually controlling the game sales.

These are the people who have no real brand loyalty. They simply buy the games that they like.

There are a lot of people who have neither a PS3 or 360 and have been waiting for that "killer app". Final Fantasy is a huge franchise that causes people to buy systems, that fact can not be ignored.

For the past few years if you wanted one of the main FF games you had have a sony system.

Fast forward to current time. Alot of people still do not own PS3's because they feel the games do not warrant the price. There waiting on that killer app. FF13 is one alot of rpg's fan's are lookin for.

But wait...its on 360 also? Uh oh choices. Now its a 50/50 choice, and thats not something you want to give to people.

Also add in the millions of xbox owners. Many of which owned a ps2 last gen and still like ps exculsives. They were gonna get a PS3 for FF13, but now its comin on there xbox also. Why spend $400-500 extra for another console when your current one can do it?

Losing exclusives hurt, its what makes your console shine. Losing FF hurts, now its up to sony to compensate.

am i the only one here whos still buying a ps3 for this despite it being multiplatform? and yes i do have a 360 which i actually prefer. it's like the ps2 of this generation. i would have thought sony would learn it's lesson about the consumer not caring about the hardware, but more the software, but it seems microsoft managed to pick up on that. oh and ffxiii versus plzkthx bai.
