Sony doesn't buy exclusivity, somehow thinks its system works photo

Jack Tretton, the cheeky scamp at the head of SCEA, has criticized rivals Microsoft and Nintendo, saying the former is too dependant on third party titles while the latter relies too heavily on first party games. Somehow this makes Sony, in its current state of bleeding exclusives like a hemophiliac and lacking a wide choice of first party games, the far superior option. Maybe in a magical dream world where Tretton gets Jessica Alba thrice nightly and eats candy that's not only healthy for you, but adds an inch to your penis with each bite. In the real world however, it's hard to see exactly how Sony's current strategy is better than those of Microsoft and Nintendo.

"We have a very different approach to exclusives than some of our competitors," Tretton told PSM magazine. "We don't buy exclusivity. We don't fund development. We don't, for lack of a better term, bribe somebody to only do a game on our platform." Yeah, that's working out real good for you guys, isn't it? This wouldn't be half as ludicrous a statement if Sony could catch a break lately, but as it stands, claiming that the company doesn't bribe third parties to develop for the PS3 exclusively doesn't really look like a positive when the system's third party games are available on a much cheaper machine. Right now, tossing money at developers is working for a certain company and Sony might want to copy that approach, along with copying achievement points. Not to unduly bash Sony (Heaven forbid we open that can of worms), but pretending to be high and mighty doesn't work when you're neither high, nor mighty right now.

Its amazing to actually see how out of touch the people at Sony are. Exclusives are what make or break a system. The sad part is, I actually want a PS3, have the money in hand, but no real reason to buy one.

IMHO, Sony blew it with Manhunt 2. They should have grabbed that as an exclusive, and released it as an AO game.

Then go all out on a marketing blitz on how the other systems are for kids. Kinda like the old Genesis does/Nintendon't ads.

Sony's trying to put themselves up on a pedestal here, instead of realizing or at least admitting that THEY'RE ALL fucking business and they're in the business to compete, and that exclusivity is something Sony has ALWAYS done.

I too have the money in hand, completely available to buy a PS3. I just want REASONS to buy it. And POTENTIAL is not ONE OF THEM. POTENTIAL is codeword for 'HEY! I KNOW SHIT LOOKS BAD NOW, BUT IF ENOUGH OF YOU DUMBASSES BUY OUR SHIT, INSTEAD OF US ACTUALLY DOING OUR JOBS, then you'll get what you want EVENTUALLY'.

Sorry Sony, maybe when MGS comes out, even then I'm pretty goddamn sure its not going to be an exclusive very long. I WANT to want a PS3, but at the moment I don't want a PS3. So no deal Sony, I don't care how much more ETHICAL you are than your competition, in fact just saying you are makes me dislike you even MORE.

/end rant

I agree with your manhunt 2 comment, if they got that as an exclusive, they would be laughing all the way to the bank.

@Fraff and casualweaponry -- I don't think Sony would be laughing anywhere near the bank. Manhunt 1's sales were negligble until there was a controversy about it. I see no reason to see why MH2 would be any different. It would probably see an initial spike because of its AO rating and then fall into obscurity like its predecessor.

Heh. Seriously. 1/2 the stuff that Sony does wouldn't be so bad if they didn't walk around like they were the king. The best is how they make all these outrageous claims like "rumble is so last gen" until the suit is settled, "we don't buy exclusives"... until they realize that developers have been jumping ship for quite a while now. Can't wait until they start throwing money at SquareEnix for an exclusive.

Ohhhhh boy. As others have suggested, it's pretty sad that anybody at Sony would be bragging at the moment. My question is, from a corporate perspective, what the hell is the problem with funding development or buying exclusivity? Funding development would be just like funding more stupid Sony television commercials, except way better for us since something useful to the consumer might come out of it.

Jack, Sony isn't more honorable, it's just strategically retarded.

Thats my point, actually.

The sickest, saddest thing is how many of my co-workers bought that turd of the 50 Cent game (Bulletproof?) simply because of the notoriety. Sony needs just about anything right now.

Someone really, REALLY needs to stage an intervention over at Sony HQ.

Can we get a funny intervention skit out of someone here today?

Sure, they don't bribe developers. And that trail of candy leading from the jr high to the back of their van is just a new type of focus group testing.

Besides, I like throwing mud in sony's eye. their arrogance since E3 has gotten to a point where I'm actually beginning to look anti-Sony in the eyes of my peers. talking about the winter crop of 360 games coming out

Acting high and mighty will probably save you some face, but unless you make Heavenly Sword and Warhawk worth 600+ bucks to play, you still aren't going to make a single cent off of me, or most of the people I know.

They need a big exclusive game, i dont think Metal gear will stay just on PS3, and if MS start producing xbox's that dont fail(mine hasnt yet :¬) ) they will be in one hell of a hole!! Come on Sony stop trying to slag others off and make some fooking games!

Sure, MS depends on 3rd party titles.

Third party titles, would be....

Halo 3? No...
Gears of War? No...
Amped 3? No...
Fusion Frenzy 2? No...
Wait! Forza 2? Oh, no...

Hmm, I wonder what first party titles MS could develop to take control away from those evil 3rd parties?!

Sony is so screwed here.
I just get this ooky feeling that 10 years from now, it'll be Sammy/Sega/Sony Computer holdings. Anyone else?

Sony are so unlikeable, normally you can get away with being this arrogance if you are a creative genius or an innovator within your medium, but Sony, Sony have succeeded at being a giant photocopier of other companies ideas, then they shamelessly spout out this "We are misunderstood victims, wer'e the good guys really".

So what are Sony if they are not the third party exclusives? They're not innovators or designers like Nintendo, they are not a company completely comfortable with the online market like Microsoft. Sony have been slowly muscled out of the market not because of the evil doings of their competitors, but because of their own failings. Deal with it Sony, this doesn't mean trying to market yourself out of a hole, try actually doing something based on real ideas.

Zardoz is so fucking right. Sony need to spend less time whining, bitching and looking over the fences of their opponents and more time proving to us WHY the PS3 is a solid investment. We don't want promises and pathetic attempts to undermine the competition, we want a reason to buy Sony. A valid, viable, tangible one. We're gamers, not the most patient of people. We want our proof of the pudding before we eat.

Sony right now is too busy copying the ideas of the competition and saying "look, me too" but fail to realise that it's ridiculously difficult to overcome market perception. MS is perceived as THE online guys, while Nintendo is seen to all as THE motion sensing guys. Sony's attempts to produce answers to those is ridiculous and pathetic when they should be finding their own "guys" to be.

Spot on, Jim.

I don't doubt that good games may come for the PS3, but until I see them... why should I care? If Sony spent less time talking to us and telling us why our opinions are wrong... and more time in development, maybe their products could do some talking and they wouldn't need to Correct us.

Read the interview with Phil Harrison in the July Game Informer. They hand-job him a little, and refuse to ask the really tough questions about the less-than-win situation with the PS3. It's particularly interesting when they ask harder questions about the state of sony gaming and he basically dodges them completely, or spouts nonsense. Example: when asked about the game drought, he responds:

"There are things we're demonstrating onscreen in games like Motorstorm, Resistance: Fall of Man and Formula 1 that cannot be done on any other system."

Sony is a PR monster if they can actually get people to believe that.

It's really easy to get exclusives when your install base is bigger God (PS2). Exclusives just fell in your lap. Now, your install base is small and the cost of development on the PS3 is through the roof. Yes, now you need a different approach.

The problem with being 'the graphics' guys would be that squeezing better graphics out of the system is already tough enough on an already tough enough to program system. You know what would provide incentive to go that extra mile?

Money.

Exclusives aren't just going to come banging on your door, just like the fans you assumed would be banging on your door didn't. Why should developers? It'd be like buying twenty grills for a McDonald's with only one cash register.

And the town's vegan. Oh, and also, there's no cashier. And the meat is tainted. And other bad things.

The problem is that they didn't plan on needing to buy exclusives, because they planned on having almost 20 million PS2 users instantly become PS3 owners just because it was the PS3. Honestly, if the PS3 had the same initial success that the wii is having, they wouldn't have to worry about exclusivity. Developers and publishers would be frothing at the mouth to sell next-gen games to 20M PS3 users. Unfortunately, there aren't that many PS2 owners ready to make the plunge. And that's no ones fault but Sony's.

This is Sony doing exactly what they did when they got their asses sued and couldn't use rumble. As soon as the rumble option was out, they've got to make the official comment that "rumble is so last-gen." But now they're working their asses off to get it back in (but considering MS owns some of that company now, could be tought). So as soon as they lose almost all exclusivity, they hop on the "exclusivity is for fags" bandwagon. Real fucking mature. He even slips up during the interview, says that they dont fund development (which is insanely important for companies and vital for a system) and then quickly follows that up with the lame-ass bribe comment. I own a ps3, and xbox, and a Wii, and i'm no fanboy, but boy are the wii and ps3 fucking useless.

Now who's retarded? (Me still, actually.) The 360 does have a very solid 3rd party line-up this holiday, and the 1st/2nd party line-up is obviously stellar: Crackdown, Forza, Halo, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Blue Dragon, etc.

Well, you also have to try and keep in mind that from a marketing standpoint, you never show you weakness even when its obviously apparent.
So claiming everything is fine and making comparisons, while running around in the background like a chicken with its head cut off trying to figure out how to dig themselves out of the mud, it isn't surprising that they come off the way they do. Not a good method at all, but a common one.
