Sony disappointed in third party PSP support photo

The PSP is an amazing piece of kit, but everybody knows that the system doesn't get as much love from publishers as other systems. This has not gone unnoticed by Sony, and the company's Worldwide Studio boss, Shuhei Yoshida, is all glum about the situation:

"Yeah, it’s really, really disappointing and it’s a lost opportunity for the third-parties... They should look at what the PSP can do for their titles and the potential for the business that their IP has."

It's true -- the PSP is capable of some amazing stuff, as Capcom and Square Enix like to prove. Sadly, however, nobody else seems to care very much. Yoshida is at least more positive about the PSP's Japanese success:

"We have to show by examples. What’s happening in Japan is interesting -- because of the massive success of Monster Hunter, Japanese publishers realize, 'here's a resource.'

Lots of people are playing PSP in groups of fours and when you go to Japan it’s hard to find a train or a bar where you don’t see some people playing a PSP. So other publishers in Japan are seeing these consumers, and thinking, 'Wow, we can make games for those consumers'."

That's terrific for Japan n' all, but sadly that's never translated so well over here. It continues to be a shame, because the PSP is somewhat awesome as a system. It's just not awesome as a continuous source of fresh new titles, and we in the West need more than Monster Hunter to sell a handheld.

I think it's balanced by the console having such a great homebrew scene. Like Yin and Yang but with PSP.

I think all this is great but with custom firmware being the main reason PSP games don't sell or PSPs in general, aren't big, is because of that. Outside of kids, I really see people playing DSs on Metros. Rarely do I see a group of people (or even 1) playing a PSP on a train or out and about.

Though I think some blame goes to the fact most of the games aren't really online pushed...and americans want those online enabled games...

Wow, Sony complaining about a lack of 3rd party support. Several years ago, this would have been an April Fool's Day joke.

I think Square has hit on an interesting idea of using the PSP to get their mobile games outside of Japan. With Final Fantasy XIII Agito, Parasite Eve 3rd Birthday, and possibly Kingdom Hearts Coded getting the treatment, its an interesting line of support for the PSP. Now if only they'd translate and port FFIV: The After to the PSP, I'd be one happy camper.

Well I'm sure if they remade Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 for the PSP, that would sell. Also make more online enabled games, put some trophies on their firmware, and people like me will be giddy with joy.

Like Shin Oni said, I think Custom Firmwares are the reason companies doesn't support the PSP too much. Yes, I know that PSX had its chip, but the difference is that PSP has a very serious competitor: the Nintendo DS. PSX didn't have actual competence (N64 had some nice games, but Sony had all 3rd parties at its feet and it was way cheap to develop for it).

@el_chack well at least for me if it is a good game I will purchase it and rip it to the stick, I prolly have about 20 games that I have purchased for PSP and I will buy unleashed on tuesday so long as it is in stock when I go to buy my ps3 copy of it that I have for in-store pre-order- otherwise I will still purchase it later- if it is a good game, I want the UMD for it and the booklets- unfortunately there are a ton of crap games that are put out for the PSP, and at a price tag of $30-40 I don't want to go and buy most of them.
