Sony did NOT win an award for SIXAXIS photo

Wait, what? But everyone said they did! Yes, everyone said they did because apparently Sony told them all they did. But they didn't. Confused? Gather around ladies and gentlemen ... this is a hell of a story. Probably the best publicity Sony's gotten yet.

Seamus Byrne of Hydrapinion decided to do a looking into the matter. The SIXAXIS won an award but the Wiimote didn't? Something seemed fishy. After managing to get in touch with the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, this is what he found out:

A follow up message from Christine Chin from NATAS tells us Sony has it all wrong. The award was for the original dual shock controller. Here is her message in full:

I understand you had contacted Cheryl Daly, Director of Communications at NATAS to confirm if Sony won for their PS3 controller. This is incorrect, Sony won for their dual shock analog controller. The award is from the Video Game Technology Group. It was nominated by our internal group and considered along with the Nintendo D-Pad both of which were considered Emmy worthy for the development of the generation of controllers that followed the classic joysticks.

I would like to confirm that Sony did not win for their PS3 controller, they won for their Dual Shock Analog controller.

So there you have it. This makes a lot more sense, and Sony's press release was flat out incorrect. Best case, an error. Worst case...

Chrstine also said she will clarify this with Sony.

This is a riot. Honestly Sony ... I just don't know what to say.

it makes perfect sense for them to lie about it, lets lie about what we actually won the award for then maybe that will help the playstation 3 sales along.... my friend has always disliked sony even when it came to software and how they have run certain MMO's, im starting to see why he dislikes them, and its not because im a M$ fanboy at all because im not but a company shouldnt do things like that to boast things if its not true.

Wow...talk about embarrassing, I mean, how bad is it that its not the sixaxis that won, but the Dual Shock controller.
On the other hand, Sony still ended winning.

Doesn't surprise me. This is the exact same bullshit spin tactic they won over many people with on the PS2. Seems this time round the public are more dubious of grand claims (or just the grand price) and bloggers aren't being drowned out by the swag whore journalists.

Is it not a bit ironic that Sony just ditched their now AWARD WINNING controller? It just seems as if the timing couldn't be much worse. I do love my Dual Shock though, the PS2 for all its flaws is a wonderful console to own.

They didn't ditch it, it's the same thing with more crappy motion sensing and less rumble.
They actually should have ditched it more, a better d-pad and better analog sticks would be appreciated.

When I read this then saw djnexus' avatar, I laughed my ass off.

Anyway, silly Sony, Trix is for the Dual Shock 2.

I still love that freakin' controller out of all the others. It brings me so many memories...

Um...so they're awarding them for the Dual Shock now? Like, 10 YEARS after the fact? And didn't Nintendo beat Sony to that "innovation", too, with the Rumble Pak? I knew mainstream entertainment was out of touch with video games, but a decade late? Holy shit...

Re: the N64 gamepad - the rumble pack was an optional add-on. The Dual Shock was self-contained. They can't give an award to "N64 gamepad with optional Rumble Pak". Besides, the N64 controller was awful, and the Rumble Pak ate batteries.

As for the timing, consider that the other product under consideration was "the Nintendo D-Pad" following "classic joysticks." I assume they refer to Atari-era, there.

Well the reason the Dtoid is getting questioned is that that is not what appears on the EMMY site.(I'll side with the robot)

I can see given how similar the products are that there was confusion beteen the two. The award vindicates Sony decision to keep the dual shock design and tweek it a bit.

They won another emmy in video games for the XMB design.

The other divisions did far far better

The rumble pak was optional, but I ask you, who didn't own one? It took sony a whole generation to get rumble in their games. This is N64 (innovation) Vs PS2 (trend following). I must admit, Sony are great at borrowing other people's successes and making them all shiny and appealing to the adult market.

Most been a slip up at Sony's side, I can't imagine that they are so pathetic that they gonna lie on purpose about a some innovation award. Then again if there was one company who would do stuff like that it would be Sony.

Yeah, the Dual Shock didn't have a rumble feature. The Dual Shock 2 for the PS2 did; but that wasn't until 2000. Four years after the N64 came out, two or three after the Rumble Pak came out. I think the dual analog joysticks is probably what they were giving the award for, in any case Sony just combined the N64's joystick and the dual-control and form factor of the Virtual Boy (yes that techoabortion) to make their much-vaunted controller. Sure it was better than the sum of its parts, but it was just a clever evolutionary design, not 'innovation.'
