Sony developing 200GB PS3

Sony developing 200GB PS3 photo
     The almighty dollar

Look I drink ...

... but I do know the difference between a rumor and a fact.

Example:                                                                                                      Rumor = There are plenty of games on the PlayStation 3, and Blu-ray makes them better.
Fact = Sony is pursuing a more expensive (Yes, it's possible) version on the PS3 with a 200GB hard drive.

Developers are already hard at work to make sure that this happens sometime in 2008 to compete with the needs of the U.S. and North American market. Sony has yet to release an official statement concerning size, but Satoshi Fukuoka, a Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. spokesman in Tokyo, has stated:

"It's in line with our strategy as we had planed to choose models based on consumer needs,'' Fukuoka said. "The larger model, which retails for $599 in the U.S. and is $100 more expensive than the smaller version, accounts for about 90 percent of sales....The company is also considering introducing the model with a bigger hard disk..." [Via Bloomberg]

After sending out e-mails, instant messages, making a few phone calls, and doing a ton of reading through Sony's research and development charts, I found out that a 120GB model was in the works, but would not be a good choice considering the recent upgrade to the Xbox 360 of the same size -- not to mention the PS3's lifespan needs to incorporate a larger drive for future needs. A 200GB hard drive fits this model that Sony wants to offer.

A few other drives have been tested in between this 120 to 200GB range, but 200 seems to be the magic number. While that is thoughtful of Sony, it is also a little disappointing that they missed this when creating a console supposedly having a 10-year shelf life. The price point of the PS3 was in fact a large part of the reason. I am assuming that Sony is under the impression that we want to spend more. The U.S. market shows this with just under 10% of the PS3s being purchased at the lower price point.

If any console needs a larger HDD, it's the PS3. With the 360, I can stream all my media from my computer, so the only HDD space being taken up is by demos, trailers, game saves, and TV shows (which can be re-downloaded at a later time for free).

If I want to enjoy media on my PS3 (without the use of 3rd party tools), I need to have that media residing on the HDD of my PS3.

It just blows my mind that Sony is trying to find ways to make the PS3 more expensive, rather than cheaper.

Hey Sony, if you want to make a more desirable console, how about some games??? You know, those things that made the Playstation brand so well known?

...yeah, it's been a long day at work, and I want to go home.

Unnecessary. Sony already gave us the means to very easily replace our internal hard drive with practically any hard drive we see fit. I mean, I've got a 320 gig external, I just run it to the ps3 via usb when I want to do the "media" thing. Sony wins on hard drive and ease of hard drive hands down.

If I had to guess, instead of lowering the price, they'll just give us a "better" (better = 200 gig) ps3 at 600.

I think we're all missing the big picture here.

Ron posted an intelligent, hell, insightful post.

Lets recap.

Summa posting pro-nintendo posts,
Ron posting something intelligent, based on games

2 early signs of the forth coming apocalypse, if Rev. Anthony ever does rate a game above 5, we should all fear the worst.

(PS. amazing post, Sony's distance from their core audience couldn't seem further.)

What the hell kind of market do they think they're going to crack with this one?

Like the millions of people who aren't interested in the PS3 are going to go "Yes! A bigger hard drive's what it needed! How DID those clever Sony guys know what I was waiting for?".

And they're only ever going to alienate the people who've already paid over a premium price for what's going to be the second class model soon. Is Ebay strong enough to take the weight of that many unsellable PS3s for a second time once they're not even the top model?

This is just panic management all over.

sales are slumping, consumers claim the console is too expensive.

sony makes a bigger, more expensive console.

this is the console mfg equivalent to mel brook's 'the producers'.

i think ALL game companies should focus on producing more quality games instead of media-center-esque devices. while my 360 is nice, i don't think i will ever need any more than the 20 gigs it came with. game saves just don't get that big. the day i use the extra media functions on my 360 is the day 360 drives come packaged in computers (ie never). until then, i'm gonna wait for more quality games like mass effect, shadowrun, and yes, even too human, while ps3 owners wait for... wait... what was the name of that great ps3 game coming out... hmm...

BTW, since you can go buy a PS3 right now AND your own 200GB drive, what's being done to go specifically "develop" a 200GB PS3? Can't they just pull a different drive off the shelf and create a new SKU for stores? What else is there to do?

most people dislike the idea of taking apart their machine and even lack the know-how involved to upgrade their own systems. if you can do this yourself, good for you. this announcement then was obviously not meant for you. on a different note, the fact that sony is upgrading storage capacity is nothing new -- they make hardware and know storage is an important aspect of things -- the thing people miss is that they want their games to take up as much space as possible. with this added storage, you're left to wonder if you can also download games of massive size as well.

Wait, so MS releases 0 gig and 20 gig 360, Sony releases 20 gig and 60 gig PS3, MS counters that by releasing the 120 gig Elite, and Sony cancels the 20 gig but comes back with the 200 gig PS3.

Okay.

None of this makes a difference to current or future PS3 owners because you can add any size external HD on the PS3 today. And you don't have to pay 180 bucks for 120 gigs.

So if this story is true, then I see Sony adding in shit with this supposed 200 model and bringing it out at 600 bucks and lowering the 60 gig system to $500. And I din't see the Elite dropping price this year as it's just now coming out.

So all in all. This whole thing is dumb. Just give me Little Big Planet and Halo 3 and we'll call it a day.

These friends are also laughing at Sony for the price they are charging. Heck, they are practically giving away the PS3. These guys must really love their customers to keep going out of their way for us the way they do. [/sarcasm}

That's great and all, but my PS2 has a 120 Gig hard drive and has had it for years now.

I guess since I'm both a computer and console gamer, this news with it's tiny hard drive doesn't exactly impress me.

I'm also of the opinion that the PS3 in general is a waste of money.

A 200GB hard drive is not going to force anyone to pay more. It's just giving gamers options. Just like Microsoft doesn't force a HD-DVD drive down your throat, Sony isn't going to come into your house and hold your Sixaxis just out of reach until you buy their new shit.

Although a price drop is unlikely anytime soon, by the time this bad boy rolls around if Sony is still afloat they will likely have come to their senses and shaved a few dollars off their multimedia monstrosity.

The only real downside is that this is just more freaking hardware and not an announcement about anything interesting like, you know... some games.

I call BS on this, as far as I know 2.5" SATA drives currently top out at 160GB (around $100). Do you really think a 200GB drive will be cheap when it comes out? I know Sony likes jamming bleeding-edge hardware into the PS3, but surely even they are smart enough to know this strategy of raising the price of their console isn't going to get people to run out and buy one. But then again, they are $ony...

There are 200GB SATA drives. Apple's been installing them in their laptops for a few months now. I wouldn't recommend getting a 200GB right now though. They're only 4200 RPM drives, and quite unsuitable for anything other than storage.

More choices Mr. Haley? I'm pretty sure Sony wants you to buy their more expensive SKU. The reason they discontinued the 20 gig PS3 is to counter MS's Elite. No, they don't want to give you choices. They removed the cheaper SKU to add a more expensive and more pointless SKU. Hmm....does any one else see where this is going?

Oh crap, I hate being considered the Sony Fanboy around here, I dont even own a PS3, but crap .

Ok guys, wake up call, Sony has already realized they screwed up their launch, big time, thats why they used Ken as their scape goat and practically fired him remember?

A CHEAPER PS3 is in the making (despite what it may look like), unfortunaly it may hit all the way until 2008. Lets face 2 small facts for a second.

1.-The Ps3 (believe it or not) is CHEAP from a tech only side view, the blu ray player alone costs more than $1000 (and thats just ONE component of the PS3) Is the more expensive console out there, but is also the less expensive blu ray in the market.

2.-They are getting sold! not an amazing rate mind you, but some people are ACTUALLY buying them aproximately 2.5 million people have bought a PS3 worldwide at premium price, despite not having enough titles, early problems, bad publicity and Sony insane and stupid advertising, they are getting SOLD.

True, they are making bigger HD and playing "mine is bigger than yours" with MS, but are they unaware their sales are not spectacular due to their price? Of course not. Just this morning Kotaku ran an history on how worried the heads of sony were in the Uk due to the low sales, and mentioned "pricing changes" may be in the way. (and in case you missed the note, they DID cut down the price of the PS3 in UK stores very recently)

Granted I'm kinda late, but whatever. Someone said that in order to enjoy media on your PS3 you have to have it on the HDD

Not so

Just last night I was watching Eureka 7 on my friend's ps3 straight from my flash drives. It supports .avi files .mpg files and a couple others I don't remember. But maybe this is exclusive to the 60gb model?
