Sony details PSP to Vita game transfer process photo

More and more people are getting their hands on the PlayStation Vita, whether it's an import or Western unit. There's no doubt in my mind that a lot of users are trying to do the exact same thing I'm going to do as soon as I get one -- attempt to load all my old PSP games immediately.

Well, have no fear, Sony is here!  In the form of a new official guide, Sony helps you step by step; day by day. The two basic methods to play PSP games on your Vita are to either download them directly from the Vita's PlayStation Storefront (which also allows access to your download history), or to connect your Vita directly to your PS3 using the included USB cable and use the PS Vita's Content Manager.

If your favorite PSP game is not on the currently 275 strong list, don't fret. As Sony states: "Don’t worry if you don’t see your favorite title here now; more PSP titles will be made available for PS Vita play in the coming weeks. We’ll keep this list current and let you know when updates are made."

So... it's free, right? If you arleady have the game you can just bring it over, right? No fooling?

@SOS
In the US, as long as you abide by Sony's device restrictions, and you have downloaded the game on the PSN and not trying to convert a UMD, you're fine.

If you've downloaded the PSP title on PSN before, yes. Its free. Just hit Download on your Vita, and it will download in the background and self-install.

The official guide details, among other things, the process one must undergo to get your UMD based games onto the Vita. Through use of a Playstation branded c-clamp, and various Sony approved prayers, the process of osmosis will allow data to be transferred through the touch screen on the back of the system. Once the transfer is complete, the UMDs are to be burned as a sacrifice to Lord Hirai, Emperor and living god.

I saw the very first part of your comment(ending at c-) in the preview you get for hovering over an article and actually thought Sony had made a device to transfer your UMDs. I was pretty esthetic and rushed over to the site. I need to get more sleep :D

Can the PS2 titles available PSN be played on the Vita?

You would just buy the PSP games on the Vita's store and download them.
@Tha_Meat
No, they haven't said anything about being able to do it. I hope it's added eventually.

No UMD support, no buy. The DS & DSLite both had GBA support and that was ~3or4 generations after the GBA, the PSP was just a single generation ago.

This is why is Sony has become $ony.

I just looked at my psn account and saw: Twisted Metal, Peace Walker, both Portable Ops, Tekken and Syphon Filter. Plus all the minis and psn games. It's really hard to resist now. I have yet to play half of these (peace walker I have in the collection, but still...) and could have a decent library from the start. Plus I was playing Gravity Daze on a demo unit along with Wipeout and damn. Resolve failing. Gravity Daze, Unit 13 and all my psn stuff..... Damn you pride, standing in my way (i promised myself I would wait).

Shit plus psone support down the line. Once that hits I'm caving. All my old school FF's (just got 5 for free!), twisted metal 2, more syphon filters and others. That's when Ill cave. Unless they announce ps2 support on release or a few weeks after, then fuck you pride. I gots to get my generations of gaming on the portable.

SO uh, I've probably just got bad reading comprehension or something, but I'm not seeing any mention of UMDs or anything... There's the bit about the US not getting that, but I though before there wouldn't be a transfer program whatsoever so at least there was progress, right? But am I just fucked? All I want is my Metal Gear and Monster Hunter. Can I just have that Sony?

I'm not seeing Dead Head Fred. A comfortable analog stick on the VIta is the only reason I haven't played it yet on my PSP.

Man, all this backlash over umds just strikes me as whining.

Umds had to go, but at least you can still play the damn games. It sucks but there wasn't much of a way around it.

Keep your psp if you want to play your discs.

Seriously people... There are going to be more good Vita games than good UMDs in the first week. You bought it for the PSP. You should be happy the technological leap is so great that it can't easily play old games...

Or don't buy a Vita. Who cares? Stop bitching about features that aren't essential to playing Vita games on a Vita.

I still have no idea why you would care to play PSP games on a Vita. Aside from convenience, I guess.

@Rammstein: I'm pretty sure you were "Sony product = no buy" from the very start.

While the lack of some PSP games is not a deal breaker for me, I can easily see why people want it. Up-scaling, convenience, and best of all, you can map buttons to the Vita's second analog stick - making games like Ape Escape PSP and MGS: Peace Walker that much more enjoyable.

For a lot of PSP games, it's almost like the way it's meant to be played.

Everyone should check out the PSP games. So many awesome games!

Also, might as well dl them (to have them playable) across any VITA/PSP w/ no fussing with old formats.

@DLZ and Sean Payne:

See, I could see that, but not only do both of those sound like inane bitching, the problem here isn't a lack of ability, it's a lack of effort on Sony's part. Regardless of your opinion on the UMD transfer, it does exist. There's a program for it in Japan, that is missing in America with no explanation. That's the real problem here. Plus, the download system wasn't introduced until later in the system's life, so it's kind of frustrating to have backwards compatibility on all these games we like and have and have to buy them again when we could just transfer them with a system we aren't offered.

Bullshit. Why are some games that are Sony published (so no licensing issues) available in the Jap store and not the west? I'm looking at Gran Turismo here.

Pretty sure they're going to release it individually to "maximize brand awareness" and generally be cocks about the whole thing.
