Sony confirms redesigned PlayStation 2 console, replaces innie with outtie photo

Gamasutra is reporting that Sony Japan have confirmed plans to release a redesigned PlayStation 2.

The hardware will be smaller than before, dropping in weight from 850 grams to 720 grams. The consoles AC adapter is moving inside the unit, and will replace the external brick found on current slim models. The "refreshed" unit is to go on sale in Japan on December 22nd, and will be available in three colors -- "Charcoal Black," "Ceramic White," and "Satin Silver." While previous rumors have had the console price coming down as well, this will not be the case (the console will remain at its ¥16,000 price).

No word on an official release outside of Japan, but reports have the new console not seeing Europe until early 2008. With the recently released Singstar bundle, it's likely that North America will have to wait a bit longer as well.

I need to see pictures before I decide to buy that. The slim is already awesome enough.

um... why? Even though the PS2 was selling strong for a while after the 360 first launched, it now has no real big titles coming... sorta no point.

I still have my fatty. And I second covah's comment. There aren't many big titles coming out for the system (or its big brother, zing!). Why buy one?

Wait I figured it out. Sony just wants you to buy one of these INSTEAD of buying their PS3 SKUs that allow BC (shit if I know which do or don't anymore and I even pay attention to the industry... poor soccer moms). Buy a $400 gimped PS3 AND THEN buy a PS2 to get the same functionality you could have gotten if Sony execs weren't douches who didn't think people liked BC capability.

Yeah, that must be it.

Does this new PS2 have rumble controllers, or is that old tech?

Sony, let it go man... let it go...

I blame the losses for the PS3 on the PS2 not going down in price. I already have one, but man, that sucks.

Didn't Japan ban the sale of gaming consoles recently? Kaz Hirai must be giving reach arounds to all the government officials.

From what little is on the web-ar-netz it seems that while the law does explicitly *exclude* all external AC-DC adapters (for now) it doesn't specifically *include* internal ones, just ones with unsafe amounts of lead and other heavy metals (are you listening, China?) The buzz going around seems to ban most self powered tech built before 2000, but we can all remember that friggin' everything had external adapters seven to ten years ago, so probably even the current PS2 brick doesn't contain lead-based components. The Japanese environmental standards are pretty stringent on recycling to the point that it's not economically feasible to do much else.

Also, handjobs.

Dude, the SNES and NES re-releases were awesome.

But this does look pretty silly. It looks exactly the same as the original PS2, except midgetized.

"um... why? Even though the PS2 was selling strong for a while after the 360 first launched, it now has no real big titles coming... sorta no point."

I think I do see the point.

Sony knows that more people are most likely going to buy the 40GB PS3's since they're MUCH cheaper though they have no PS2 backwards capability. In which, they'll focus on the PS2 for awhile knowing some people might buy another PS2 with all those facts. It's pretty much the last squeeze out of the PS2 market, but on the other hand these new PS2's MIGHT be useful. Honestly, those slim PS2s sucked.

It should be interesting to see the new design.

Wedge, are you seeing pictures of a design we haven't? I don't think Sony's released the specs on the new one yet - Mr. Chester's photo IS the old one.
