We haven't had much corporate showboating for a while, so here's Sony's Peter Dille to set things right. The VP of marketing believes that his company is breathing down Microsoft's neck, and it's only a matter of time before the PS3 beats the Xbox 360 in terms of sales.
"I'm confident we'll be around in ten years and I can say that because we've done it twice. PS3 will be around in ten years and probably much longer than that," boasts Dille. "We can be passionate fans, but I don't think they'll be around in ten years so I'm very confident we'll pass them within that time frame. We've got 31 million worldwide right now -- they've got 39 million [units sold]. I don't even need to go out ten years.
"I'm not going to make any predictions for your interview today other than we'll pass them, but you look at where we are today and where they are today, and they had an opportunity to sprint as far ahead of us as possible when they had the head start. Well, we're breathing down their necks and they can see us in the rear-view mirror and it's not going to take too long to pass them."
Confident words indeed. Do you think Sony's tortoise-and-hare approach will see it through in the long run, or has its slow start has been too costly? Also, how many more times can Peter Dille cram "ten years" into a single statement?

Also, I'd be pretty freaked out if someone came into my shower holding a coffee and smiling. @_@
Sony is so far up their own ass.
PS3 numbers are estimated to be 34 Million units
Also it funny Jim.... when you interviewed Aaron Greenberg and he mentioned Project Natal non-stop you said "This guy is good at his job" but when a Sony guy mention the 10 year life cycle you suddenly change approach
Until you learn new tricks, use your head and put yourselves in the shoes of the customer, I don't see things changing much. 360 is still easy and cheaper to develop for, with a far better online service and support.
When Sony can touch MS in these key areas and stop draggin their knuckles, things might shift.
The Ps3 being around the next ten years? Most likely not.
This was yet another sarcasm which meant the guy was good at spouting bullshit. It wasn't a compliment and Sterling did not change approach. >_>
A) The 'good at his job' bit was clear sarcasm.
B) My approach for both was exactly the same.
also, sarcasm....
I will say that he could be accurate, but if you consider that Sony's massive drive before Christmas with heavy marketing nad a huge price-cut for the system managed to get them 50,000 more sales that the already established and older Xbox360.
50,000 is not that significant, and I'm sure privately Sony will be pretty miffed.
I could not care what happens though, really. I like playing games not economics.
Wow, you're really a touchy little Sony fanboy. You have no concept of sarcasm when it comes to your favorite console. Get a life, and realize that it's not really a war. The PS3 and XBOX do not care about you. Microsoft and Sony are faceless corporations after one thing, and one thing only...your money. So get your head out of their ass so you can actually see clearly.
He was paid in Micronimonies.
Not so sure about the PS3 though. The PS2 was doing its own thing at the time, which maintained interest. Whereas the PS3 seems to be pretty much the same as a 360 or PC. They may still be selling. But, i cant believe that in 10 years the PS3 will still be hot shit
Seriously though Sony is already in a difficult state this gen and they should not be "cocky" like Microsoft (which is all the time and that eventualy will lead to downfall)
Good theory about techies buying PS3's. Im not arguing against it, i had never really considered it. But, I think that would be a VERY small percentage of people. I personally think that most people buy out of brand loyalty and past experience.
The PS1 didn't have that big of a lifecycle. It was maybe 5 years old when Sony released the PS2, and support for the PS1 shortly fizzled. The PS2 had a long lifecycle because both developers and consumers were scared to switch to a $600 system. What support is the PS2 having now? Sure Sony still sells consoles, but does it have any new games? Is SONY even supporting it with new games? They say that the PS2 is still alive, but where is the company support to prove it?
So sure, MAYBE the PS3 will be around for 10 years, but will Sony be supporting it for 10 years with new software, or will it merely just churn out consoles the way they're doing with the PS2, and just hope to sell copies of old games?
Most advanced hardware? I don't even care about the blue ray disc, nevermind whatever technology it uses. I don't think a lot of PS3 users are techies...
You may well be right. I don't really have anything to support my theory, other than scattered Internet posts.
haha, scattered internet posts are enough evidence. Stick it on wikipedia and then it will be FACT! :D
I think the PS3 is breathing down the 360's neck, this time last year or two years ago you were considered a pretentious rich kid for buying a PS3, it had a small library, and everyone you knew was playing on LIVE.
Whereas now many many people are making the switch, the PS3 community has grown substantially, and PSN is a perfectly suitable online gaming service, sure if you really NEED cross game chat, you're not going to get it, but if you just want to game online it works flawlessly. Personally i wouldn't be able to play with many of my friends if i had an xbox as they're all on PSN now.
Also, a massive number of people have bought 2+ Xboxes. Remember that.
I think in terms of general public opinion, the PS3 is the better system, however in sales it's still the 360 as people buy them because all their friends play on LIVE.
I've personally seen a number of my Xbox only friends (5 in the last 3 months) get rid of their 360's and buy a PS3. They're all very happy with their decision.
That's the funny thing with sales numbers, many many people bought a 360 early, then a PS3 later, so if we're looking for which is most popular NOW then you would ideally need to remove the sales for those who have graduated from the 360 to the PS3.
If I sell 10 cars, then a new car comes out and 5 of my customers trade in my car for the new one, on top of 4 sales of the new car, sure the original sold more (10) than the new one (9) but right now there are 5 people driving my car and 9 driving the newer, betterur one.
That was a weird comparison, but you get the point, want to be very careful about using conjecture in Jim's courtroom.
Think something we can all agree on is that the PS3 will still be around in 10 years, as will the 360. Question is will people still be buying 360's when the 720 is out, and will people still buy PS3's when the PS4 is out?
If the PS2 is anything to go by then they probably will as the PS4 will be real expensive, whereas the 720 is likely going to be cheap compared, and will outsell the 360.
I'm rambling here. I'll just go ahead and say...
"WHOO 3CKSBAWK5 5UCK5 BALLS AND IS FOR TEH GHEYS!!111! TRIPEL IS THE BESTERS BLURAYZ FTW!1ONE1!!"
This one is pretty near from a Bullseye, remember how PS3 started? It was a mess, few exclusives were good... Or at least decent, and the manufacture problems, and even the same Wii was kicking they asses off, but later all became more stabilized, now PS3 has juicy things to offer, I´m not a sony fan, but for a gamer, that´s good and that maybe prolonges PS3´s life a bit...
Still I don´t like that again, they reflect their actions with base of MS actions, jesus.
I had to go with what popped up in my skull.
Awesome!
I bought a PS3 mainly because it doubles as a blu-ray player, as I imagine many people do. Also it didn't hurt that my brother in-law was willing to sell me his 80 gig, backward compatible model for $250.
For me it's a bout time, rather than money. I already upset my girlfriend enough playing just the one console, that if I bought another I think she would leave me. Serious.
Also, it's nice you guys put Summa on the front page every once in a while.
The 360 only has the edge through price point and an early release.
Whats the use in all this fanboy BS?
