Sony CEO talks Wii, says sales aren't 'hurting' Sony photo

Sony CEO, Howard Stringer, recently spoke to German outlet Welt Online about research and development cost, PlayStation 3 demand, and even the impact that the Wii has on the PS3. Not surprisingly, Stringer revealed that Sony is losing money on their newest console and games are the only source of profit at this point.

Interestingly, Stringer then begins congratulating Nintendo for capturing the casual market that Sony has traditionally sought out with titles like SingStar and says that the Wii doesn’t pose a threat to Sony’s plans.
The major difference lies in the fact that Nintendo makes money with the hardware alone, which may be a superior business model. But the Wii is not succeeding at our expense – it is not hurting us. We decided years ago to build a game console that offers much greater functionality. The PlayStation 3 has an enormous processor; it is gradually emerging as the central server in our users' homes.

Even though I’m just a couch CEO, I think the Wii may be throwing a tiny wrench into Sony’s plans of global domination with their console. I find it hard to believe that a console that sells as quickly and as well as the Wii isn’t affecting the potential of a PS3 in every home.

So is the "enormous processor" the reason my PS3 weighs so damn much?

picture reminds me of 1984(movie) for some reason...
I doubt that wii is hurting ps3 too much... maybe more so now but later, people are going to realize how wiiak the wii (see what i did thar) is in terms of multimedia... 360 & ps3 are in their own league in the long run... I dont see wii offering movies or really anything other than shitty mini-games... wii had the potential to blow these guys out of the water but... they just aren't living up to it at the moment... or anywhere close for that matter...

Enormous processor? What the hell? Why have so many developers taken to this "our hardware is head-and-shoulders above" sell? It's clearly been bullshit for 3 years, and shows little sign of changing.

I'd question your assertion that Wii offers nothing than mini-games, but you lost all credibility after stating that Wii isn't "living up to [potential]". How many Wii systems sold worldwide, and how quickly?

Sony fanboys really need to start signing a new tune, because even Stringer realizes that Wii is the top dog (when it comes to sales, popularity, and business decisions) this generation.

Market share for their target demographic is what they are worried about now, and still working on. When they've got that figured out, then you will see them do like microsoft and hold an E3 that consists almost entirely of "casual" shovelware.

They have to be making money on the PSP by now, I mean everyone in Japan has like 3 of them, right?

I wonder if he will say it would hurt Sony when these crazy high Wii sales make Nintendo the #1 maker of game players for the first time in 13 years.
