I laughed.
Anyways, Sony says their reaction was satisfactory and then went on to back that up with statistics clearly culled from his rectal ridges. Well 100% of this breach was handled as if led by a brigade of toddlers. There, now my rectum is cleaner as well for having scraped shit statistics out of it.
If wanting to be informed ASAP when a breach happens makes me "self-entitled," so be it. I don't really consider "ASAP" to be week.
So, no customers would have wondered why the service was mysteriously down? No one would have postulated that a major, unannounced infrastructure change was underway? No one would be curious why we all had to chance our passwords at the same time?
Fuck. The people. Running. This company.
We are not imbeciles. We have a right to be upset at Sony's mishandling of our personal data. It's unbelievable to see Sony in the same breath play up the problem but downplay its impact. The Japanese government seems to think something is amiss, and I think most reasonable people would agree. Knowing for over a week that you had user data compromised, but not being willing to tell them about it, then learning after the fact that there was an even earlier intrusion that your stupid fucking company didn't even know about means you sure as shit mishandled it, and you kept people in the dark when knowing about the problem would have been most helpful.
This is an unnecessary and almost insulting statement to make before the rebuilding of the network is even finished. I see fewer and fewer reasons why I would want to support Sony as a company, and this is coming from a longime fan of their platforms and studios.

Saying "43% contact them within a month" means almost nothing without further context.
When CREDIT CARD INFORMATION IS STOLEN, yeah 5 minutes isn't fast enough.
I've gotten letters from my bank warning me that my information MIGHT have been stolen and instead of telling me to check my credit report, they tell me in the SAME LETTER that they have already given me free credit protection for a YEAR and extends BACKWARDS. I don't care if you spend "5 minutes" to tell me, you can have 5 WEEKS to tell me, but when you tell me don't fucking tell me 'your credit card information might have been stolen' and then wait ANOTHER WEEK to tell me you're FINALLY giving me free credit protection..
Yes, the royal "we" are telling you that.
Why?
To quote you again: "This was an unprecedented situation."
If it were me, you know I would tell people that one of our servers containing personal information had been hacked. I don't know what they took or whether or not there was anything to take on it, I'd just give them a heads up and then do my preliminary examination. It didn't take a solid week for Sony to figure out that personal data may or may not be at risk.
Yeah, I can criticize Sony. Just because its a precedent that every other retailer is shitty doesn't mean that Sony can't be held to criticism.
You're never going to be told about a breach immediately. Ever.
There is no corporation that will report an intrusion without investigating the depth of that intrusion first. It's not going to happen.
In fact, intrusions are pretty common, it's just that most of them don't get very far. If you got notified every time someone got a little further into a network than they were supposed to, then the internet would fly into a panic. Now, do we really want each every one of these intrusions to immediately result in an "ALL YOUR INFORMATION MAY HAVE BEEN STOLEN" notification?
I do question how long it took, and there should be an investigation into that, but people who think each and every security breach should be met with an immediate pressing of the panic button just don't know what they are actually talking about. A few days is absolutely understandable, especially in a case like this where the data thieves were thorough enough to delete logs. If they were good enough, then figuring out just how far the intruders got might have been very difficult.
Yeah, I know I'm gonna get an "OMG UR A SONY FANBOY LOL SDF" from the dumber commenters, but I'd say the exact same thing if it were Microsoft or Steam.
Now where's my free InFamous goddamnit
Tell it all, tell it fast, tell the truth.
Sony should have been forthright and transparent with their customers from the beginning.
Sony's response was to shut down PSN, and claim it was just maintenance. Keep everyone in the dark for six days, announce the data breach included customer data and they had no way of knowing if their credit card data had been compromised.
What they should have done is let people know from the start that their info may have been part of the breach and that they were working diligently to detemine the full scope of the intrusion. People may have even felt sorry for Sony, honesty has that affect in a crisis situation.
The recent events will likely be remembered as an example of how to mismanage a crisis from beginning to end.
...and by the way Sir Howard Stringer, you should never get defensive. It just makes you look guilty.
"People will always find something to bitch about no matter what."
Yes, it's unfortunate everyone "found" this system breach and started bitching about it... the audacity.
Sony is plodding and slow and completely oblivious to public perception and it's quotes like that that'll just keep making them a big fucking target.
They still haven't proven that our data is secure nor have they proven that proper security measures are even place let alone robust.
I gotta agree, if he had said "You know what? Shit happens." I would've at least understood him, because yes, sometimes shit happens.
@SephirothX - Howard? Is that you? Or is it gimp you pay to suck you off and make it all better?
Nah, I didn't miss his point, but in regards to "...my week wasn't fast enough?" I was just generally curious as to how long it took for Gizmodo and clan to inform everyone about their breach as that's my only frame of reference here...
And I know businesses that will inform you as soon as they suspect something. It certainly doesn't seem to take much on Sony's part to tell me about the weekly PSN deals via mass email. They couldn't have gotten on that email a week sooner?
Calling bullshit on that.
