Today marks the fifteenth anniversary of the original PlayStation's launch in North America. The little grey system was an absolute phenomenon when it launched in 1995, arguably the first system to take a step toward making games socially acceptable and cool in mainstream eyes. Plus of course, it was the precursor to the PS2, scientifically deemed the greatest console ever.
"PlayStation has sold over 377 million hardware consoles across its product portfolio since 1995 and more than 2 billion software units around the world," boasts Sony. "In the U.S. alone the company has generated over $63 billion in revenue---the equivalent to 40% of the overall video game market share in the U.S to date."
To celebrate the anniversary, Sony has put together a number of freebies and deals, which you can get your filthy mitts on:
- Free PS3 and PSP downloadable static themes
- Weekly discounts on select PSOne Classics, found on the 15th anniversary store page
- 50% sale on Super Rub A Dub
- A PlayStation console ornament for PlayStation Home
Happy birthday, PlayStation!

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Both had a Grandia game on them. Both are awesome.
Happy birthday PS!!!
@ killias2 - Did you ever have one?
TRUTH.
MGS1, Xenogears, FF Tactics.
Point demolished.
Why are we talking about Dreamcast anyways? And when is the PS2's birthday?
I'll never regret trading in my n64 for a ps1.
15 years and you still make me smile everyday.
Thanks Sony.
X kisses x
Standing it up on it's side, using a pen on the tray to play import games... ah fond memories. I guess I was 11 too.
(Then again, I was busy playing Mario 64, Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie, etc. during the PSone era, so it isn't like I really missed out on too much fun.)
Didnt really get into the PS1 till MGS, then I battered that machine like no other.
You were the purveyor of videogame goodness back in the day and has never stopped giving, even in your third iteration of the Playstation console. You will always be and fondly remembered by gamers everywhere to be the system its competitors can never be. The best.
Here's half off a mediocre game to reel in sales we wouldn't otherwise get!
Seriously though, happy birthday Playstation, you've gotten me through many a rough night.
In in less important news, when the fuck will Sony give the American PSN some PS1 games worth playing besides FF. Seriously, Japan gets Ape Escape, Rakugaki Showtime, and Brave Fencer Musashi, while we get 10 year old Shovelware. Fucking Sony.
I'm on PSN right now and I see nothing.
Thanks for the laugh! Glad to see you're back!
I still prefer Sonys console to the Nintendo counterpart of that era. I'd say atleast that the PS1 had my favourite moments of any console generation, from playing Metal Gear Solid to the Resident Evils, Silent Hill, Twisted Metal and a bunch I can't remember.
Over on Nintendo I was playing Shadows Of The Empire, Mario64, Goldeneye....I eventually got one based solely on my love for Shadows Of The Empire. Oh and they're better selection of wrasslin' games.
Fair enough! I wasn't hating at all, I was just saying that 13-year-old Andy didn't seem to mind!
Happy Birthday PSone!!!!!!
Yeah I dunno why I responded to you specifically because I meant more to share my personal favs.
Maybe it was just the sight of your sexy name in this thread. What happened to the caps/spaces?
It was decided by the three or four votes I received that the spaces had to go :(
Forever to be known as "Randy". Wished I had known about the vote, I'd have definitely voted in favour of spaces.
When them Dreamcast games going digital Sony?
Or better yet: PS2 > PS1 > PSP > PS3 > Getting Shot > PSPGo
Also, I'm with gareth. If I'd had known about the name vote, I also would have gone towards spaces. Now, it's back to M. Randy. It makes you sound like an author. Write a book!
That's straight from the blog: http://blog.us.playstation.com/
I hope to see some more great games for sale. If I didn't already own the amazingness that is Suikoden I'd totally snatch it up for the 3 bucks.
"The PS1 was my first console. Wait, am I getting old?"
Ah-hahaha-hahaha-aaaaaa...

Ah SHIT!
