Sony celebrates PlayStation's 15-year anniversary photo

Today marks the fifteenth anniversary of the original PlayStation's launch in North America. The little grey system was an absolute phenomenon when it launched in 1995, arguably the first system to take a step toward making games socially acceptable and cool in mainstream eyes. Plus of course, it was the precursor to the PS2, scientifically deemed the greatest console ever.

"PlayStation has sold over 377 million hardware consoles across its product portfolio since 1995 and more than 2 billion software units around the world," boasts Sony. "In the U.S. alone the company has generated over $63 billion in revenue---the equivalent to 40% of the overall video game market share in the U.S to date."

To celebrate the anniversary, Sony has put together a number of freebies and deals, which you can get your filthy mitts on:

  • Free PS3 and PSP downloadable static themes
  • Weekly discounts on select PSOne Classics, found on the 15th anniversary store page
  • 50% sale on Super Rub A Dub
  • A PlayStation console ornament for PlayStation Home

Happy birthday, PlayStation!

Gwar. I read that real quick and somehow thought it said 50% off PSOne Classics. That would be something to get excited about.

Or, we can celebrate the Dreamcast's 11th birthday because it's 9/9/10.

Any word about about what PS1 games are gonna be on sale? I wouldn't mind having some PS1 era Final Fantasies (aka the best ones) on my PSP.

Thanks for the reminder about DC's Birthday. What a terrible time to lose mine - I HAVE to see if my launch unit actually still works after 11 years (I know it worked on its 10 year anniversary...)

How delightfully serendipitous, had to go and sort out all my old crap yesterday from when I moved out my parents 3 years ago and found my old PS1 and set it up here for some Front Mission 3 goodness.

Happy birthday PS!!!

@ killias2 - Did you ever have one?

The Dreamcast sucked dick in comparison.

TRUTH.

MGS1, Xenogears, FF Tactics.
Point demolished.

I already had my annual play-through of Metal Gear Solid, so I will celebrate the Dreamcast's 11th birthday today with some Chu Chu Rocket.
Why are we talking about Dreamcast anyways? And when is the PS2's birthday?

Wow, I was like 11 when my wonderful journey with Sony gaming began.

I'll never regret trading in my n64 for a ps1.

15 years and you still make me smile everyday.

Thanks Sony.

X kisses x

damn I have so many fond memories of my ps1. I got it at mother fuckin' launch back when it had "no gamez lol" Battle Arena Toshinden FTW!

Standing it up on it's side, using a pen on the tray to play import games... ah fond memories. I guess I was 11 too.

Guess I'd better check out the PSone store to see what I missed.

(Then again, I was busy playing Mario 64, Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie, etc. during the PSone era, so it isn't like I really missed out on too much fun.)

@ Neroisonfire - THATS HOW I HAVE TO BOOT FRONT MISSION 3 lol To be honest, the PS1 was my bros, I was an N64/Saturn owner.

Didnt really get into the PS1 till MGS, then I battered that machine like no other.

Happy Birthday PSone

You were the purveyor of videogame goodness back in the day and has never stopped giving, even in your third iteration of the Playstation console. You will always be and fondly remembered by gamers everywhere to be the system its competitors can never be. The best.

Sorry Jim, a further study refuted those claims. It was the Megadrive that was the greatest console ever. A lot of people are somehow not aware of this.

Happy Birthday Dreamcast.

In in less important news, when the fuck will Sony give the American PSN some PS1 games worth playing besides FF. Seriously, Japan gets Ape Escape, Rakugaki Showtime, and Brave Fencer Musashi, while we get 10 year old Shovelware. Fucking Sony.

I still prefer Sonys console to the Nintendo counterpart of that era. I'd say atleast that the PS1 had my favourite moments of any console generation, from playing Metal Gear Solid to the Resident Evils, Silent Hill, Twisted Metal and a bunch I can't remember.

Over on Nintendo I was playing Shadows Of The Empire, Mario64, Goldeneye....I eventually got one based solely on my love for Shadows Of The Empire. Oh and they're better selection of wrasslin' games.

I didn't get my PS1 until around 1999-2000. I was mainly an N64 player (Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64, and Smash Bros FTW!!!), but I had some good times with my PSX.

Well congrats PSone! Now that's a gaming system! PS1 > PS3.

Or better yet: PS2 > PS1 > PSP > PS3 > Getting Shot > PSPGo

Also, I'm with gareth. If I'd had known about the name vote, I also would have gone towards spaces. Now, it's back to M. Randy. It makes you sound like an author. Write a book!

That's straight from the blog: http://blog.us.playstation.com/

I hope to see some more great games for sale. If I didn't already own the amazingness that is Suikoden I'd totally snatch it up for the 3 bucks.

Although I didn't get my PSone 'til later (April '97; was a bit of a Nintendo fanboy 'til then), I've never regretted jumping over to the Sony camp. I got (& still have) so many good games for that system - RE 1 - 3, MGS, Pandamonium, Discworld, Vandal Hearts, Final Fantasy VII - IX & Tatics, Ehrgeiz, Ridge Racer Revolution, R4, Wild ARMs, Tekken 2 & 3, Street Fighter Alpha 1 - 3, SotN, Wing Commander 3 & 4... I could go on forever listing them all. The release of PSone reaffirmed my love of gaming & is arguably the point when gaming "grew up" & became "cool"/socially acceptable.
