Up until now, Sony has always had the "yeah, whatever" attitude when it came to sales figures, as their competition has been out-pacing them for about a year. Recently, holiday sales, advertising campaigns, and sales cuts have brought some solid sales numbers to Sony's camp, and they finally have some sales figures to be proud of. Maybe this is why Sony has taken issue with Microsoft's claims that the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 2-to-1 duing the week beginning November 18th.
Yesterday Microsoft claimed to have sold 310,000 consoles, proudly boasting that they sold twice as many next-gen consoles as Sony did during the holiday weekend rush. Not long after the news got out, Sony rep Kimberly Otzman blasted off an email to The Seattle Post-Intelligencer:
"It's (Sony Computer Entertainment America) policy not to disclose our unit sales numbers until NPD numbers are officially released which will be December 13th. However, I can assure you that Microsoft's estimates of our PS3 unit sales numbers are way off and they did not outsell PS3 2:1 during Black Friday week."
Who's lying here? Maybe no one is. Microsoft did originally state that the figures were based on retail estimates, but it will be interesting to see if they stick to their guns when the NPD numbers hit. We'll bring you more on this as it comes down the line.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Sony doesn't have any room to talk. Just shut the hell up and put out games!
Of course, we don't know if the reporter asked Sony for their comments on the situation or if it was sent blindly. Don't be mislead by the way it's presented, it doesn't necessarily mean that Sony just wanted to spout about MS being wrong, could just be an honest answer.
There's games out on the PS3 sure, but most know that the big hitters or exclusives were sub par to crap. Let alone most of the games out on the PS3 are already out on the 360 and you're still getting more stuff with the 360 than the PS3
either way though, I know for sure people weren't buying PS3s at the Best buy I was at. 360s sold like hotcakes and PS3's only moved because of some deal they had with the 40 gig only. (which still didn't move as much.)
When Sony stops acting stupid and trying to sucker buyers out of the "HD Experience" they keep pushing by making you buy the component cables seperate, maybe i'll look again before spending 500 or so on their system.
...oh Sony's throwing more BS about the 360 outselling them if I just happen to skip that small note.
@Dues Payne: Who? Sony or MS? They both have cock-strong PR departments, as is their job.
Among them are:
Work alongside developers with their own team to be readily available to help with any complications that arise during development - they're the experts, they should help.
Upgrade the Backwards Compatibility. At least allow PSX games to be rendered out in high definition resolutions - if an emulator can pull it off, I am quite sure the PS3 can handle it. The same goes for the PS2, but that's a bit more demanding.
Offer replacements on the controller to upgrade, even if it's a very small fee and I have to pay for shipping, it's better than having to buy an entirely new controller.
Show a humble face that doesn't have "I'm a Pompous Ass" written across the forehead. I am sure a lot of developers seeing such a change would give Sony a little more respect. Or at least I would.. Sacrificing the chances at making the PS3 into something huge over being an egotistical honorable ass is not worth it.
But, seriously. Why? What would they gain out of this except giving console fanboys, boners.
She's also about 13. So yeah, if you're into children I suppose she would be. Way to fail.
Also, "I'm better than you because your system only outsold us 1.89-to-1, duh!"
And furthermore: Sony here sounds almost as smug as the "I have 3 PS3's" guy. FTL.
Post it a few more times, see if it changes anything.
