Sony buys up Media Molecule

Sony buys up Media Molecule photo

Media Molecule, the makers of LittleBigPlanet, are now part of the PlayStation family. Sony Computer Entertainment has just announced that they've acquired the developer of the hit PS3 title. For those that would question why Sony would buy up a company that only made one game, the EU PlayStation Blog made a list of every award LittleBigPlanet has won. It's quite impressive when you see it all together.

Nothing really changes for the gamer, Sony says. They also state that the team has "exciting projects in the pipeline" that will be shared in the near future. LBP2? Surely. Hopefully they have something else in the works too.

I seriously hope they don't make LBP2. We don't need a disc based sequel, the DLC model (which still has new stuff being released consistently) is working great. I doubt they're making LBP2, hopefully it's something new, it will be cool to see a new IP come out of MM.

Also LBP just reached over 2,000,000 published user created levels. That's pretty amazing imo, sure they're mostly crap but some of them are better than anything the devs made.

Interesting they didn't do this sooner. I wonder if MM were looking at doing some work on Xbox or Wii or if it was just cheaper for Sony to bring them in-house than to keep fulling funding them as an external developer.

Good deal. They made a fun game, and I hope they make more. This should only help them out.

I wouldn't mind a LBP2, as long as they kept the game backwards-compatible with the original LBP user-generated levels.

This can only mean good things! And yeah, an lbp2 would be awesome, just as long as lbp1 content (clothing and all) was also useable in the sequel

I thought MS was the one that paid off or bought all the developers to make exclusives for their system.

sony has more 1st party developers then microsoft Renegade.
when microsoft buys a company, they move and merge them into one building to make whatever. that's part of the reason bungie got the hell out, the atmosphere was starting to kill them.

also, Peter Molyneax is thanked in the lbp credits for helping MM.

I don't think I'd buy a LBP2 unless it did something drastically new in comparison.

Add me to the list of people who want a new IP from these guys. Don't hold them down, iterating on their one franchise. That would be a mistake.

i agree with Qraze..Sony has more first party developers than 3rd party buyouts...

i think the deal with Sony was that they rather invest heavily on their first party developers as the same way as it has worked with Nintendo in the past, Nintendo was really taking a toll from back in the N64 and GameCube era and if it wasnt for their first party developers, in house Nintendo games, they wouldnt have survived to dominate this generation

and i think eversince PS1 era days Sony really never "technically" buy out third party developers (Capcom, Konami, etc..)..they just showcase what theyre system can do (technology, etc, etc..) and its up to the developers to be attracted to develop a game for Sony (Squaresoft developed FFVII, Konami had MGS, mainly attracted because of the capabilities of the system back then..)

while MS on the other hand buys out exclusives from third party developers, buy out a developers game if it becomes successful on their system and basically put on a chokehold on the developers until like what happened with Bungie, they cant breathe with the atmosphere and business ethics anymore and left their Halo franchise to MS to milk..the thing with this strategy is that it is good business wise, but it can put its toll on the creative aspects of things, imagine if you are forced to do another sequel after another without letting a chance to grow

MS's way is the lazy way imo they dont branch out and let other see the capabilities and talents of a developer beyond what they can do, lets face it these people are creative thats why they are in the business and for your passion to be subtracted like that is a pride swallowing siege..

Yeah, MS find a good game and just buy it. Sony buys and supports the whole developer.

MS finds ready made content and pays to have it slightly early.

Sony pays to have content made for them.

It's a whole different bsiness practice.

Difference between paying for favours and employing.

Media molecule already comfirmed they aren't working on lbp2. Lbp psp was ported by sony cambridge not MM. Guess relax we all know how much freedom sony allows its first party developers. They do not restrict their first party to sequel after sequel. I cannot wait for their next game.

Sony should buy some more developers it would be good for them.

When ever I hear about a possobly desent game I think I might get that then I hear its xbox exclusive. Damn another game ill just forget about cause I don't have a 360.

Oh well I find the ps3 exclusive better but there arnt as many though.

I doubt there'll be an LBP2. I remember reading somewhere that Mm don't want to split their player-base, and the downloads seem to be doing quite well. If they just make sure they keep releasing more level packs, I'll be happy. Similar to this "Episodic Format of Gaming" that was supposed to become big (Like Siren's Blood Curse) only done well, because with them you just wait until they're finished and buy the disc for half-price. ¬_¬
