Sony boss thinks 80GB PS3 isn't worth the effort photo

Fresh from the 'PR Lollercoaster' factory at Sony, the president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has gone ahead and said that the new 80GB PlayStation 3 won't hit European territories because, in his opinion, it's just not worth bringing here. An extra 20GB of hard drive isn't enough for the SCEE boss to bother giving the European market, a rather shocking attitude for a Sony boss to take.

"If you're going to double it, it's worth it. So maybe you'll see something a little bit later, but 60 and 80, really not much difference," Reeves said, essentially calling Sony out on a minimal upgrade in the face of Microsoft's 120GB Xbox 360 Elite. Whether that was his intention or not, his comments seem contradictory to his own company's efforts and he's practically rubbished the newest PlayStation 3 model. I don't know about you, but I'm left seriously questioning just what the Hell is going on over at Sony. It truly is its own worst enemy right now and the corporation doesn't seem to understand the concept of public perception on any level.

This isn't the first time SCEE has opened its big mouth and caused a PR nightmare. It was Sony's loose cannon European wing that kicked off the "price drop gate" scandal which caused internal -- as well as external -- confusion shortly after the company's E3 press conference. While that smacked of severe organizational problems and miscommunication within Sony's corporate structure, this just knocks the madness right out of the ballpark. I wonder what SCEA has to say about Reeve's claims that the SKU it intends to rely upon in the States has no value.

[Thanks to Joe Burling for the tip]

And now it's about time for the chorus of Sony fanboys to comment about how this is normal and everyone else does it and Sony's really not that bad. Hey, guess what? YOU'RE FUCKING NITWITS.

Seriously, I'm beginning to get angry with Sony. Could you please not be a bunch of imbecilic fuck-ups for just one month?! GAAAAH! The lack of professionalism is mind-boggling.

Sony does this to themselves. I can't believe a Sony spokesperson anywhere said the 80GB PS3 wasn't worth it. No wait, on second thought, this is Sony...

But at least the 80GB SKU won't get 3RLOD or Mass Effect or full backwards aaaaaaaaaaaaagh.....

This is all good material for seriose winly PR-advice books by Pachter in 2010 though. You know, when the Xbox1080x launches with super HD nextgen foot physics.

I'm kinda wondering why everyone thinks it's bad that someone at Sony told the damn truth for once. Would you rather have more hype? More spin? More lies? At least Reeves told it like it is.

Well... That 80GB is kind of a piece of crap... So I don't really mind not having it available.

The only reason Sony is doing this in the States is to stop producing Emotion Engines... Which we don't have over here anyway...

Ha ha! Love the photoshop job! As for the rest, pretty much par for the course. One day I will be able to justify my purchase of a PS3, but it won't be because of anything Sony does or says...

Remember reading about this a few days ago. What was said then was that since memory is so cheap in Europe the minimal upgrade just wouldn't make any sense for European consumers. Though I seriously doubt there is any substantial price difference.

Maybe the 60-80GB thing is easier to push in the US though. To me (living in Sweden) it just seemed like a bad joke. Doesn't everyone know that you can buy any hard drive and replace it yourself anyway?

@ TheDruid

The 60 to 80 GB was a consolation prize for the software emulation and the loss of 100% backwards compatibility, they aren't trying to improve the product for our sake. Probably just trying to keep us quiet.

The picture for this thread is... well... damn... I bet that burns...

And Sony... just sit in the corner silently and look pretty.

On the other hand... I wonder if Sony thinks "Hell, we're doing so well, lets give Nintendo and MS a head start and fuck ourselves a little..."
