It isn't really news to me that one of the higher ups at Sony don't cotton to anything that would potentially cut into console sales, but this is the Internet so somebody is bound to be startled by this display of common sense and tact just because it is being displayed by a member of the video game industry.

@handhelds4ever- My generalization was that most people would not be shocked by Jack Tretton's good sense.

....... yeah its amazing what companies will openly condemn and yet magically support at the same time. I am inclined to believe the worst until proven otherwise and this is no exception.
Am I going assume the worst and condemn Sony before they have the chance to actually screw up themselves, yes and no.... I am going to be watching them with far more scrutiny than I was previously. However until this Anti-Consumer DRM wetdream is actually a thing I'm not going to go grabbing my pitchfork and passing out torches.

I'm too cynical and jaded to believe that he's being genuine, rather than just trying to seem more likable than his competition. He's a CEO.

I'm sure he doesn't support hardware that blocks used games, but a software update that does sounds great!
The problem with blocking used games is that it also blocks game sharing. My friends and I trade games around all the time and, guess what? Many of the games I've borrowed I've liked and then bought new for myself. So this is a horrible idea that will drive consumers away.
If the new xbox dos not support used games and the ps4 would it is easy to predict who will sell the most units.

I totally agree! For example I first got Uncharted 1 as a 2nd hand game to give it a try and after that bought Uncharted 2 and 3 new when they came out. Without that first cheap incentive I probably never would have got to buy and play the sequels.

On one hand, this is good news for us if true. On the other, they might have a difficult time dealing with publishers like Ubi and EA, who might be less likely to develop for that particular system if the competition offers more security for their profits by blocking used games.
Although regardless of the outcome, it's refreshing to hear some genuinely good news and ideas coming from Sony. I'm starting to think they might not have their head completely up their ass after all.

@Dakilazical: absolutely! I just bought Radiant Historia when they re-released it after borrowing it from a friend and loving it. It's not the first time I've bought a game after trying out a friend's copy either.

Well. Maybe we should let them know THIS WILL EFFECT CONSOLE SALES. I love me some Xbox, but if the new one doesn't let me buy used, then thats an irreconcilable difference. - though it may hurt at first we'll have to go our separate ways.

I bought final fantasy 13 pre-owned today. it actually makes me sad that square enix and the development team will see no money from this purchase. I'm playing their game, but none of my money actually goes to them. this sucks. not from a greedy publisher perspective, but from the perspective that great games are getting snatched up on pre-owned and it doesn't benefit the people who make them thus pushing them to make more. I couldn't even buy it new because it isn't stocked anywhere round here.

of course if consoles did end up blocking used games, I'd probably end up pirating games instead. something I don't currently do because i am able to get games for affordable prices.

PS3 users don't pay for online play and it does cost to keep that sort of service running. Asking for very minor compensation when and if you chose to use the multiplayer is not unreasonable in this case. Microsoft on the other hand...

Well it didn't matter when David Jaffe said he didn't want an Online Pass in Twisted Metal, even though him and his team MADE that fucking game. If the board of executives thinks EA, even with their failing financials, is doing the "right" thing with Online Passes, it doesn't matter with Jack Trenton thinks. The Playstation 4 is not going to run used games.
And if the market doesn't change to adjust to that much like Steam did, I'm not going to buy a PS4 (or the next Xbox). I'll buy a gaming rig, a Vita, and an Android tablet, and that will be more than enough gaming for me. You can keep your anti-consumer bullshit.

With so many industry professionals stomping their feet and throwing themselves pity parties over the used game market, it's nice to see a guy so entrenched in the business side of things actually saying something different.
