We already knew that the PlayStation 3 network would allow users to download games and media, but what we didn't know was that it will offer original PlayStation games for download as well.
At this very moment, ten PS1 games are ready to be downloaded and they each cost JPY2000 in Japan, which is roughly $17 USD. But, because pricing in the U.S is generally different from the pricing in Japan, don't expect these games to cost $17 if they make it to the states.
This is the first batch of PS1 games available on the PS3 network in Japan:-
Arc the Lad
-Biohazard: Director's Cut Edition
-Bishi Bashi Special
-Jumping Flash!
-Konami Antiques MSX Collection Vol. 1
-Konami Antiques MSX Collection Vol. 2
-Hot Shots Golf 2
-Mr. Driller -Silent Bomber
-Tekken 2
When asked whether or not the games would be the same for the U.S. launch, our reliable source replied that, "Most are with a few add-ins that we can't release yet".
And when we asked if games such as Parrappa, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil and Armored Core would make it to the online network, we were told, "You know I can't say, but you're definitely on the same train."
This whole concept leaves me with two questions. First off, why would you buy a PlayStation game for that much when you could easily buy it for a cheaper price anywhere else? Secondly, if you own a hard copy of the game, why wouldn't you just use that instead of paying more money for the exact same game? The PS3 is backwards compatible after all.
Jordan Devore is Destructoid's PC gaming manager and founding ginger editor. He is said to be easy to love but difficult to know. When Samit inquired about his curious bio photo Jordan simply replied:
"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
To answer your two questions: 1) I dare you to find a hard copy of FF:VII for less than $100, much less $20 (a likely US price). And 2) well... you wouldn't. But not everyone had a PS1 and would still like to play Symphony of the Night. (That's the one I really want. I never got to play it on the PS1 and it too is pretty hard to find at a decent price.)
I'd also like to point out that FF7 wouldn't be available for a long time, and when this comes out the price for it would take a nosedive.
I would pay full retail price for a few PS2 games out there. That would make this worth our time and cash.

There's not a damn thing wrong with the companies giving the option to gamers who have long since retired their old systems, sold them to stores like gamestop and EB, and yet still wish they could go back and play the classics legitimately.
@JonDarkwood
God, I'm also sick of the "if you don't like it, don't buy it" defense. The point I was trying to illustrate is that Sony is doing EXACTLY what they said the wouldn't, offering up a bunch of classics through their online store. I don't have a problem with them offering the content, I'm just sick of their PR bullshit, ripping on someone for doing something, then doing the same thing themselves and acting like it's somehow different when they do it. My problem isn't with the PS3, it Sony's corporate BS artists. the fact is many will buy these classics because of a anemic launch line up, and Sony knows this. It's their stopgap to stem the flow of blood from their cost to get the PS3 to market, not saying MS isn't doing the same thing, but I don't like it when someone trys to hand me a turd and claims it's just "classic" food. Still looks like a turd to me.
Who here would want to pay 600 bucks for a system
to play ps1 games
honestly... do you want my ps1? too bad I don't have one... but if I did... i would send it to you
