Sony announces downloadable PS1 games for the PS3 online network and pricing! photo

We already knew that the PlayStation 3 network would allow users to download games and media, but what we didn't know was that it will offer original PlayStation games for download as well.

At this very moment, ten PS1 games are ready to be downloaded and they each cost JPY2000 in Japan, which is roughly $17 USD. But, because pricing in the U.S is generally different from the pricing in Japan, don't expect these games to cost $17 if they make it to the states.

This is the first batch of PS1 games available on the PS3 network in Japan:

-Arc the Lad
-Biohazard: Director's Cut Edition
-Bishi Bashi Special
-Jumping Flash!
-Konami Antiques MSX Collection Vol. 1
-Konami Antiques MSX Collection Vol. 2
-Hot Shots Golf 2
-Mr. Driller
-Silent Bomber
-Tekken 2

When asked whether or not the games would be the same for the U.S. launch, our reliable source replied that, "Most are with a few add-ins that we can't release yet".

And when we asked if games such as Parrappa, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil and Armored Core would make it to the online network, we were told, "You know I can't say, but you're definitely on the same train."

This whole concept leaves me with two questions. First off, why would you buy a PlayStation game for that much when you could easily buy it for a cheaper price anywhere else? Secondly, if you own a hard copy of the game, why wouldn't you just use that instead of paying more money for the exact same game? The PS3 is backwards compatible after all.

$17 for these old games? Is Sony fucking crazy? Considering i am gonna be able to buy 360 games in the next couple months for that cheap, why would i pay that much for an old PS1 game. That would be like Nintendo charging $17 for the N64 games when they are charging something closer to $10.

Really? You didn't know that? Yeah, they won't be playable on the PS3 itself in until next year though. You'll only be able to play them on your PSP at first.

To answer your two questions: 1) I dare you to find a hard copy of FF:VII for less than $100, much less $20 (a likely US price). And 2) well... you wouldn't. But not everyone had a PS1 and would still like to play Symphony of the Night. (That's the one I really want. I never got to play it on the PS1 and it too is pretty hard to find at a decent price.)

So Sony continues its game of keeping up with the Joneses.

I bought FF7 for $15 Canadian. This is a damn rip.

I'd also like to point out that FF7 wouldn't be available for a long time, and when this comes out the price for it would take a nosedive.

I wouldn't mind paying that much if it was something as hard to find as FF-VII, but old PS1 games shouldn’t cost more than $5. The fact that backwards compatibility is limited on the PS3 makes me wonder if this was intentional for a profit.

I would pay full retail price for a few PS2 games out there. That would make this worth our time and cash.

Aren't you supposed to be able to play those downloaded games on a psp? If that's the case then those games have a lot more value than only being able to play on the console. But I doubt the games are going to cost that much on the 17th we will know for sure. Man all this backward compatibility really makes me want to see a next gen play Sega Saturn games.

i can walk to EB Games or something and pick up FFVII for $20 easy. But it has nothing to do with how hard it is to find. They don't need to be charging that much, and people are fucking stupid if they pay for it.

You know, I thought that I'd already read somewhere that these games would be $5 each. If they're anything over $10, then I'd hafta say that it's a huge fucking rip-off.

God, how much longer will these companies spoon feed us their old (school) games. Haven't they made enough money off these games already. They could charge $5 a game and would still be making money hand over fist (what does that expression mean anyway?). Didn't Sony say they weren't gonna load up their online store with ports and classic games? They said they would have all this fresh new content, those games look pretty moldy to me.

some_dude if you don't want them then don't buy them and don't bother complaining. It isn't your money being spent to license the games and offer the services, so you're only being "spoon fed" if you decide to take them up on the offer.

There's not a damn thing wrong with the companies giving the option to gamers who have long since retired their old systems, sold them to stores like gamestop and EB, and yet still wish they could go back and play the classics legitimately.

@some_dude: It means you're putting the money into their open hand, usually because of the fist they're making with the other. It bears similarity to the expression 'highway robbery,' also pretty relevant here. In all honesty, though, having the games available is better than not. I just wish both Nintendo and Sony would release bigger libraries at cheaper prices. Even 5-10 buck prices seem a bit high - these seem more like 'macro' than 'micro'payments.

I don't have a problem with them being available, I have a problem with the price they are setting, and the fact that they are doing exactly what the ripped on M$ for, reselling old games.

@JonDarkwood

God, I'm also sick of the "if you don't like it, don't buy it" defense. The point I was trying to illustrate is that Sony is doing EXACTLY what they said the wouldn't, offering up a bunch of classics through their online store. I don't have a problem with them offering the content, I'm just sick of their PR bullshit, ripping on someone for doing something, then doing the same thing themselves and acting like it's somehow different when they do it. My problem isn't with the PS3, it Sony's corporate BS artists. the fact is many will buy these classics because of a anemic launch line up, and Sony knows this. It's their stopgap to stem the flow of blood from their cost to get the PS3 to market, not saying MS isn't doing the same thing, but I don't like it when someone trys to hand me a turd and claims it's just "classic" food. Still looks like a turd to me.

Yeah guys, I have heard that you can play these PS1 games on PSP, which would be cool. But yeah, those games are overpriced. Maybe if the sold a bundle of 4 or 5 PS1 games for that much -- like a series or something -- that would be a good deal. But otherwise, it looks like they just want to follow Microsoft's path. And btw, Microsoft has made shitloads of cash off of those arcade games they sell.
