Sony and Toshiba teaming up to make smaller processors for the PS3 photo

Sony and Toshiba will begin mass-producing 45 nm Cell processors in 2009. According to Engadget’s report, the smaller chips will cost less to manufacture than the current 65 nm builds and will consume 40 percent less power.

Of course, this news opens the possibility of yet another PS3 SKU, which is sure to tick off anyone who recently upgraded to the standard 80GB unit. The speculation is that these chips could be a precursor to a smaller, less warm PS3. Fortunately, I got over the whole “my console is too big” thing after lugging around an Xbox for a few years.

The one thing that has really disturbed me about this generation of consoles is the saturation of different models. It’s annoying to have to watch out for a new version every quarter. What do you guys think? Would you go after a slim PS3 if it came to fruition in 2009?

The PS3 had 13 or 14 revisions by the time the PS2 slim came out, but back then they never marketed new models (outside of the change to the slim).

sorry, meant the PS2 had 13 or 14 revisions, not the PS3

Works for me, I have yet to actually buy a next gen console. I've been using my friends' systems.

You know, GameTrailers just recently had a show about this, and what some experts said makes sense. We're in a game generation right now much less in need of stepping up the graphics. They are at the limit of what the human eye can distinguish anyway. You will see game consoles have much longer lifetimes than they did before, with different iterations coming every year with improved accessories, but the core console being the same.

PS3 development won't soak up everything it can do for a while, so it makes sense that they improve what they can on it while keeping the core that companies develop for the same. Remember that the PS1 had some 19 different SKUs in its lifetime; this time they're just making the SKUs way more public, and adding changes visible to consumers.

I wouldn't rebuy a PS3 just to get a 45nm processor or a cooler, more energy efficient system, but if I were buying one for the first time I might be tempted to wait for this one.

This is why I am not a PC gamer, I like having one console that I don't have to upgrade for every new game that comes out. I don't want my brand new PS3 to be a lesser version in a month.

i agree with bhive01

if this allows for a cheaper console, which is a big selling point for many who haven't bought a next gen console, this could be helpful, or allowing for more USB slots, wireless capabilities, and backwards compatibility that is missing from some models of the ps3.

New processor's are nice, but buying a model a few months before a major revision is a pain in the a$$.

I'll stick to my 60 gig model.

(unless the slim version has backwards compatability and is 199.99. Who could resist that?)

if its a slim version I'll have to buy a ps3 (was planning to anyway) if not I'll just ebay a 60gb ps3 with backwards compatability.

I rememeber wondering how many components would change over the 10 year life cycle.

I'm with bhive01 on this one as well.

I'm happy with my sexy beast.

Bring back backwards compatibility!

(I'm buying a 60 GB version off of eBay and I have no interest in a slim model if it doesn't have the same features as the 60 GB.)

so if they make the ps3 smaller does that mean my 60gb og is going to be super rare now?

i like being an early adopter.

It'd have to be slim and freakin sweet looking like the slim ps2 was for me to consider buying it. I already own the damned thing but I'm a sucker for the neater, smaller console look. Worked on me with the PS2, may work on me with the PS3... maybe. He'll I wanted to buy that redesigned NES back in the day even though I didn't have a reason. I'm a sick puppy. :(

Will the new model have new features? No? OK, then it's just a coolness and efficiency factor, not a necessity.

All you people trying to find parallels between the PC industry and the console industry can go home, now.

I would go for a slim next year so that I could more easily carry it to work, that way my wife can play her stuff at home. But it would be hard for me to fork over more than $300 for a second ps3.

i personally would not. Bought my orginal 60 gig and although it is big its worked flawlessly and without problems so i'd have to win the lottery to make buying another a worthwhile venture.

@face multiple skus has nothing to do with the proposed 10 year lifecycle as it is still essentially the same system. Any games that have come out for ps3 since launch work on all skus obviously.
