Despite PR spin after PR spin, Sony will most likely want to include rumble functionality in the SIXAXIS for the PlayStation 3. The first step toward that reality just happened as Sony and Immersion finally settled their differences. From the press release covering the announcement:
Immersion Corporation, a leading developer and licensor of touch feedback technology, and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) today announced the companies have agreed to conclude their patent litigation at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and have entered into a new business agreement to explore the inclusion of Immersion technology in PlayStation format products.
"We are pleased to have put this litigation behind us," said Immersion CEO Victor Viegas. "Our new business agreement with Sony Computer Entertainment is specifically intended to enable advanced vibration capability for the benefit of the PlayStation gaming community. We are happy to provide our technology in this regard and hope to make technical proposals very soon with respect to use of our technology in the PlayStation products."
Now that Sony can perhaps have the green light to do so, do you want rumble in your SIXAXIS or are you pleased as a peach to not have it? We already know Sony's answer. Let's see how long it takes them to take that back.
Full press release after the jump.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
ps3 is a copycat... a late copycat
Wasn't Phil Harrison saying they don't want to confuse their customers? he was talking about the multiple packages of the 360, but you think it would extend to an overall concept. This news confused me.
I think the new site banner supports Crecente plenty.
I own a PS3, love it...not a fanboy
I hope that if they do add rumble that no game requires it to play ex: Metal Gear...as then I would have to go out and buy a new controller as I am happy without rumble as when I get into a game I rarely pay attention to my hand vibrating...or the phone ringing.....
Actually thats not true. Most 360 owners (except for the fanboys that exist for every console), like myself, don't WANT bad things to happen to the PS3. (knowing i might pick one up in the future) However, if sony does something stupid, its hard not to point and laugh.
If you don't like destructoid you don't have to come here and troll the fuck out of any PS3 or 360 related story.
@ CaffeinePowered
Assuming you've already bought the system, which consist of people who likely could care less about rumble if they're so dependent on eating whatever Sony feeds them. I kid, I kid. Kind of.
@xmetninjax
People have an issue with motion sensing at the expense of rumble, not with motion sensing in addition to rumble (like the Wii).
Enough of my wish list. Hopefully this upcoming month will improve the PS3 otherwise it will continue to collect dust and possibly get sold on eBay, if I can sell it.
Funny how these Sony supporters that arrived here recently are shouting that where all Xbox fanboys. FYI I've never owned a Xbox and it's a big question mark or I ever will, I have the first two playstations. The third one..dunno about that, we just have to see what the future brings. Fucking tool.
By the way. Pagers. Who the fuck uses pagers anymore?
Rumble means you are using three of your senses instead of just two. It definitely adds to the game.
Good luck finding a Colossus without rumble.
Driving a car with an analog stick isn't realistic either, guess that's why they call it a game.
Well, that'd be a good retort, if it wasn't for the fact that the whole point of the rumble feature is to make it feel more like you're actually in the game, also known as realism. Dick.
What has a doctor done for me lately?
Nothing!
(On account of no health insurance)
And I really need to stop double posting.
but whats up watup?, you are the only fanboy here,
everyone here is just into games but are pissed off with
sony on going promises/lies.
Rumble isn't really all that important to me, but just the thought that it's THERE doesn't hurt any.
Although I do recall one of the PR reasons for not including rumble was that it would make the controller heavier, making it more difficult to move the controller and use it's motion features.
Unlike the Wii-mote, which only needs one hand to move, the sixaxis requires both hands, and more weight would just put more strain on your wrists...
Whatever. Still good news.
If it's something your gamers have grown used to why get rid of it?
