Sony already talking to devs about the next PlayStation photo

I remember arguing with my co-workers about those (fake) PS4 videos that we saw last month. People were becoming quite heated about how it's "too soon" to be talking about the next PlayStation console. I assured them that it was not. I insisted that they have to be working on a PS4 now, regardless of whether those videos were real or not.

It seems like they're working on something. Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida is already talking new console in a recent interview with Develop. They are "undergoing many activities that we haven't yet been talking about in public. Some future platform related activities."

"When Ken Kutaragi moved on and Kaz Hirai became the new president of SCE, the first thing Kaz said was, 'get Worldwide Studios in on hardware development'," Yoshida said. "So he wanted developers in meetings at the very beginning of concepting new hardware, and he demanded SCE people talk to us [developers]."

Doing their homework and actually including what developers want in the next Sony console is a very smart move. An "easier" PS4 or PSP2 would be good for everyone.

I'm pretty sure they've been 'working' on the PS4 since before the PS3 was released, same for Microsoft and Nintendo.

It is certainly not "too soon" to be talking about a PS4, we are about 4 years into this cycle (I think), time for some badass new hardware if you ask me.

Anyone have any ideas of what are going to be the defining features of the next-gen consoles? Well lets stay on topic. The defining features for the PS4? 3D is pretty much a given. But as for anything else.... what is it gonna be? I really hope they don't push to virtual titles only. I mean the idea would be awesome but I really like having a hard-copy of a game. The option would be nice, but I hope it is not forced on us.

Ideas guys?

talks would just be the concept stage... by the time they get around to release we may well be looking at close to a 10 year cycle for the PS3 anyway.

Sony will still continue to support PS3 even when PS4 comes out, and in all honesty i thin its about time we start talking about next gen for consoles. If sony Gets teh pricing right and start at 300-350 dollars at launch I think we have another Sony powerhouse selling machin like PS2 was. Retailed at first for 300 dollars, sold really really well. I'm Sure Sony will be smarter with PS4 next gen, Blu-ray is already the standard for HD movie entertainment, and I have heard about Microsfot and Sony going for an intel solution for their CPU's next gen which will be great.

With iD already telling console and PC guys to...uhhh, "Step Your Game Up", because iD Tech 6 can't be done on these puny machines, you gotta wonder how close we are to the next generation.

Nintendo already said their next home console would be 3D ready, which means they're anticipating the consumer market to be more 3D friendly sometime later. Matter of time then?

Sounds to me less like a PlayStation 4 "confirmation/announcement" and more like acknowledging the problem that they have made balls-hard platforms to develop for in comparison to the competitor's platforms.

If the mod scene has proven anything, the easier you make the SDK to work with, the more people are going to work with it, the higher chance you'll see some really good stuff come out. No different here, if you can spend less time just figuring out how to make the tech work, you can spend more time making the game.

From what it sounds like it's meetings with the devs to see what they want out of the next console. One of the biggest things I remember about the ps3 was that it's hard to develop a game for compared to the 360. So getting devs involved this early sounds like a great idea to fix that problem.

I just hope everything doesn't turn into a 3D shit storm. Gimmick or not, I am sure 3D is going to be around for awhile. I can also see the appeal of games in 3D. However I have come to learn from watching 3D movies that sometimes my eyes just can't keep up. It is like you have to use extra muscles to view 3D for long. All I am saying is that as awesome as 3D can be, I hope everything doesn't turn 3D.

I am all for anything new in the next-gen of consoles even if I don't like it. However I like having choice and options. If I am being pushed into something I don't want then that is when you lose a customer.

I hope no new hardware comes out for another 6 years at the least. I'm hoping devs just get used to the PS3 like they did the PS2 era. I guess nothing will ever be as good as the PS2 years though. If new hardware comes out anytime soon I will look back at the software produced with a large grimace.

I hate reading articles about the PS4. And that's because I only bought my PS3 a few months ago and want it to stick around for at least 3 more years to make me feel like it wasn't a wasted purchase. No, I think we've still got 2 or 3 more years left on the PS3. I think Move and 3D have delayed it that much time.

*cue people STILL misinterpreting the PS3's "ten year cycle"*

They mean ten years of SUPPORT, not ten years until the next console. What's so fucking hard to understand? They did the same for both the PS1 and PS2.

Anyway, I'd say 2012 or 2013 for the PS4. R&D takes time, people.

Next time you are talking to them on the topic ask this: How long do they think it takes to come up with a new console? A day? A week? A month? Then, throw in some lengthy tale which is summed by pointing out someone being delusional and some connection with them. Epic lulz.

What I want in the PS4:
Less awesome hardware that can be made cheaper
Robust online experience
More ergonomic controller with less buttons and only two top buttons
No motion-control in standard controller
Some sort of memory card that can plug into the controller and download games that are playable on the portable memory card that can then add back onto your existing games on the console.
Smaller, cute system that doesn't make much noise, preferably white

That would be the perfect system.

Obviously it's not too soon for them to be talking about it internally as something they are developing. They were probably talking about it well before they even launched the PS3. It is however way, way too early for them to be talking about it as a product that they are going to be releasing. This generation is taking longer to get to the maximum capabilities of the consoles, especially the PS3, and luckily almost no one is in a hurry to move on. I'd certainly be upset if they released PS4 before 2013 and I wouldn't really mind if that date were more like 2015.

Some people just go totally overboard when they hear people talking about the next Playstation or Xbox already. As other people have mentioned already there's no reason for panic. It wouldn't be at all out of the ordinary for developers to have specs, and partially developed hardware kits (I can't remember the proper name for the things, but a friend who works in gaming has mentioned what they're called before) in their hands by now.

No, they don't.

You make the assumption a PS4 will one day be released, and if that held, then yes, a PS4 is being worked on.

I do not believe a PS4 will one day be released, and thus, I am very surprised to hear talk of a PS4 being worked on. Maybe a PSP2, but I look at the PS3, and find myself surprised that Sony's gaming division hasn't been dismantelled yet.

The introduction of OnLive may extend this gen as the Big Three take a wait and see approach to determine whether or not to include a similar service on their next-gen devices.

That said, I'm ready for some next gen rumors.

I still don't have a PS3, my 360 and Wii offer more than I have time to play.

I hope one of the Big Three has an announcement at E3 next year, even if it's a year or two away.

I've had my 360 for almost five years now, it's time to start talking next gen.

@ Genius - That... doesn't make any sense.

Nintendo has always been a profittable company even during the gamecube era, and Sony lost more with the PS3 than they gained with the PS1 and PS2 combined.

I don't know what buisness school you went to, but most the people I know seem to think a company shouldn't entangle itself in enterprises that put it into billions of dollars of debt.

Just some predictions:

1) The controller will look the same.
2) It will use a new format that is incredibly expensive.
3) It will require a 3D HD TV.
4) It won't play PS3 games.
5) It will be so powerful that it takes 4+ years just to hit it's stride.

Actually large companies do that all the time. It's called a "loss leader." Granted Sony surely didn't want to lose money on the PS3 hardware for as long as they did, but they're a big company prepared to take a short term loss that will be covered by profits made over the long term. Even if they only sell half as many PS3's as they do PS3's that's still another 35 Mil units they'll make a profit on. Then there's the slew of other products they already make money on.

Another PS4 article, another slew of tards misinterpreting the PS3's "ten year cycle. PS3 was launched in 2006, and will continue to be supported until 2016 at least, now that doesn't mean a PS4 can't come between now and then, I'd imagine we're looking at about 2012/2013, and after such an awesome experience with the PS3, I cannot fucking wait!!!

@Hcapt - you sir are an idiot if you think Sony's gaming division is going ANYWHERE anytime soon because they lost money on consoles for a few years. THAT'S HOW THE GAMING INDUSTRY WORKS! Lose on hardware, make bigtime on software. Always has until nintendo announced day one profit planned on the 3DS.

Whoever said MS will absorb Sony's gaming division - have you ever done stand-up? You're a funny guy!

Do not forget people, across the globe there are MORE people playing WORKING PS3's than there are people playing working 360's.

I would be stoked if Sony just decided with the PS4, "you know what, Fuck America, we'll sell this to rest of the World and they can just keep their fucking Xboxes" i mean it's the ONLY place in the World where Sony are treated like 2nd best as far as real console gaming goes (not including the toy market buying up the wii)

Quite understandable as hardware development is an arduous process. Though I wish they'd keep things under wraps first to prevent people from thinking they are so ready to do away with the current gen when there's still much value to tap into (not to mention them declaring a ten-year plan).

I don't doubt the continued existence of the PS3, but frankly, Sony should not make a PS4.

They lost 5 billion dollars on the PS3. To put that into perspective, the PlayStation 3 was the most expensive failure in the history of gaming, about 5X more expensive than the RRoD fiasco, ate through over half of Sony's retained earnings and is 2 billion dollars more than the entire net profit they gained from the PS2. It is simply impossible to make that money back on the PS3, even if it started selling better than the Wii. The PlayStation 3 model of business is completely unsustainable in the long term, and is unacceptable in any corporation.

Investors aren't stupid, but it would be stupid to invest in the company that makes the PS4 after having made the PS3, as an investor is fully aware that the PS3 can never achieve a net profit in it's lifetime. I'd be surprised if Sony could get a PS4 through it's investors.

@Hcapt - lol at your bunch of crap. Those losses are for the whole computer hardware division, your research should include reading articles instead of just repeating headlines.

PS3 itself lost $3B and change which is a lot less than what XBox bled from Microsoft. On the other hand PS3 probably helped cement the win for BD as the high-def video disc, and Sony makes a lot of money from owning the rights to media formats like that.

What I want from PS4 - quieter, faster disc reads, way higher specs obviously... like 4 Cell processors and a mind-blowing graphics card... compatible with PS3 peripherals, emulator software for PS 1-3 and Portable.

Here's hoping this time they:

1 put out a system that's affordable for the masses on day 1
2 it releases before or at least at the same time as MS's and Nintendo's next console
3 it's not so "difficult" to develop for
4 it has some kind of clear edge on the competition

I feel like the PS3 is going strong now that it's hit its stride. A PS4 wouldn't have to expand too much on the existing hardware. I'm no tech wiz or anything, but it seems like something as simple as a much stronger GPU taking some of the strain off the cell processor could make a world of difference. Not to mention what a stronger cell or a dual cell or a quad cell could do. I'd guess blu-ray is still going to be a viable format for the next gen and with the prevalence of digital distribution and the low cost of digital storage I'll bet we'll be seeing systems with 1tb+ internal memory.

"4 years is the new ten?"

*exasperated sigh*

Again, the "ten year cycle" includes the time when the PS4 is out and Sony is still supporting the PS3. The PS3 came out in 2006, Persona 4 was released on the PS2in 2008. Like that. The PS3 will have been out six or seven years by the time the PS4 comes out, then Sony supports the PS3 for 3-4 more years after that. BOOM, 10 years.

I'm not even a huge Sony fan, but fucking hell, use your brains. This little thing called "logic" is lost on the majority of gamers. It's really quite frightening...

The PS3's and Xbox 360's graphics already look gorgeous in 1080p. A new system may have a generous bump in system specs, but they're really going to need something mind blowing to get people to shell out another $400-$500 for a new system when they're happy with their current ones. Other than 3D TV (which seems like a gimmick to me), what else is there that the current gen can't do?

Very excited for the next generation of consoles, I feel like the switch from SD to HD was the console leap and like this time Sony and Microsoft are going to bring some serious graphical improvements. As for Nintendo, I predict they will be the first on the market with notably better graphical capabilities than the PS3 and 360, and some major innovation to get attention of the masses once again.
