Sony admits to PS3 price drop; 80GB PS3 coming to America in August (update) photo

To the surprise of virtually no one, Sony comes clean and shows their hand early. That's right boys and girls, the 60GB PS3 is dropping to $499.99 tomorrow (Monday). Not only that, but that special Korean edition of the 80GB PS3 is making it's way stateside as well. It will retail for $599.99 and come packaged with MotorStorm.

So wait, doesn't that mean Sony lied to us?! Well yes, but only because they wanted to announce it at E3 no doubt. Unfortunately for them, various video game retailers like Target were already dropping the price ahead of schedule so Sony had to finally confirm the news.

What are your thoughts on this? Are you finally going to go buy a PS3 now? Or is it still to pricey to you with the drought of games at the moment?

Hit the jump for the AP press release.

[Update: Added an image of 80GB PS3 packaging in all of its glory.]

Sony Corp. announced a revised PlayStation 3 console Monday with a bigger hard drive for storing downloaded content such as video games and high-definition movies.

The new $599 PS3 increases the system's storage capacity from 60 to 80 gigabytes and also includes a retail copy of the online racing title ``MotorStorm,'' a company spokesman said.

Starting Monday, the current 60 gigabyte model will cost $499 _ a $100 price drop.

The larger capacity machine won't be available in the United States and Canada until August.

It plays into the company's upcoming strategy of eventually offering downloaded high-definition movies, video games, movie trailers and demos, Sony spokesman David Karraker said.

Karraker said further details on high-def movies for download would be released at a later date.

The announcement comes two days before the E3 Media & Business Summit in Santa Monica, Calif., where dozens of industry heavyweights including Sony rivals Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co. are expected to show off their latest games and related products.

In April, Microsoft began selling a version of its Xbox 360 with a 120-gigabyte hard drive and a souped up high-definition video connection. Called Xbox 360 Elite, the black-colored system sells for $479.99.

Xbox gamers who already own the $399.99 20-gigabyte model can buy a snap-on 120-gigabyte hard drive for $179.99.

Karraker said Sony would use the E3 show to focus on two areas: ways to increase the number of consumers who own PS3s and other products such as the PlayStation Portable handheld system, and expanding the system's library of available games.

He said Sony would be releasing 100 new video games during the current fiscal year, including 15 titles that are exclusive to the PS3 such as the hack-and-slash action title ``Heavenly Sword.''

Microsoft is mucking with the format war? huh.

I was under the impression Toshiba did everything it could to get a unified format, and Sony said "no, we want all the candy to ourself and we'll even make it a non-choice for consumers" by jamming it in the PS3 for $600

Microsoft on the other hand could give a shit, they could easily make a bluray add-on, and left the choice up to the consumer ultimately.

And yes, digital distrobution is the future, and Micrsoft seems to be doing just fine, to quote you deiga.

The big rub with the home video market is that at its core, the film studios don't like it. The goal is to get people to pay every time that they view a movie... thats how shit like Divx came about. Same sort of greed that has people having to choose between two high def formats at the moment. Movies arent like PCs or game consoles, people don't want to worry about compatibility, they just want to zone out to a movie.

Toshibas HD players are a compelling buy right now, as is the HD addon for the 360, I cant bring myself to buy a game console that promises future games sometime maybe in order to watch movies... but I dont want to get burned buying a format that dies later. I've allready got a Sony minidisc player, after all.

I dont know that the PS3 is hurting bluray, I would think that given the lack of games for the system currently most owners have bought a movie or three to have something to do with the thing besides fold. In that sense, its a success for sony. Way to get your foot in the format door (for once).

It will be interesting to see what happens when wal-mart does their HD DVD push. Regardless of what you think of them (everything thats wrong with corporate america), a metric shitload of people shop there... and ask a musician what not getting their CD carried at the local wal-mart means to their sales. If the sheep start buying up HD DVD, it dosnt matter what tech pundits and gurus see in their crystal balls.

Of course, none of this matters when high definition sets still arent in a majority of homes. The next couple of years will change that most likely as you'll start to be able to find more sub-$1000 sets. As for now, this is just an argument among *philes and wireheads, I dont think either format will see mass adoption until more HD sets get into the hands of the pinks.

There are times when HD sucks, too. If any of you watch CSI in HD, you get to see every crag and chasm in Marg Halgenbergers neck. Seriously, her head looks like it should be hanging on the door of a hut in Africa.

First, this story's Photoshop gets my approval.

Secondly...60gb versus 80gb? What is with consoles and tiny, tiny hard drives? As far as I know the PS3 uses standard sized hard drives, so there is no excuse for this 60gb/80gb stuff. I doubt you'd find such small hard discs in the cheapest PCs on the market.

A good move, and hopefully not too late. It still doesn't solve the problem of little to no system selling games to go with it, but a price drop is great news and about time.

Good move, but still far away from compiting with microsoft for the 400 dollars point. Also, a 80gb drive is worth 100 uds more than the 60gb version?

Still too expensive, at this point i would have hold the price for a little longer and wait for some games to come out, then drop the price.

And microsoft is not doing things right yet. They have a system full of games, but a system that fails 33% of times (im not buying one for that reason). They need to redesign the console, get the technical problems out of the way and then call for a price cut.

This whole story reminds me of when my friend found his roommate's "genital warts" cream. He at first was like, "hey, so....you got warts on your stuff?" and the other guy denied it. A couple of days later he just flat out admitted it. Just like Sony. SCEA has publicity genital warts.

I just read a 30 minute old CNN article about this, and the only positive that a sony rep touted was the low failure rate. Not that thats bad in light of the 360's killing puppies, but it just seems that Sony is becoming more and more of a cornered animal. Plus I'm a little surprised to learn that Motorstorm has sold over a million copies. The games pretty cool, but the lack of local (drunken) multiplayer and rumble absolutely tarnishes that game. I didn't even know there were a million PS3's, but I'm glad to report that between me and roommates hard-fought work regiment, we have managed to fold 16 proteins.

Nice to see the price starting to come down, but I just don't see the point in the 80GB package. It's really just a way for Sony to not lose as much money. They would much rather you buy the 80GB, think about it. Chances are they are paying less for the 80GB HDD than the 60GB, otherwise why bother with a 20GB bump when your competition has a 100GB bump for $80. Lets say they are saving $10 a drive w/ the 80GB, pack in a game that costs Sony $10-20 a disc at this point (if that) and they lose $70-80 less per package. At this point that $80 might even be profit.

Drop another $100 off the 60GB and I'll think about it Sony. Oh, you might wanna drop some killer exclusives at E3, might help a little. K Thanx!

The 60 to 80GB seems completely unnecessary, considering the sony network. Granted, its very young, but that also serves as a great detriment to it. Xbox Live has been around for half a decade and has the infrastructure and experience to make it as fucking amazing as it is now. I don't see anything about the PS3 that necessitates the need for an extra 20 gigs. That measly amount made my 360 more than adequate for a year and a half, and the PS3 has no indication of being nearly as necessary in the on-line market. You have to go into a PS3 title to go online, and that seems a little behind the times.

Is this the fastest price drop in history?

Sony is run by such fuckers. They should give a rebate to all those poor bastards that paid $599 for the 60GB 9and waited out in the rain).

One step forward for wanting to get a PS3, but also two steps back in my opinion of Sony.

I may never get a PS3. I haven't liked a Final Fantasy game since IX, and Metal Gear isn't my thing. And I have never paid more that $250 for a video game console. I see no reason to change that.

The only thing I know of that draws me to the PS3 is something by the Ico team, and that hasn't even been announced yet.

And I guess if Blu Ray ever takes over, I'll get one.

But other than that, the PS3 is a 3DO to me. I can pleasantly watch it come and go with little or no interest in being involved.

@ Tron

I completely agree with your ICO Team comment. My roommate and I just spent every spare "not on set" and "not illustrating" moment playing Ninja Gaiden, and boy does that game actually suck. I would have killed for a full graphical reinvisioning of Shadow of the Colossus. Now that would be a real reason to own a PS3.

@ riser glen

I'm glad that we mutually beat eachother, its like the end of Rocky II.

this is pretty simple .. most people dont follow gaming news the way we do .. most people will see that the ps3 dropped 100 dollars and buy one .. most people will see the 599 version as a minor upgrade with a bonus which it is .. 6 - 8 months sony rinses and repeats once all the 60GB models are gone.

this is a good move but only the numbers will tell the tale

As great of scenario as that would be, the fact is blatantly clear that it still costs 500 dollars. This doesn't affect me since I bought one just to watch "Rescue Me" in HD, which was well fucking worth it. But it still costs half a grand. I've already said several times that I hope it does well, simply for the idea of competition leading to innovation, but they're in a big hole. It will take time and time alone for them to come back.

And if someone takes my innovation comment as a justification of the Wii, I will literally walk downstairs and break my copy of Wii Resident Evil in half. That system is underpowered, underdeveloped (considering how bad the controls actually are), and has actually emerged as a big problem for those of us who were already disenchanted with the slow development of original games. It doesn't matter that I can physically flip a pancake on the Wii, what matter is that we're even going to get less innovation as that shitpile system keeps selling.

Seriously, read what dvddesign posted. It was a real eye-opener for me and how I feel about Toshiba.

Toshiba pushed for a unified format because the last time they did that (DVD) they got the largest piece of the pie. If I was Sony, I would have fought against that too.

if they had kept their smaller 20gig version and dropped the price by $100 to 400, they'd have otentially overcame one of the greatest complaints of the PS3 and matched the price of their competitor the 360, i broke the piggy bank just buying a 360, forget about a $500 machine its just too expensive

how is this not exactly like having a 20gb and 60gb PS3 out at the same time? who the hell wants to settle and get the inferior model? now that the 80gb is coming out, the 60gb will just be phased out, too. i can't wait for sony's announcement at e3. "we will be rolling out the 100gb model in 2008 for $599, and dropping the 80gb model to $499. sorry, but we felt that people will want that extra 20gb of space."

Quite honestly, the 80gig is a ripoff for the idiots.

I'd much rather have gotten the 20gig, but since that's out, I'll be getting the 60gig one, then using the extra $100 to buy a 250gig notebook hard drive, and shoving that in.

As to what dvddesign posted, it was a really great editorial piece, and I'm much happier now that I'm on the "winning" side, considering the people on that site are very good at what they do. I just picked up Planet Earth - The Complete Series on Blu-ray, and let me tell you, it is fucking fantastic — and that's only on my 26" Samsung LCD in 1080i. I can't imagine how awesome it'd look on, say, a 46" 1080p LCD or something.

Honestly all this makes me want to do is wait until the 80gb version drops to $499. The PS3 STILL doesn't have enough great games I'd buy one, even with the Blu-Ray looking to be the winner in this next-gen war. (I was gunning for HD-DVD just because it was the underdog)

While it's a good move I think everyone would be pissed they lied about having no intention to drop the price. We all knew this was coming even BEFORE the launch...

Another strange decision by Sony.

I don't know about you guys, but Sony and Microsoft have been driving me nuts with offering different home console versions. Microsoft's was bad in less than two year's time, but Sony takes the cake and doing it all in less than a year. Offering the consumer more options is understandable, but this is just ridiculous since its all just comes back to bite them in the ass.

The thing that concerns me about Sony is their lack of trust and respect they are losing by all of their ridiculous statements and fallacies concerning their company and system. With a price drop so soon from launch how do you think all the people who bought the first shipment feel now? What is the motivation behind picking one up now when they will just probably have another price drop a few months down the road. And, @Buck, I will for sure never own a PS3, Sony is burning too many bridges and they need to right the ship from it's current 180 course.
