Sony 'actively thinking' about PSN charges photo

It's time for the old "PSN charges" debate to rear its ugly head. The last time we left off, it became pretty clear that Sony was strongly considering a premium service on the PlayStation Network, something that would offer paying customers a little extra over the current free package. Now, Sony has outright stated that charges are being considered.

"It's been our philosophy not to charge for it from launch up until now, but Kaz recently went on the record as saying that's something we're looking at," says Sony's Peter Dille. "I can confirm that as well. That's something that we're actively thinking about. What's the best way to approach that if we were to do that? You know, no announcements at this point in time, but it's something we're thinking about."

At this stage, I'd say it's an inevitability. I said years ago that Sony would charge for PSN as soon as it felt it could do so, and here we are. Of course, the gaming side should always be free, and Sony has said so itself. We'll just have to sit tight and see what Sony believes our money should get us.

End Bosses: Sony's Peter Dille [IGN]

They should just announce what they're going to do/change, so people can stop arguing about what is/isn't going to happen, and instead can start arguing about why Sony's decision makes the company awesome/shit.

Looking back at the charts with premium features, I'm all in for it. As long as the base package is free, I would gladly pay monthly for access to all PS1 games. And such.

I can understand paying for additional features, but they better be badass to warrant a subscription.

But if they charge for the core things we have now for free, they might just lose a customer.

This is obviously gonna alienate a lot of people but it is absolutely necessary to the survival of the online platform, it costs so much freaking money to host all those bloody things. It really should have never been free to begin with.

They'll at least have to throw in their "digital magazine" they already charge for.

If Sony keeps head to head free and revamps options 2 off that survey they had a while back. I would be down to give them bread.

Free PS1, mini's themes, cloud storage, etc...all great.

here is hoping though they don't charge for XGC. At least give one on one free and you can make group part of the paid package.

They should just stick with the "premium service" idea and make the incentive to pay very high. If I'm correct, Microsoft has been dragging its feet on pc mmo ports (Champions Online, LotRO, etc) and a premium plan could help acquire some games. If Sony plans on charging monthly fees for The Agency and DC Universe, then it would help with that too.

As long as the basics stay free, I'll pay for lots of extras. It's like getting Blu-ray from Netflix; it costs me extra, but it's an additional thing I'm paying for because I want it and not because I need it to avoid being treated like a second class citizen.

Besides, the proposed subscription benefits were well above any sort of regular online features. Automatic inclusion in game betas, store discounts, playing the first hour of retail games for free and unlimited access to PS1 and PSN games? Give me online play and cross game chat for free and I'll gladly pay for all the awesome extra stuff.

I don't see PS1 classics, minis or anything from the PSN store being included with this premium bit, aside from mabe that magazine, which essentially costs them nothing to produce. Any actual games being included would leave developers and the like without a source of revenue. The reason these things cost money in the first place, which is why XBL isn't giving unlimited access to arcade games or anything. It's a great feature, but one that would ultimately fuck the company over. Imagine the thousands of dollars they would lose, if you go from 20-30 dollars every few months in DL games, to only 10.

This must akin to disarming a bomb for them, if they do this right they will be hero's ( they will add new features, revenue, give players what they want, finally end the stupid xbl comparisons, etc)

however if they take away too much of what should be at the core ( let's just say making people pay for party chat would disjoint the player base somewhat) and forget why psn popular in the first place (give paying people extra but don't divide the player base with features) this is going to blow up in their face and undo all their hard work so far.

Basically they can't get too greedy with features and pricing.

As a guy who shells out for Xbox Live, I don't see what the trouble is. The money to run reliable servers has to come from SOMEWHERE. I don't get this entitlement complex where everything thinks they deserve major things for free. That's the mentality that leads to console modding (imports and backups, my left nut!) and the inevitable consequences.

this is a better idea than some false premium content; then at least they can beef up what is given as content for free and make the connection and networking issues have some sort of financial backing(hopefully).

I love all you bitches whining about a company trying to make a profit. SONY is not a NON-PROFIT organization, they are in business to make money, so is Microsoft, Nintendo, Ford, etc. Profit enable companies to research and develop new product to bring to the market to make all you whiners happy. Please, if you don't want to pay for shit, move to North Korea. Otherwise STFU already.

I may be in the minority, but as long as they keep online multiplayer free of charge, they'll never get a dollar out of me. I think I was the only person here who really wasn't turned on by the PSone access or any of the other "perks". The only reason I pay for Live is because its required to play with my friends, and that's the only way I'll pay for PSN, too.

@Czech Monster

Just for you, Sony has a special access fee. Just cope up 899.99 per year, you can have all you can play PS1 games.

Me? I will just pass.

And yes, baseline will be free just like going to web site is free as long as you pay for your baseline cable/dsl/phone/and fios.

Sony should seriously charge for people who are willing to pay for contents. Don't stop at 49.99 bull crap. Just charge them like 1000 bux and recoup some money from them sony fan boys and girls.

Well this is interesting. While Xbox Live is clearly worth the coin, PSN in it's curent state certainly is not. And whats Sony to charge for? A large portion of online functionality is outlayed on the devs shoulders to provide a mutliplayer experience, hence the lack of any sort of standards on PSN. Just charge for Home Sony, then we can all smile and keep on with our business.

Though paying money for things is never fun, I do appreciate Sony's "approach" by suggesting that a basic online service should provide multiplayer gaming. I respect that more than pretending that being able to play a game online is a luxury. Obviously, we'll see if they maintain this approach. Though other than gaming, I can't imagine what they would offer that I would want to pay for since I don't really understand the whole premium theme/avatar costume/home thing.

is it me or are all Jim's "report"/"articles" revolve more around PS3's negativity?...may it be from small minute news such as "mandatory installs" to something else..

you always try to, and might i add, forcing to show negativity towards the PS3..and sometimes subtle way of pointing out Sony's flaws (Modern Warfare 2 glitch comes to mind)

it doesnt take a genius to realize this..just look at the past Jim articles

really Jim? are you that much big of a PS3 detractor?

anyways back to the story..
i saw some of the so called details of the paid subscription for the PSN few months ago..i dont mind paying a few moolahs if i would get a few extras like there was a package there that says unlimited (?) PS1 games and extra movies, exclusive demo games, etc..

i dont mind that, important thing is that it is STILL TO FREE TO PLAY ONLINE..yay!

I thought I recall Jim being impressed by Sonys black box of Blu-Ray.

Maybe he's amused at how quickly everyone gets up in arms about this stuff and how quickly it devolves into a RRoD vs this and that.

Why do people take this stuff so personally? If you have a problem with Jims articles, heres a hint - don't read them.

I doubt I'll pay for any premium service on PSN simply because I'm paying for a premium service on the 360.

It's not because "LOL I'm a 360 fanboy," it's because I only have single-player games on my PS3, I don't have a headset, and all the people on my PS3 friendlist have a 360 and a Gold sub, so we do party chat and play online on that console.

For me, the only thing that would make me pay for PSN is Microsoft bowing out of the console race and shutting down XBL.

I actually look forward to seeing what the new services are and whether they might be worth paying a fee for. I have absolutely no problem with paying for premium services as long as the basic system and online play stays FREE!!

(though I don't think that cross game chat should be regarded as a "premium service" until their QA department ensures that games that are supposed to have voice chat actually do have working voice chat and not the fail that was voice for Sacred 2 and Battlefield 43).

If the money was spent on reliable servers, that'd be one thing. They aren't. The vast majority of Xbox 360 games are Peer-To-Peer - thus, it's the user supplying the bandwidth, not Microsoft.

Truer words have never been spoken, that doesn't make this any less another one of Sony's boneheaded decisions, i mean they are just beginning to crawl out of the hole they have been for the last 3 years and they are already doing things that might push them back in.
