I have come to the conclusion that those publishers attempting to peddle 3D gaming to the masses are no starting to come across as snake oil salesmen. So it is that Sony has added another miracle cure to 3D's list of extraordinary powers -- it could make you slightly better at videogames!
"If you're playing a racing game and you're getting some additional [3D] information you can actually measure distances with your eyes, making it easier to judge breaking," claims Sony's Simon Benson. "Many of our hardcore gamers are already pretty good at that anyway, so how much of an edge is it going to give them compared to someone who's only just tried a game for the first time?
"We often see that if you give the controller to someone for the first time they might crash a lot until they get used to the fact that they've got to use other cues to perceive distances and breaking and stuff like that, but suddenly you can give a controller to someone to play a stereoscopic driving game and even if they've not played it before the cues are more relevant to them because they're used to measuring things with their eyes and they really do feel like it's more familiar to them."
Benson did admit that hardcore gamers might experience a smaller increase in gaming power than total newcomers, but that he believes that a slight edge over HDTV users could still be there. Of course, this is mostly hypothetical, and depends on whether a gamer can perform while vomiting, dealing with headaches, and keeping the glasses on his face.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I'm calling bullshit on Sony.
Oops .. crap, forgot this was a Sterling post. I'll rephrase; OMG your hilarious jim SONY IS SO DUMB and 3D sucks because Nintendo is better!!
Also: they're kind of right, in my experience. I own the Wicked3D hardware for PC. I remember playing Deus Ex and other FPS games and finding that any kind of projectile weapon became ridiculously easy to dodge because spatial awareness was so much better.
I HAVE PLAYED RAD RACER IN 3D.
This is just fancy talk for "Videogames will help improve your hand eye coordination" but with 3D thrown in at the start of that sentence.
''I have a cure for all ailments, Mr Marston.''
Thank you.
I believe what he really meant to say was "Breakin'", and that the qutoe should be attributed to Shabba Doo.
really, snake oil comparisons aside, thats actually a valid a argument regarding 3D
Example two: Remember how awesome 2D platformers were? And how 3D platformers basically suck anytime you need to do precision jumping? That's because you can't accurately judge 3D space. If you could, jumping sections would be a breeze.
Things might be easier to juddge for those who dont pick a sniper as default.
You might want to lay off on the logic a bit. Sterling posts are a bit like Bizarro world, in that logic doesn't really apply. He doesn't actually care if something is true or not, as long as it can be twisted to suit his purposes.
Interesting examples, though. I can't help but wonder if the illusion of depth would help in sports games, particularly baseball. You know, I wasn't much enthused for 3D, but thanks to Sterlings constant bashing, I'm starting to see some possibilities.
Aside from the possibility of making games easier, I would love to try a game in 3D just for the experience.
Jim, you're 100% right--3D Peddlers=Snake Oil Salesmen.
lol, it's braking you jackass.
If Microsoft were pushing 3D you would all be like "Fucking yeah! Halo is goin to be teh roxors in 3D Whooooo!" "Console warz overz whooo we got's da future, we gots da 3Dz!"
Luckily Nintendo has no glasses for the 3DS because that gives fanboys an excuse to like the 3DS while HATING Sony's home 3D solution. You do realise that if a 3D TV + Glasses hurt your fragile eyes or your fragile brain, then a 3DS will likely have the same effect? Right?
Back when stereoscopic 3D was REALLY new tech (talking a couple of years ago, way before Avatard), I was lucky enough to get to a gaming convention in England, i played a Counter Strike style Half life mod in (very early development) stereoscopic 3D and a game similar to Need For Speed. It was fucking awesome!
Barely noticed the glasses once you were engrossed in the game, my perfectly functioning eyes didn't hurt at all and the effect was AWESOME.
As someone who has PLAYED GAMES with (very early) active shutter / stereoscopic 3D technology I can safely say I'm super stoked for 3D and will happily put a couple of grand down on a 3D TV when they're readily available and once the "early adopter price" has passed. Hell i'm even more than happy to spend a couple of hundred quid on 4+ pairs of nice glasses. - For movie nights.
Seriously, once you've actually used modern glasses-required 3D to play some games THEN you can bitch and moan and say how shit it is. I can't wait to hit up the Sony Style store in town to check it out.
It's just "Well it'll make non-gamers better at games" crap.. Considering Nintendo corners the market on casual gaming without using 3D -or even powerful graphics- we can just chalk this up to Sony actually trying to find a reason to shovel shit down our throats instead of just going ahead and doing it.
