Sony: 2009 is the 'year of the PSP' photo

Oh Sony, you really need to stop saying that each year will be "the year of" something, because when it invariably isn't, you look like a real prat. I know, you're not listening, so go right ahead and claim that 2009 will be the year of the PSP. Clearly 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 were all practice years.

"I also think 2009 is going to be the year of the PSP," claimed PlayStation Canada's PR boy Mark Levitan. "We have Resistance: Retribution coming in February but I’ve seen a lot of the stuff in development and it is not a mistake by any means to a buy a PSP now."

The PlayStation Portable has been around for four years, and it has failed to have the robust library or developer support that the technically inferior DS has accumulated. Don't get me wrong, I adore my PSP just as much as my DS, but I really wish Sony would stop talking and start doing. Sure, Resistance is heading to the PSP, but what then? The release schedule for this year and next is pathetically thin, and of that list, not even a handful of enthralling games are evident.

I don't think my PSP, for what games are on it, was a mistake. But at the same time, it gathers dust for long periods of time while the DS spoils me for choice. I crave a reason to turn my PSP on, and right now, Sony isn't giving me one. It's merely giving me promise after promise, just like usual.

I'm gonna have to say "um, probably not" on that one... being they've said the same thing a few times before.

Wasn't last year "the year of the PSP" or "the year of the PS3". If Sony would stop making bull shit statements maybe they wouldn't let people down as much.

Yes, I feel the same as Jim, I haven't even turned on my PSP is ages, when it seems like my DS gets all the lovin, (especially sinse I just bought a new metallic silver DS lite, my fourth DS that I have owned. they really need to make the touch screens on the DS more like the iPod touch, and put like a more scratch resistant layer over it, but that is for another time.)

Compared to Square-Enix, Sony hasn't done crap for the PSP, especially in Japan.

Download the update to get the PSP store...

Loads of games on that (Driver, Syphon Filter... etc). Looks like I'm gonna waste alot of £3.49's on that.

Didn't they say the last 3 years were going to be the year of PS3?

It's really sad how little of a long term impact MGS4 had, AMAZING game, but everybody forgot about it once they stopped showing Ads in media.

And this PSP Resistance game? I don't know, GOW chains of olympus is pretty fucking insane, I don't think any game has topped that game in terms of pushing the PSP's power. Chains of Olympus pretty much defeats the idea of not being able to create engrossing portable games.

Everybody know though, if they made a component to Little Big Planet that would play on PSP, then the PSP would sell like fucking hotcakes.

@weedgan

Ya if they made a LBP esque game, that would be amazing, and be a DO BUY!

Sony, please wait until you dominate a year before proclaiming it'll be yours.

I can't speak for everyone but it definitely will be the year of the PSP for me. There are a shitload of games that I'm REALLY looking forward to coming out next year.

It was the year of the PSP whenever they cracked it and let me put gameboy emulators on it.

Not that I do that. But still. SIX GOLDEN COINS GANGSTA!

for whtas it worth i play my psp all the time and i'm never starved for a game thats worth my time. I mean Star Ocean: first departure just came out so i'll be playin that for awhile as well as Star ocean 2 whenever that comes out. theres alot of good rpgs and ports which is mostly what i play anyway. But i suppose other than the "big" titles it definately lacks selection. When i think of all the DS games that in no way couldn't be reproduced on teh psp (most ds games only make marginal use of 2 screens for a map or inventory type screen, and many dont even make good use of the touchscreen. Meaning any of the games COULD be made for the psp sadly developers don't. The real question is how much of that can we really blame on sony?

Ah, I bought a PSP not too long ago. They're having a promotion at Gamestop where for 10 bucks on top of the price of a used original-model PSP, you get two used games, each valued at 19.99 or less. I played it a fair bit the first week, but lately it's just sat there on my desk collecting dust. Good thing Sony has a 30-day return policy on consoles. In fact I've got the PSP in my car right now, ready to be returned once I'm done with work for the day. I love the thing in principle, but yeah, I also have an aversion to spending relatively large sums of money for things I rarely use.

I love my PSP. They are plenty of games on there, but what makes it so amazing is CFW. Heck, if the PS3 had all the CFW stuff of the PSP and more, it would be the best console ever.

Dissdia and Birth By Sleep look amazing, anything else is just a bonus. I will definitely buy those games.

Sounds like Sony has been hanging out with Peter Molyneaux(sp?) too much.

I hate metal pipes, they get super hot, they're a bitch to clean, and the bowl is tiny. Go with a nice glass.

Sure the DS has a much larger selection but honestly if we were to compare the GOOD games that's another story. I have a hard time when people say the DS has a great selection cuz most of what's put on the console is absolute crap.

I use both my PSP and my DS fairly equally and I think their selection of games is comparable if we throw out all the garbage (of which the DS has a lot more). It's all a matter of preference. The DS isn't doing better at sales because it's got more games. It's because it's the cheaper of the two systems.

We've seen it in every generation previous and we'll continue to see it as long as consoles are made. Cheap is what people look for. Let's not forget of course that Nintendo already had the stranglehold on the handheld market when Sony first came along.

I've actually considered buying a PSP. It does appear to have a few worthwhile exclusives in my eyes: Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, MGS: Portable Ops, GoW: Chains of Olympus, and FF: Dissidia all look very appealing to me. That's 4 games plus any NOT ROMs I would put on there. But as for saying 2009 is it's year, it only seems to have 2 or 3 big releases, which doesn't really seem like domination to me.

Loving my PSP, and it is selling better than ever, but, seriously; Chains of Olympus, Crisis Core, Patapon, Lumines, and Syphon Filter need some friends on the shelf.

It's certainly not a bad idea to buy a PSP now. After four years, they've come out with at least five games I want to play.
