Sonic Unleashed is 'what loyal fans want' photo

Sonic Team director Yoshihisa Hashimoto has been chatting about Sega's latest attempt at reviving the spiky one's broken legacy, Sonic Unleashed, by boldly claiming that it can win back the love of the older fans. Despite Sonic's focus on the kiddy market, Hashimoto claims that there is enough gameplay in Unleashed to keep advanced players happy.

"Sonic Unleashed has the gameplay elements that loyal Sonic fans want," he claims. "It is not designed to be in the same format as classic Sonic, but we took out the best part of classic Sonic and successfully revived it to be a new Sonic the Hedgehog of the 21st century."

Hashimoto also admits that he agrees with the critical battering that Sonic has had over the years: "I think the fans' evaluations are fair. I often read the forums run by Sonic fans on a routine basis. I hardly feel any discomfort from their comments. I often find myself rather agreeable to them. I believe that Sonic Unleashed will be accepted by many of the Sonic fans."

Speaking as a loyal Sonic fan, I would debate the assertion that pure speed was the "best" part of the old games. In fact, I debated it quite thoroughly in a previous feature. That said, readers will know that I played Sonic Unleashed in Tokyo, and I did like it. It's not like the old days, but it did not suck.

I'm not convinced. The vids that show the "classic" 2d sections look like you hold right and press jump every now and then.

Why can't focus on platforming and exploration like the old games?

I'm at "Do want?" too. I looked and a lot of the never gameplay shows just stuff breaking up the speed. you go from 300mph to 0 all because you didn't press b in the 1/4th second they give you.

Since they delayed it I guess they are actually trying this time, but I'm far from convinced.

As someone who never really enjoyed Sonic games, I dont understand what people seem to find lacking in newer titles.

To me, Sonic was just a blue ball bolting to the right as fast as possible with as little interaction as possible. In between the beginning and the end there was little more than bells and whistles of a low budget casino and a few jumps to simulate actual gameplay.

If Sonic was invented today, the concept would be laughed at. This is why a revival is impossible. Its a pet cemetery situation.

More friends! A werewolf transformation!

These are the things I want in a Sonic game!

Looks too fun to play, I think we're getting 9 different areas, each with two acts and a werehog level, and of course there is also extra day and night levels to unlock for each area.

Sooo, we're looking at around 27 levels of pure Sonic?

I though all Sonic fans wanted was a good game for once regardless of what gameplay elements it has

I think this game may be a step in the right direction, but there are still some things that irk me from what I've seen. These things are the controls when Sonic is WALKING around his environment and not moving straight (it is WAAAY too clunky. Sonic might only control best when he's running in one direction, which is weird when Werehog seems to control just fine...) and that Sonic's levels may focus too much on "RUNRUNRUNRUNRUNRUNRUN!" leaving the Werehog portions to do all the platforming. I want a mixture of the two, Sega. It's possible. Look at the old games.

Still, I'm getting the game through Gamefly. If I end up liking it, I'll go out and buy it to tell Sega "Make more like THIS!"

that picture looks rather like "Sonic 3D" with the textures.

I was a loyal Sonic fan until the Secret Rings came out. I hated that game so much I denounced Sonic entirely. I had no interest in this game whatsoever until Jim said "it didn't suck." Now I don't know what to do! I guess I'll just have to wait for the official Destructoid review.

As a fan, like many have said before, speed is not the answer and I could careless if the game is 2D or 3D, I just want Sonic to be a fun platformer again.

While I'm at the "do want" stage for this game, I want to hear more about Sonic and the Black Knight.

I know I said I was going to find that nintendo power article and write a blog myself, but I can't find that issue...so im-a link someone elses summary.

link has pics

If the promises set forth in that article are held close too, I think it can be a good game.

I really want this to be good. I love sonic but the last one I enjoyed was on the dreamcast, and even that didn't hold a candle to what was was on the genesis.

Well the screen shot looks moslty 2D to me so they might be getting something right, or close to right.
