Sonic Team director Yoshihisa Hashimoto has been chatting about Sega's latest attempt at reviving the spiky one's broken legacy, Sonic Unleashed, by boldly claiming that it can win back the love of the older fans. Despite Sonic's focus on the kiddy market, Hashimoto claims that there is enough gameplay in Unleashed to keep advanced players happy.
"Sonic Unleashed has the gameplay elements that loyal Sonic fans want," he claims. "It is not designed to be in the same format as classic Sonic, but we took out the best part of classic Sonic and successfully revived it to be a new Sonic the Hedgehog of the 21st century."
Hashimoto also admits that he agrees with the critical battering that Sonic has had over the years: "I think the fans' evaluations are fair. I often read the forums run by Sonic fans on a routine basis. I hardly feel any discomfort from their comments. I often find myself rather agreeable to them. I believe that Sonic Unleashed will be accepted by many of the Sonic fans."
Speaking as a loyal Sonic fan, I would debate the assertion that pure speed was the "best" part of the old games. In fact, I debated it quite thoroughly in a previous feature. That said, readers will know that I played Sonic Unleashed in Tokyo, and I did like it. It's not like the old days, but it did not suck.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Why can't focus on platforming and exploration like the old games?
Will we ever get a 2.5 sonic or castelvania this gen?
To me, Sonic was just a blue ball bolting to the right as fast as possible with as little interaction as possible. In between the beginning and the end there was little more than bells and whistles of a low budget casino and a few jumps to simulate actual gameplay.
If Sonic was invented today, the concept would be laughed at. This is why a revival is impossible. Its a pet cemetery situation.
These are the things I want in a Sonic game!
Sooo, we're looking at around 27 levels of pure Sonic?
Still, I'm getting the game through Gamefly. If I end up liking it, I'll go out and buy it to tell Sega "Make more like THIS!"
As a fan, like many have said before, speed is not the answer and I could careless if the game is 2D or 3D, I just want Sonic to be a fun platformer again.
I know I said I was going to find that nintendo power article and write a blog myself, but I can't find that issue...so im-a link someone elses summary.
link has pics
If the promises set forth in that article are held close too, I think it can be a good game.

I'm all for it. Never liked Sonic as a 3D chase view.
