Sonic the Hedgehog = the UK's favorite videogame character photo

I've always believed that the hardcore Sega and Sonic faithful are nearly always British. It seems that Brit gamers have a stronger affiliation with the Mega Drive than anybody else, and also have a scary loyalty to Sonic the Hedgehog, despite the fact that for the past several years, his games have been utter garbage.

With that in mind, it's somewhat unsurprising that the spiky blue one has topped a list of the UK's favorite videogame characters. He narrowly beat Mario by a 3% margin, and wiped the floor with other classic characters such as Link and Pac-Man. Here's the full list:

  1. Sonic the Hedgehog (24 per cent)
  2. Super Mario (21 per cent)
  3. Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) (16 per cent)
  4. Donkey Kong (11 per cent)
  5. Pac Man (10 per cent)
  6. Link (The Legend of Zelda) (5 per cent)
  7. Max Payne (4 per cent)
  8. Pikachu (Pokémon) (3 per cent)
  9. Niko Belic [sic] (Grand Theft Auto series) (2 per cent)
  10. Blanka (Street Fighter) (1 per cent)

The vote was cast with over 500 gamers as part of the London Games Festival. As someone who counts himself among those foolish Brit gamers who have a strange battered-wife-syndrome affiliation with Sega, I can't help but feel a little sense of satisfaction that Sonic beat Mario. Okay, so the voting public wasn't a huge slice of the population, BUT IT STILL COUNTS!

Also, this is a good place to build up my false hope for Sonic Unleashed again. It's gonna be good this time, I got a good feeling. A good feeling! ... I think.

I see no samus.

also, over 500 gamers? i find that a very small polling circle (or whatever it is)

if it were over 2500, i'd be more inclined to think "that's fair". but it's not over 2500, so it's too small a group to be polling.

Yards Prower:

First off, epic name.

Second off, I kept my hope muted for this until I played it. Having played it, I am actually a lot more confident in it. If you haven't done so, please read my hands-on with Unleashed. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised.

After Sonic 2, I sort of lost interest in the character. I wonder if that would have been different if I grew up in the UK...

I did read it, I just don't want to believe it... I'm just hoping that if I expect a Sonic 2006; a game that gave cancer patients more cancer, Sonic Unleashed will feel like... like... Sonic 3...

Then again, does reverse psychology (or whatever it's called) work if you're doing it on yourself?

I'm going to take your word for it... I trust your judgement...

Besides, I'm going to buy it anyway regardless... It's one of those Sonic fan for life things... Yeah... It creeps me out too... *shudders*

The British love Sonic. They also love blood sausage and warm beer. I think this says more about Sonic than anything else. :P

wow am i the only person who hates sonic, mario, and donkey kong (or any kong for that matter), and even though i love zelda games (atleast orcarina of time and a link to the past) link doesn't ever speak which prohibits him from being in my top 10. He lacks any sort of real emotion but that's a different discussion altogether. Damn brits need to get it together and make a real list.

I don't understand how Pac Man could be better than Link, Link has always appeared in great games (official) as opposed to Pac Man where he has only really appeared in one good game (that has been rereleased constantly)

Once again most of my fellow countrymen continue to embarrass us... I'm highly surprised Crash Bandicoot or Spyro did not make that list.

Wow...a Max Payne game hasn't come out in how many years? That's impressive; unless you can attribute it to the abortion of a film, related in name only.

What an odd list. I blame the metric system and lower drinking age.

Celica: No that can't be true. Canadians are generally all right in the head and we have both of those things. We definitely don't love Sonic that much though.

How many people did they ask? Seriously Blanka on place 10? Most people don't even play Fighting Games anymore and Blanka is a very weird choice when you are asked what your favorite character is.

Also apparently people in the UK haven't played games for 15 years, otherwise Sonic wouldn't be their favorite.

@ MonkeySpoon

Haha yeah true but what saves us Canadians is due to an anomaly since we drive on the right side of the road, both literally and figuratively. It has some sort of nullifying magic that prevents us from creating nonsensical lists. Or I could be stretching seeing as I really didn't think out my comment haha.

Although in all fairness, Sonic would likely be at the top of my list anyways...I never played any of the crappy Sonics :P

I'm going to say that this was the doing of Sonic The Comic. That and we're not afraid to run the sonic cartoons to the ground (read sonic cartoons as "Sonic Underground" and to the ground to read "I start voting for Big Brother in distraction")
