I've always believed that the hardcore Sega and Sonic faithful are nearly always British. It seems that Brit gamers have a stronger affiliation with the Mega Drive than anybody else, and also have a scary loyalty to Sonic the Hedgehog, despite the fact that for the past several years, his games have been utter garbage.
With that in mind, it's somewhat unsurprising that the spiky blue one has topped a list of the UK's favorite videogame characters. He narrowly beat Mario by a 3% margin, and wiped the floor with other classic characters such as Link and Pac-Man. Here's the full list:
- Sonic the Hedgehog (24 per cent)
- Super Mario (21 per cent)
- Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) (16 per cent)
- Donkey Kong (11 per cent)
- Pac Man (10 per cent)
- Link (The Legend of Zelda) (5 per cent)
- Max Payne (4 per cent)
- Pikachu (Pokémon) (3 per cent)
- Niko Belic [sic] (Grand Theft Auto series) (2 per cent)
- Blanka (Street Fighter) (1 per cent)
The vote was cast with over 500 gamers as part of the London Games Festival. As someone who counts himself among those foolish Brit gamers who have a strange battered-wife-syndrome affiliation with Sega, I can't help but feel a little sense of satisfaction that Sonic beat Mario. Okay, so the voting public wasn't a huge slice of the population, BUT IT STILL COUNTS!
Also, this is a good place to build up my false hope for Sonic Unleashed again. It's gonna be good this time, I got a good feeling. A good feeling! ... I think.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
grabbed this from sfghq, but I hear it's from /b/...
also, over 500 gamers? i find that a very small polling circle (or whatever it is)
if it were over 2500, i'd be more inclined to think "that's fair". but it's not over 2500, so it's too small a group to be polling.
First off, epic name.
Second off, I kept my hope muted for this until I played it. Having played it, I am actually a lot more confident in it. If you haven't done so, please read my hands-on with Unleashed. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised.
I did read it, I just don't want to believe it... I'm just hoping that if I expect a Sonic 2006; a game that gave cancer patients more cancer, Sonic Unleashed will feel like... like... Sonic 3...
Then again, does reverse psychology (or whatever it's called) work if you're doing it on yourself?
I'm going to take your word for it... I trust your judgement...
Besides, I'm going to buy it anyway regardless... It's one of those Sonic fan for life things... Yeah... It creeps me out too... *shudders*
I'm surprised he's on that list at all.
Glad sonic won though.
Also apparently people in the UK haven't played games for 15 years, otherwise Sonic wouldn't be their favorite.
Haha yeah true but what saves us Canadians is due to an anomaly since we drive on the right side of the road, both literally and figuratively. It has some sort of nullifying magic that prevents us from creating nonsensical lists. Or I could be stretching seeing as I really didn't think out my comment haha.
Although in all fairness, Sonic would likely be at the top of my list anyways...I never played any of the crappy Sonics :P
