I'm not about to argue on your opinion there since I have no place in telling you what you should/shouldn't like, but I do want to point out one thing that you've got a little incorrect. From the sounds of it you are pointing out the Hedgehog Engine as a gameplay engine, when in fact the Hedgehog Engine is just a graphics engine. Colours doesn't even use the hedgehog engine as far as I know since I don't think the H.E was ever used on any of the Wii titles.
Personally I think the Hedgehog Engine is great, it puts out some nice visuals.

As much as I've enjoyed their older games, I say screw pleasing the old fans. They're bitter, whiny and want a repackaged Sonic 3K for eternity, and Sonic Team puts in effort to give it and fails trying to make something that they probably don't really want to.
Doesn't help that the Sonic fanbase is arguably the worst fanbase on the internet, either.

In my opinion, in the past 10 years or so Sonic Team has been trying to innovate in the wrong place. They've been trying to innovate by adding different forms of gameplay to the games (*cough* Werehog), but I think they should have tried to innovate in the level design instead, without messing too much with the core gameplay.
