Sonic Team disowns last console efforts, shares Unleashed details

Sonic Team disowns last console efforts, shares Unleashed details photo

If you have never played Sonic the Hedgehog for the Xbox 360 or PS3, I urge you to download the demo -- and I am being serious. It is so bad that I was actually impressed by what I saw. The game was so ill-conceived and shoddily designed it was almost artistic. Sonic and the Secret Rings for the Wii, while an improvement, was still a massive disappointment. It seems that Sonic Team knows these facts, as it has gone to great lengths to assure fans that Sonic Unleashed is not like those works of shame.

"As a development team, we originally started off this project planning to create Sonic Adventure 3", stated lead designer Yoshihisa Hashimoto. "In our minds, this game will have more in common with the older Sonic Adventure series. It has no relation to Sonic the Hedgehog [on PS3/Xbox 360] or Sonic and the Secret Rings."

Hashimoto also shared a few slight details about the upcoming game, which will be made available for all three current-gen consoles. He promised that Sonic Unleashed will "purely be Sonic's game" and that the spin attack and homing attack will return. That's fine, provided the homing attack doesn't randomly send you off the edge of cliffs in this one.

That bone of contention, the "Were-Sonic" was also touched upon. In his new monstrous form, Sonic will be "a slightly slower and yet more agile beast. Where Sonic dodges past obstacles, Were-Sonic manhandles them out of the way and can toss enemies around like nobody's business." He's also going to use his long arms to swing across a level as opposed to running.

I am as cynical as the next man about this game, but I am still willing to give it a chance, Werehog and all. We really haven't seen it in action and won't know if it's good or bad until then. By all means, keep the cynicism (we've been burned a LOT by Sonic Team) but still, let's keep an open mind.

Um, because they want a different style of gameplay? He's big, he's strong, and he's slow. It's not exactly backwards, it's a pretty tried and tested gameplay style.

You sound like Fox News. "Whatever happened to the day of Pong!"
Do you want it to be supremely easy?

@DaedHead8
It could have been worse. Vampire Sonic anyone? That way he can really suck now.

As far as the game goes. I've always been a Sonic fan, but I agree that the 3d games with the exception of Adventure 1, 2 and Heroes were all disappointments.

I understand the desire for different gameplay. However, I'm one of those folks that really only appreciates the first Sonic game. Therefore all I want out of Sonic is speed and power ups to increase his speed. I guess I'm old fashioned that way.

DaedHead8: Hey, I'm the same way. I loved the old Sonics and want nothing more than a proper Sonic game. However, shitting on this power up because it makes you slower, without having even seen a single solitary bit of footage, is not fair.

As I said, be cynical as Hell (I certainly am), but I'm not going to outright say it is absolute shit without having even seen it.

Sonic was all about speed for me growing up, but looking back the franchise was always much worse than most of the Mario platformers. I liked the first 3 (I was too young to know the sequels were dross) and sonic levels of the adventure games. Dash was probably the best iteration of the franchise since the original though.

This will probably be rubbish... werewolf? Though if they avoid the typical mess of terrible additional characters, I might go for it. Maybe...

If you haven't, check out Sonic CD. It was for sega cd but it also can be found for PC. IMO it's the only sonic game besides the first one thats worth playing, even if it does have a wacky time travel story line.

Let's face it, when they do something "new" with the Sonic games, people bitch. When they don't do something "new" with the Sonic games, people bitch. It's like nobody can be happy with a new Sonic game anymore. If you really feel that way about it, then go back and play your favorite, and stop complaining, because apparently, according to the people bitching, there will never be another "real" Sonic game anymore.

Myself, although I'm not excited about "were-sonic", I realize that it could easily be worse, they could've made him "emo with a bad attitude", oh, wait, they did, Shadow (blech). Like the previous post about Sonic games on Dtoid, Sonic was built for platforming first, speed second, so taking a different approach to the platforming COULD be a good thing.

I don't see why you guys say it will take a miracle to make a good Sonic game. Sonic Rush for ds was great, it's just those terrible 3D ones (except for SA and SA2) but I think Sonic Team learned their lesson by finally admitting it, and I also think this game has a chance because it plays like a sidescroller.

Why they thought in order to make Sonic fun again, they had to change him in to a werewolf is beyond me. People play Sonic games... to play Sonic.

Has Sonic ever had guns? I think that would be a cool new concept if they were really looking for one. Have him run and do some amazing jump off a ramp in to the air, then bust out double uzi's and pull off some Devil May Cry nonsense before landing and getting back to the normal platforming... just a thought. That would be cool in my book but I guess maybe that would be too cool for Sega.

Doesn't even have to be guns really. Could be anything. Missile pack firing, ring tossing, spike shooting, grappling red shoes...

Okay Sonic Adventure 3? Well for me that's isn't much hope for my tastes. After all Sonic X was based on SA 1&2. Also, they forced you to play as the other character in order to beat the game. Lastly Sonic 06 is considered SA3 because of the crappy camera/controls and tacked on RPG stuff.

In my opinion, Sonic Heroes was the stalemate of the franchise. Not quite as good as SA1, not quite as bad as people make it out to be. On one end, it did go back to basics of Emerald collecting and the level design is undoubtedly the best we've seen barring Rush.
The camera angle sucked as usual, but the idea of teams with each person with a different attribute was a novel concept in a gameplay standpoint. Thats why I believe there should be one and ONLY one iteration of that game, but the game was mediocre at best.

The camera always sucked though. This game gives me faith.

I suppose this is all for the better. At least there's no chance of me being over-hyped for this game.

If they had said, "We're trying to make it like the Genesis games, but with better graphics and more creative levels," then I would be obsessed with this game like a heroin addict. And it would inevitably disappoint me.

I don't care what anyone says, my hopes are officially "up".

Oh and "a slightly slower and yet more agile beast"? Really? That doesn't make any sense to me. Wouldn't bigger/slower also mean less agile? Regardless, I'm holding off judgment until I see what they've actually decided to do with this whole "were-hog" angle.

I think they mean nimble when they say agile. Were-sonic is slower but he's much more flexible and maneuverable whereas regular Sonic is about more reckless speed. Well that's what I reckon anyway

but finally Sonic Adventure 3 this is the kind of thing I want to see :-D

I still have hopes for this game. The Genesis/Megadrive Sonic fan in me says "WTF, WEREWOLF!?", but you know, as long as it's FUN, who cares? I'm not saying it WILL be fun, I'm just saying it could be. I'm waiting for videos and hands-on before I pass judgment.

And I don't care what anyone says, Sonic Adventure sucks. The Sonic levels were sort of good, but the shitty camera and loose controls made them a chore. And the extra characters were awful. A fucking slow, fat fishihg cat and a laser shooting robot? For a SONIC game? Were they on paote when they though6 that up?

Not only hasn't Sonic Team hasn't figured out how to transition from 2D to 3D, they just don't know how to code. Sonic Adventure was so buggy, Sonic regularly fell through the floor into a bottomless void. Controls in Adventure 2 were horrible. Sonic also regularly darts off into directions he shouldn't, and camera adjustment is impossible. Every chance possible, the game zooms in and out to show off amazingly cool moves -- without actually allowing you to play them out. Need I even bring up the issue over 10-15 seconds of disc access every time a bit of text popped up on the screen? There's no voice acting, so... just text needs so much disc access? WHY?

Never mind design. These guys don't know how to develop software at all -- except graphics routines, of course.

You know what? I don't care. I never had a megadrive, and while I did play the original sonic games in my cousin's, and enjoyed them plenty, the fact is the series has sucked ass a lot longer than it was actually good. So unless the series takes an upturn so dramatic as to be unprecedented in gaming history, I'm just giving up on it. Sonic team are weak sauce.

Uh oh! He said the "adventure" word! Now I'm gone from not sure to pretty sure it's going to suck.

Hint to Sega Devs. Never say, use or even think "Adventure" when you do anything Sonic. "Adventure" is the cancer that is killing Sonic. Don't beleive me? Look at Sonic Rush then look at Sonic Rush Adventure. What's so wrong with "Robotnik is turning everything into robots and you have to stop him"? No Adventure. No Story. Not another forgetable character to add to the 20 or so you have now. Just Sonic, Robotnik, and a ton of enslaved animal robot's between them? It's not rocket science Sega. Just model the game after "Sonic 3 and Knuckels" (since they should have been one game to begin with) or Sonic CD and go from there.

Also, Show me actual gameplay of a level from start to finish and not some touched up trailer trash that hides how the game actually plays. I know how good you guys can make a trailer. Now show me you can make a game.
