Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection hits Golden Axe, Comix Zone with ugly filter photo

Sweet baby Jesus. What on Earth has Sega done to these screens of Comix Zone and Golden Axe (I, II, and III), taken from the upcoming Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next year?

The filter applied to these games to make them look less "16-bit" and more, uh -- damn, I don't even know ... well, it's hurting my brain. The good news is that it can be turned off, giving the games a more classic Genesis look and feel. Phew.

It's a good thing, too, because the collection looks crazy good, featuring over 40 Genesis classics from Altered Beast to Sonic the Hedgehog, and E-SWAT to Streets of Rage. The full list (minus the unlockables) can be found after the jump, and it's a damned fine collection that any fan of Sega or the Genesis is going to put on their "DO WANT" list.

But this filter needs to go, Sega. Seriously. My eyes. Am I the only one who's thinking this?

Looks radically superlative.

To bad the only good game SEGA ever made was Sonic .

This makes the Virtual Console releases kinda pointless.

I approve.

SERIOUSLY!!!! Filters always have and always will look like complete and utter shit!

We're all growed up, SEGA. We understand that 16-bit games were made with little squares that make pictures. In the name of sweet zombie jesus, just let the games stand on their own or an least provide an option to turn the filters off!

Yeah that filter sucks. I think its based on the 2xSAI or OpenGL rendering filter most emulators use based on new video hardware. Most of the time, it looks like shite! Can i has some pixels pwease?

By the way, those images are not from Golden Axe.

I believe those to be from Golden Axe II, a decent, but decidedly less good than the original game.

Yeah, what was said. I never used filters on emulation, it looks fucking terrible. That's why I usually try to play it on a CRT TV too, so it looks proper with the natural pixel settings and resolution.

That's a pretty sweet collection though.

This is nearly the same as the Genesis collection released for the PS2 a couple years back. The only real differences I can spot are the Streets of Rage trilogy (which were supposedly in the Japanese release) and maybe Beyond Oasis?

Nice, the have Beyond Oasis! That's a great game. Will there be any unlockable games?

Ugh. This looks like the screen's been smeared with ugly. or someone's taken the Smudge tool to it and gone crazy.

The only good filtering tool I've seen was the Super Eagle Engine used in the ZSNES not emulator. It blends the pixels but keeps a sharp resolution so it doesn't look like a bad photoshop job.

God I love Comix Zone.

Comix Zone is a game that needs a remake, preferable with really good cel shaded graphics to emphasize the comic book feel. That was a great game, but incredibly hard.

Missing Shadow Dancer from the PS2 collection, but it's got the Shining games which weren't on the PS2 release. I dunno. I'd be hard-pressed to buy unless there's some amazing extra games on this. (i.e., the Konami Genesis Games, which are absolutely NOT on this, I'm sure...)

@killias2

They're all being upscaled to 720p, too, so that'll be a nice improvement.

Shame that the games are being emulated by Backbone Entertainment, who apparently are some of the most mediocre game emulators out there. It makes me consider buying them all separately on Wii, just so that I can get them with proper emulation.

Well, they have Dynamite Headdy which means they must have Treasure's permission to put at least ONE of their games in so I'm not sure why Gunstar Heroes isn't on this thing.

Maybe it'll be one of the unlcokables?

This collection looks hideous. Apparently, Sega thinks kids these days are too stupid to appreciate the exact science that is pixel art. To me, what Sega has done to these games is like spray painting the Mona Lisa. Pixel art is a quickly fading art form, and Sega is only hastening its demise by rubbing vasolene all over their legacy games' graphics.

Oh well, at least we still have Mega Man 9.

The trick is that when you get it on a HDTV, it looks 16 bit. That's what I believe is going to happen.

@Grasshopper7

I remember RangerX, but sadly all I remember is it needed a 6 button controller and reminded me of Road Rash, sans the geriatric collisions. I do so miss the glory days of 16-bit.

looks awesome, too bad I've already bought sonic 1 + 2, SOR2, and golden axe for XBL crappy A.
However the addition of bonanza bros could just entice me enough.

That looks like an awesome collection. It's a great "fuck you" to the VC as well, so, do want.
Not that I don't love the VC, but it would cost around $320 to buy these all seperate. Plus the lack of memory to store them. Just a thought.
