Wow Sega, way to absolutely kill the good grace your game has earned! Sonic Colors' lead designer, Takashi Iizuka, has said that anybody who liked Sonic back in the Genesis days should stop looking forward to the upcoming Wii game, reiterating the previous message that Colors is for children in no uncertain terms.
"We know there are sometimes opinions about control from core gamers, but we're intending Sonic Colors to be played by children of probably between six and twelve years-old," he explains. "So, with Sonic Colors we have aimed to make a game that everyone can control and have fun in. So, it's not really a game for the core gamers. If you take the rail grind, it's something that's fast, not difficult but is fun to do and looks great. It's about making a game that's right for the core audience of the game."
Weird that he says that "everyone" can have fun with Sonic Colors ... except for Sonic's oldest fans. Apparently the "hardcore" gamer is incapable of enjoying Sonic Colors, which is an amazing PR claim considering the fact that so far, many hardcore gamers are more excited for Colors than they are for Sonic 4.
I really liked what I played of Sonic Colors, but according to Sega, I should just stop looking forward to it. Fair enough, guys! I'll henceforth write the game off as a load of crap, since apparently that's what you want. Seriously, what a dreadful way to go about promoting your game.
Sonic Colours 'not for core gamers' - Iizuka [CVG]
Sonic Colors: A game that uses creative environments that I've wanted to see in a Sonic game for years only in 3D. The whole game is based off of Sonic Unleashed day stages, which I loved, only with added powerups to make the game more interesting.
Sonic 4 Episode 1: 4 zones of rehash using an ok at best soundtrack and a shitty physics engine that's nothing close to the older Sonic games.
Hmmm, I wonder what I should be more excited about. Oh right Colors
I played the first sonic games as a kid, so why would I want a sonic game designed for adults? I want one made with the same intentions as the original. Which Sonic Colors seems to be doing.
Excellent point. This actually isn't a bad thing when you put it that way.
It's better than them over promising and under-delivering. They know who their audience is, and they're not going to try and trick the hardcore into getting a game they know will get crapped on.

Don't be insipid, man. You should know that being excited for a game before it releases and actually enjoying the whole experience while playing it is totally different.
Basically, Sega is doing pre-Damage Control. It's the core gamers who are going to mistakenly buy this game and tear it to shreds for not appealing to them in some way (which obviously Sega thinks it will). And once the core gamers hate it, the masses will hate it. So they're saving face before hand. Probably a smart idea.
Everyone comparing it to the daytime stages in sonic unleashed killed the buzz i had for it..,
So many people praise those stages and say theyre classic sonic, but i totally disagree.
I dont care if sega isnt making a sonic game thats exactly like the genesis games, i just want a good platformer with speed as a gimmick.
The daytime stages in unleashed were poorly designed because you hold right or up the whole time and occasionally face platforming via quick time events. It felt like a racing game that had you press buttons last minute to avoid pits and walls. No thanks.
@shouryuuken: Who's comparing Unleashed day stages to classic Sonic? That is so not true. But I think they're fun none the less. It's different but that doesn't make it bad (although you could just not like that style of gameplay and that's fine too)
leave it to Sega to add lulz to my day. :3
Well, further proof that Sega does not have a clue about what the Sonic fans wants. The Sonic games are not being bashed because the old fans are very demanding and want a game with features that is impossible to reach. They are treated as such because they are (almost) universally seen as bad. By players, by reviewres - basically everyone.
The view that "old fans want 2D, 3D is what new fans want" is superficial and idiotic. The old fans want good games, regardless of the number of dimensions. After all, there are many 2D games of Sonic: what were the Sonic Advance, Sonic Rush, Sonic Rivals games? To my knowledge, they were all 2D Sonic games, right? I am impressed with the ability of Sega (and several others as well) to not understand that.
Sonic Colors is causing a much better impression in the Sonic "community". Just go into any site of fans and see how the reaction is much more positive than in relation to Sonic 4. In a nutshell, is exactly what PJMan said up there.
Sense of entitlement mostly.
... how is this wierd? Given what I've seen of Sonic fans online I'd say it's bang-on.
That would be sad, if it wasn't patetic...
Awww, what the heck. I will laugh anyway...
When a game is entirely about running at high speeds and you can't see what's 20 meters on front of you, you got a problem. I know most of the stages from the first 4 games like the palm of my hand, but hell, playing them for the first time was infuriating, for you were prohibited from having fun with the great speeds, unless you for some reason loved the sound of rings going everywhere.
Pandering to the younger demographic is simply an excuse for mediocrity. Oh, and did I say that Sega needs to axe its PR and Marketing team NOW?
Basically, there's no excuse for buying or being disappointed about this game now. Because you know it's going to be bad.
I DO realize that, however this thread has nothing to do with Sonic 4...*fail*
You know, sega should realize that the skill on controlling the damn hedgehog has almost nothing to do with our ages; i still cant play sonic heroes/ or any other recent sonic' games.
Unless Sonic Colours has unicorns and rainbows, of course.
I'm not saying he's not saying that. I'm commenting on Jim's comment, not this other dude's. So I don't understand why you're trying to tell me what the other guy is implying.
They made it.
Ugh, does anyone have some asprin?
And... done. That was easy!
I mean, I had seen those loops and rail grinds that seemed to give no control to the player in the footage, but I hoped it's just in the initial stages, and a few more as cool "scripted events" of sorts, which I would be fine with as long as the rest of the game was 3D and side scrolling platforming bliss, but with what he says here it sounds like the bulk of the game will consist of such "cool for the kids to watch" parts with no real gameplay, basically what people have hated about 3D Sonic since its ineption, where it's all about speed and you win by just moving forward.
Meh. Way to fuck up a game you actually started to get right for once, Sonic Team.
But I know of the reputation of horrid games that's been spewing out over the last decade. This has made my mind think that the developers in control of Sonic have no flippin idea what the hell they're talking about and should sod off.
So maybe when they say we'll hate a Sonic game...We'll love it?
Eh?
...OR it could just be another shitty Sonic game...except this one plays itself because its for children.
Either way I watched the trailer and it looked really fun, plus: is it weird that I'm 30 years old and I want the pre-order hat (even though I don't even own a Wii). I'd put it on my newborn baby girl but then put it on my own head and run around my apartment when noone is looking!!
