If you think something "sucks," why would you buy it at any price? That doesn't make any sense.
I still wish they'd bring Hyper Sonic back from S3&K. He is THE form above Super Sonic, and he deserves more of a spotlight. Also Sonic CD is fine.
The other two places to get this game are through emulators (Kega Fusion) and the Sonic Gems Collection. This is coming out for Steam, right?
A) He could be a Sonic fanboy
B) He might want to support the XBLA $5 price point
C) He might want to support SEGA
I've never played this, but I'm highly sceptical.
Incidentally, the Japanese soundtrack is the only 'real' soundtrack. Put all subjectivity and semantics aside, and simply listen to the 'Past' chiptunes in Sonic CD, composed through the Mega CD's sound chip. SoA and Spencer couldn't figure out how to replace those past tunes. There's a total theme detach between the replacement US redbook tunes and those superb, unaltered Japanese past-theme chiptunes -- remixes of the original tracks.
It's a sharp reminder that both the Japanese chip and redbook tunes were composed in-house and side-by-side with the actual Sonic CD development team, during the actual production of the game. Purity of purpose and nods from core designers on the project during development = proper, original soundtrack. Hired-out/tacked-on replacement tracks for US localization = failure to achieve full gameplay symbiosis. Original Japanese soundtrack or mute the music.

FUTURE! :)
S3&K is still the best :)
5 dollars for a slightly modified ISO thank you very much! In any case, I'm not sure why this is such a problem. Sonic CD seems to be rather significantly more for the original release, and this allows you to play on your console (or phone or tablet).
In any case, I'm fairly sure it's more than a "modified" rom/iso. I'm pretty sure the game who made it had to do a lot in order to get it working smoothly. In fact, I think the reason why it's available on so many devices simultaneously is because this guy basically wrote a new modern engine to house it properly.
http://toucharcade.com/2011/08/25/gentlemen-start-your-squealing-sonic-cd-coming-to-ios/ - "To make a long story short, in the summer of 2009, pioneering iOS developer Christian Whitehead announced his "iPhone Retro Engine" and "Retro Engine Development Kit." Sonic CD was the proof of concept Christian used to show just how incredibly well his technology works. We quickly followed up with an interview with Whitehead who got into some details, and made mention that he did in fact pitch this whole project to Sega."
So.. yeah. This actually started as a labor of love over two years ago from a guy who built a new engine from scratch. After two years, Sega decided to let him follow his dream, and this is the reason Sonic CD is out.
So.. yeah. 5 bucks. Great price. Great version. Lots of love. Don't be a dick.
1) Sonic 2
2) Sonic CD
3) Sonic 3 & Knuckles (lock on)
Basically the first two because they are fantastically designed. Even though there are things in CD that feel different and change the way you play [time mechanic] it is nothing but a polished gem of a game. Sonic 3 & Knuckles are some of my favorites, but some of the levels are not well thought out and you can easily get mired and time out or just breeze by 95% of others. Overall, fantastic games, but missing some of the spot on level design of the predecessor.
Then again, this is a Mega Man 2 vs Mega Man 3 sort of debate.
In any regard, Sonic CD is certainly one of the best Sonic/Sega CD/Sega games ever. Well worth the price of admission, if you are a fan of 16 bit platformers.
@Sonic7877
Sonic CD is a bit different than the others, the time mechanic and the things involved with it lead to a game that uses more exploration than sonic games you're probably used to, but it's still really well done. The fact that this one has the spindash from Sonic 2 (the original CD spindash was terrible) should be a lot more approachable for someone who is used to Sonic, but not used to the quirks of the original Sonic CD.
I still can't believe this is only five bucks, that's like stealing. I want it to be the 20th so badly...
