Sonic and the Rings of Secret on the Wii photo

The signature Sega franchise has once again shown itself on next-gen consoles this year, making gamers wonder if they'd be better off with a refined 2D version (a-la Castlevania) or if we might actually enjoy a huge world that Sonic can explore while in a frenzied speeding blur. While details are still unclear (the game is slated for a Spring 2007 debut) it appears that the primary selling points are (1) Wiimote control schema -- no surprise there and (2) the jungle environment's reaction to Sonic's speed. Think about that: half the reason to buy this game is in the graphics. That said, how do you choose ... Wii or the other PS3 Sonic game (completely different plot - due mid Dec). We've posted a side by side comparison to show that even cartoony games are going to look dramatically different.

Think you can even handle Sonic speed on a Wiimote without punching holes in walls?

There's not much to deduce from the screenshots -- all you see are floral outdoor environments, dinosaurs, and not a Robotnic creation in sight -- unlike the PS3 images where cities are ablaze and robots are all over the jungles. Could this be a sort of racing adventure hybrid? Zzzzzzz ... who knows. But here's how you play it:

Wii remote control be able to tilt basic operation method or, jump with 2 buttons, with 1 button the brake. While moving sonic it starts running to left and right with inclination of Wii remote control, avoiding the obstacle with respect to field while taking item such as rings...

Sounds interesting, but will this be more fun that traditional controls? We'll have to see. It's challenging enough to precisely control Excite Truck (arcade-style fun) and Tony Hawk (I want to kill myself) on the Wii. Having played Sonic on the PS3 at E3 and it was tricky enough on SIXAXIS ... so who knows how this will be. Cool controls aside, there is a greater issue.  I found it especially strange that press paid so much much lip service into the visuals of the game, which are  lackluster. Check this machine translated EngRish:

Inside the jungle, vivid contrast is portrayed in the green where the sunlight which occasionally it can peep is dim. The scale and the speed impression until recently of exceeding the series catching also the person of the series first experience not only the fan, are the expectation....

Even if you're not a graphics queen, this is very important and goes back to the debates about immersion we had on a recent Podtoid podcast. If one of the main selling points of this game is indeed the rush of the jungle to Sonic's speed, owners of more than 1 console may want to pass on the Wii version to really experience what developers truly had in mind for this game. Them's fighting words, but I'm a Wii owner who knows what it can and can't do. For example, I bought Call of Duty 3, which even EGM thought it looked like a different game than the PS3 version. Fanboys may pelt me with rocks, but it's true.

The jury isn't out on this game, obviously, but I'm not giving it high marks for a first impression. If all this title can offer the opportunity to run into water and trees while looking half as ugly as it's other version, I may have to pass for a 1080 rendition. We'll see.  Here's one of two machine translated articles from GPara and Watch Impress:

As for corporation Sega, the Nintendo Co. corporation on December 2nd "game machine" Wii "business high speed bodily sensation action sells the ring of sonic and secret" of sale schedule 2007 spring. Price is undecided.

"Wii as for ring of sonic and secret", the popularity action series up-to-date work of Sega. Niero, Sonic and the Rings of Secret (aka Sonic WildFire) is a Wii exclusive. So, there won't be a PS3 port of it. The only PS3 Sonic game is the same one that was released for the 360.

But in all seriousness, were any of the sonic games really that good? To be honest, I didn't even like the original Mega Drive ones a whole lot. In fact, my fave to date is probably Sonic Adventure on the DC. So I guess you can tell I'm no Sonic lover.

Still, its a shame to see each further Sonic game released getting worse and worse. At least the DS had a half decent title way back when.

Jesus, those screenies look awesome! Am I the only one considering actually buying this game when it's out? The E3 gameplay videos looked really fast-paced and cool, too.

My question about Sonic is though, wouldn't you prefer a game you actually control rather than just press forward and occassionally press jump to stop yourself from hitting a brick wall? As far as I can tell, most sonics don't really do much other than go fast...?

I know, it's just hard not to compare the two. Seems the PS3 one will be on the shelves in a month and I'm not sure I need 2 sonic games by the time I find a PS3 in the spring :)

Well, that's the point of the game, I guess. Most Sonic games are like high-speed obstacle courses. But I agree, I haven't been too impressed with the recent Sonic games. *remembers Sonic DX on the PC*

This one, on the other hand, might turn out to be pretty cool. As far as I can tell from all the videos, it just throws you head first into crazy environments and forces you to react to them. I believe this is the first major Sonic game in a long time to not include Knuckles and Tails, too.

those screens actually look really good graphically. If the Wii can do push visuals like that I see no problem. I guess the Wii version of Far Cry is the only game that looks like horse shit.

Maybe they'll be able to capture the excitement of this old Sega CD intro clip which shows Sonic in a Dragonball Z type open air environment:

Personally, I stopped looking forward to any 3D Sonic games. I don't care how good the graphics are, if it's not fun it's not a good game.

Ah, Niero, the Sonic CD video brings me back, and I remember how much the music sucked in the japanese/pal version. What the hell were they thinking "Toot toot, Sonic Warriors"? All aboard the homoerotic sonic train.

On a side note, I'm not all worried about the graphics, I just hope this game isn't like Sonic Heroes was, ugh.

You really can't tell that much about graphics just from screenshots, in fairness. Especially when the graphical selling points are speed and environmental interaction. Besides, I think those screens look pretty nice, and you won't have too much time to sit back and admire the textures if everything's rocketing past as fast as it's supposed to.

If the Sonic game for the PS3 weren't the same as the one for the 360, which currently has an average just shy of 60% on Gamerankings, and if the Wii version had actually been reviewed, maybe this article would make sense.

But they're the same, and it does, and it hasn't, and it doesn't. That said, none of these games are going to recapture the awesome that was S3&K anyway. I'll just get that for the VC when it comes out.

I thought much of the Wii version of Sonic was supposed to take place in an "Ali Baba" style setting, and the jungle level was just recently revealed. Since the PS3/360 versions are supposed to be completely different in story & gameplay from the Wii version, hardcore Sonic fans may want to pick up both anyway for the varying experiences.

Always beware babelfish press release translations. :)
