Sonic 4 delayed to late 2010, confirmed for iPhone photo

Sonic the Hedgehog 4, originally scheduled for release next month, has today been delayed by Sega. Hardly surprising, considering the release was creeping ever closer with only leaks and speculation to promote it. The game has now been slated for "late" release this year.

"SEGA is incredibly happy at the overwhelmingly positive response to Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I  from both press and fans around the world, and wants to ensure that we’re delivering the best Sonic experience possible," states Sega. "With this dedication to quality and the Sonic experience in mind, SEGA has decided to extend the development of the game, and will now release Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I in the latter half of 2010."

iPhone users at least got a bit of good news to go with the bad. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has now been officially confirmed for Apple's portable products. Further details on this release will be coming soon.

Whether this delay is in response to some negative comments following the leaks (most notably the infamous "mine cart" section) probably won't ever be confirmed, but hopefully the delays will lead to some positive development time. What do you reckon? Is the delay a good sign of quality control, or an ill portent?

The Mine Cart section effectively ruined my interest in the game.

A delay can only help a game. And in this case, Sonic needs all the help he can get.

* Great. Delay the game to do an iphone port. Because the iphone have the best controls.

This delay doesn't bode well with me. First episode 1 will take a year to finish and then episode 2 will come out in 2012. It's going to repeat Valve's episodic delivery with Half-Life 2, a trilogy that still hasn't come to a close 6 years after Half-Life 2 originally released.

The negative response to the mine cart section was hilarious. People bitched so loudly about something you'd be playing for about a minute.

...But to be fair, it looked like the controls were awful. They should fix it. >_>

Seriously though, I think the bitching about the mine cart section was justified, no matter how small a part of the game it is.

I can't imagine that's going to end well on the iPhone. The controls in Sonic games are bad enough with a gamepad.

Where has this received critical and fan praise? Everywhere I've seen people don't like what sega is doing with this, from the game play to the art style. Are Sega just talking out there asses again?

The people complaining about this were generally 'hardcore' Sonic fans from fansites, who hate everything Sonic related.

Don't assume it's going to be delayed because of the iPhone version. No doubt they are actually trying to make this good. I say judge the game until we/reviewers get it into our/their hands

And there was me thinking there would be a Sega Summer of Arcade on XBLA...

Dreamcast ports of Crazy Taxi, Sonic Adventure, Jet Set Radio Future and maybe Shenmue 1 and 2, followed by episode 1 of Sonic 4 would have been a great summer!

Ahah, I called this coming to the iPhone. After all, Sonics 1 and 2 are already on there, and it won't be long until S3 and S&K are on there (separate downloads) and finally S3&K. :F

Also, can we make "waah minecart" the new "he's the wrong blue" or whatever? Just for shits and giggles, of course.

The leaks obviously were on purpose from Sega so they could get in-depth feedback and go back to make the game perfect. So all the fans who are bitching need to stop cause obviously Sega REALLY cares about you all.

Are some of you people serious? You complaining about delays, and before you complained that the game is not going your way. Don't you see? This is the chance for them to change the game to make it what we want and to make it pure awesome. Think about it, they basically finished episode 1, after all the leaks say so. So what else would they work on in these now 5+ months of development time they just gave themselves?

That's right, fixing everything. Physics, music, graphics, whatever. They could add new content like a classic Sonic mode (no green eyes, Robotnik, etc. etc.) and other stuff too. I personally am excited about this news. I was looking forward to Sonic 4, but now it can possibly be a true successor to Sonic 3. It can play and feel just like the classics I still love to play.

Funny thing is though, this is the first time they've delayed a Sonic game like this with the hopes of improving it. Even the classics suffered from cuts due to time, such as whole levels, and of course Sonic and Knuckles, essentially a patch made for 1994 to complete a game they half finished (Sonic 3). I think this shows that they care, even if just a little, probably because they realize this is like their last chance with so many people. Sonic 4 is a bold statement, it has to live up to what has come before it (And by that I mean the original trilogy. It's not hard to live up to Sonic 06, I could shit in a box and it'd live up to that game)

iPhone games are either 1. Horrible, or 2. Good games made not so good by the horrible platform.

Aside from that I could not care less when it releases. Just that it's good.

SEGA isn't stupid, but that's besides the point... I'm sure SEGA is looking into every bit of positive and negative feedback plastered over the interwebs in hopes of improving the delayed game.
I really believe this fourth entry(in the series) will be one of the best. That is, unless your hopes, dreams and desires are ridiculously over-the-top. Sonic fans should enjoy this. I can't wait! =)

I'm not annoyed in the slightest that it's delayed.

I'm annoyed that the criticisms I have of a 2D sonic revival, that a true 2D sonic sequel would never be episodic nor download only, but would be a complete game with the marketting push of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, is still being ignored.

I don't have the patience for a Half Life, the Episode 3 that will never be made situation. Let alone the fact that this is only a quarter of a 2D Sonic platformer. There is no reason the developement of a quarter of a 2D platformer with a full budget should be delayed past a year of developement time (as I assume they started last summer at the latest). At the very least, I expect a full game when I am told it will be delayed.

Delays suck, but once this game is out and it proves to be good, the wait won't matter though will it?

It really does sound like Sonic Team wants to get this one as right as Sega will allow it to be. I'll welcome a wait for quality.

"wants to ensure that we’re delivering the best Sonic experience possible," states Sega. Really. What have they been doing for the past 30 years? An exaggeration, I know, but still. But guys, come on, this one will be different, it will be on the iphone and ipod touch! It totally won't suck!

Sega also said on GameSpot's On the Spot that the iPhone version will get two exclusive extra levels that the console releases won't get that will use the system's tilt and touch capabilities.

I hope that's code for "We're getting rid of that minecart level and putting it on the iPhone as an exclusive."

Well this is shit.

It's all well and good to envoke the Myamoto mantra, but that requires you to be good at making a game, which sonic team is not.

Why delay it? Get it out, then improve it for episode 2.

Because waiting for the same game with probably MORE mine cart levels sounds as about as appealing as a kick to the balls, in reverse, in cube 2: Hypercube.

I'm disappointed that after 45 comments, no one has yet to point out that SEGA has rushed the release of every Sonic game they've put out since S&K, and that every single one of those games had terrible glitching issues. People, understand that SEGA is trying to learn from their past mistakes. As they should, since this is more or less Sonic's last hurrah, his last chance to rise back into his platform of relevance from which he fell some 16 years ago. Why bitch and moan about the delay when they're merely trying to make it better?

@Huggybear: Are you joking? Sonics 1, 2, and 3 were all under huge deadlines. It's more obvious in sonics 2, 3, and S&K, most obviously in 3. When you look at all the last-second stuff that was removed from 1Sonic 2 and 3, it becomes apparent the time constraints they were under. The fact that sega is letting them take this delay means that they really want this game to succeed. This is good for us, because we get the end product, and they get more time to get it right.
Hcapt's Avatar - Comment posted on 05/21/2010 10:45

@ Namagem - If they wanted this game to succeed, they would give it the same love Nintendo gave New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Sonic and Mario are equals in 2D. Sonic is a title that could easily sell ten million copies, if a good console release of a 2D title was made, as it's only competition on the consoles is Mario. Heck, it even has the fact that it's multi-platform going for it. There is no reason not to treat a "true" 2D revival of Sonic as bigger than Mario.
