Sonic 2's false advertising upsets gamers, Microsoft accused of ripping us off photo

One of the reasons I was so excited for the release of Sonic 2 on Xbox Live Arcade was the fact that 2 player co-op was touted as a feature. Yes, even though nobody would want to play as Tails because he's a vile little gimp mutant, it was still a rather cool idea and would bring me back memories of my brother and I playing Sega together, long before he turned into a quasi-pedophillic psychopath. My yearning to return to a simpler time has, however, been dashed when it was revealed that Sonic 2 had been wrongly promoted on Xbox.com. There was no co-op, despite what customers were told, and those customers aren't too thrilled with Microsoft right now.

The 'Soft has been accused of false advertising by gamers who expected this non-existent feature to be present. While this was more than likely just a silly mistake, clearly there are more than a few people out there who now feel burned. They need to look on the bright side, though. At least they didn't buy Ecco the friggin' Dolphin like I did. What do you think? Do you think that Microsoft swindled its customers and need to make amends, or do you believe that the people who bought it needed to look into things more carefully? Or, like me, do you just wish everyone who developed Ecco the Dolphin died in a swamp? Let us know with your juicy comments.

I like tails.
However, I was pisssed as fuck when I saw it was local co-op. Why do I pay for fucking gold when they give me all these fucking local co-op choices. It's like with boom boom rocket, made no sense.

Seriously, I believe a petition is in order. Or something!

they could make amends by possibly adding coop as a free dl in the future. otherwise its a bad mistake on the soft's side.

The part of the story that most piqued my interest was Lord Sterling's brother. He's a quasi-pedophilic psycho? Please expound on this if you will, Sterling.

Jim, I remeber on the megadrive version the co-op was on 1player, i.e. the second pad controlled Miles... Do you not think thats what they meant, especially if they copied the megadrive lit?

If "Microsoft" was replaced by "Sony", people would be treating this a whole lot differently.

you guys should be thankful it is not the other way around. the new trend seems to be they add online multiplayer, but kill local multiplayer. i'm looking at you Motorstorm, Crackdown, DiRT, and others that slip my mind right now.

Like I always say... online multiplayer with classic ports does not work. Even had they done it, it would have suffered from the same synch issues as any other retro game they do it with.

I doubt it. People are upset about, same as they would be anyway... Plus it's not exactly as civil of a discussion elsewhere.

Personally, I had read enough leading up to this to know that it wouldn't have that. I never even look at those Xbox.com pages lol.

"Fuck the haters, I've been waiting for this one.

I know some people don't give a shit, but I like the extra dinkies that MS throws in like scoreboards, achievements and online play. If any copy of Sonic 2 justified a purchase in this day and age, I'd say it's this one.

Oh, and LOL@ the Virtual Console and it's untouched ROM service."

lol indeed

Who cares? Honestly, who's actually going to want to play Sonic 2 co-op online? Hell, when we were younger we didn't even bother playing it co-op because there was the fact that in most cases Sonic simply leaving Tails behind due to his speed. It was almost as if you weren't playing anyway because you'd be left behind and then have to wait for Tails to fly back on screen and then you'd be left behind again anyway. Complaining over this is just goofy.

By the way, Ecco the Dolphin sucks.

if people payed $5 for Sonic 2 for the multiplayer, they are fucking retarded. Nobody should ever buy Sonic 2 because of the multiplayer. I am going to download this because I want to play Sonic 2, not because I want to have a friend jump around as Tails and talking to me through our headsets.

It's $5. Get over it.

Do people get this uppity and blog spooge all over the internet when Starbucks gives them the wrong flavor latte? I guess that's what MySpace and LiveJournal are for.

Hmm, dolphins. We're are going to need a specialist. Chad, any thoughts on the issue of Ecco the Dolphin? Anyway, I like Sonic and I would play it with or without co-op though it is sad that people feel misled in this situation.

Any form of co-op is fine for me, it would certainly be better than playing with some retarded AI like in the original. The water level was especially painful because tails would die every five minutes but would always steal air bubbles when I needed them.

I dunno, it's really no big loss. If you look at the online verses mode, the sync is terrible, so whoever plays as Tails is probably going to hurt you more than help you.

This is indeed how it was done, I have the Sonic Mega Collection. Is there just not an option to pick Sonic & Tails as your character? If so, that sucks a nut. The co-op isn't life-changing or anything, but it is a good time, especially during boss fights. And player 2 can jump in and jump out whenever they want.
