Sonic 2 HD is an unofficial HD reworking of the classic SEGA Genesis title, Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Of course, the name of the project more or less gives that away, but it's no less exciting. Headed up by the perpetually friendly, outgoing and emotionally stable folk at Sonic Retro, this game has a lot of fans fapping already.
According to the teaser site, big things are coming in twelve days. The project has been dark for quite some time, so we can expect some big reveals coming soon. Between this and Sonic Fan Remix, it seems that the unofficial portion of the Sonic franchise has a lot of awesomeness happening.
You may now proceed to comment about how "sad" it is that the fans are doing better than SEGA, as is the custom.

There is no way such a light hedgehog can gain the momentum and terminal velocity as he does in the games.
Sonic Retro is still awesome. Too bad I don't visit their forums much nowadays.

Quality is subjective to each individual.
Some people may prefer the official sonic games over the fan made ones. Some may prefer the fan made ones. Preference does not imply factual quality.
I'm not taking the piss out of you bit I've got to ask....is your enjoyment of sonic slightly ruined by the fact that his super speed is never accounted for?

I was only jokin. Really though, I don't know if Sega could ever make a Sonic game that pleases the fans. And no, I never want them to explain why Sonic is fast(comics aside). That would be like giving Sonic a human girlfriend.
No, the physics in Sonic 4 are fine, and whoever complains about them probably shouldn't be allowed to play games anyway.
when you consider that one side is putting up a product in their spare time that is competing (in at least some peoples eyes) with the bigger budget products from full studios whom entire job focuses on putting out big budget products... that leads to some speculation.
