This just goes to show you how out of touch I am with Sonic the Hedgehog fans. I had no idea there was a contingent of people out there who seem to despise the way Dimps has been treating the speed freak. I suppose it was to be expected but I would think that they would at least be happy that they're getting games which aren't developed by Sonic Team.
Apparently not. The above video is a trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 "Dimps Edition", a ROM hack of the aforementioned game which adds features of the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 4 in an effort to point out how awful they are. Watch as Sonic runs through one speed launcher after another, flies into foes with his homing attack and neglects his responsibilities as a paternal figure for young Miles Prower.
If you want to try the hack out for yourself, its creator has made it available for download. I'm not going to try it myself, as I'm already awful at Sonic 2 without having to deal with what appears to mostly be extra detritus on the road but you're certainly welcome to try. Anybody grabbing it? Any impressions?

Er, I guess I can't really tell the major differences, did they just want a remake of sonic 2 and have that be forever? Pretty sure they wouldn't be happy with that either.
So, their point is pretty non-existent. "WAHHH! THERE ARE SPEED BOOSTS AND HOMING ATTACKS IN SONIC 4!"
Considering that Dimps isn't remaking a Sonic game I don't see how this crappy video proves anything. Sonic 4 is going to be made with these things in mind; it's not like they were an afterthought. Fucking Sonic fanboys. Jesus.
@invisiman: It's not necessarily what they want but they want something that feels exactly like it. Dimps is often considered the 2D Sonic god send, but in reality it's not really. Sure, Sonic Rush and the Sonic Advance series were all pretty good, but besides Sonic Advance 1 and the earlier Sonic Pocket Adventure, none of the games represent classic Sonic gameplay. They all add boosting and extra moves and boost pads and bottomless pits and the like. None of them feel like old Sonic games either. One of the complaints some of the fans have is how similar Sonic 4 feels to Sonic Rush. That's not to say it is Sonic Rush, but it isn't too hard to notice some of the similarities in the game engines.
Granted most people are fine with Sonic 4. I'm ok with it, I would of had it been a full game that was made in the same art style as Rayman Origins, but it's not and I'm not too upset with the direction they took the game in (except maybe the soundtrack). But some people really wanted to have a more retro Sonic 4, some to the point where they might just want a Sonic 2 hack perhaps, but it's the feel of the game that's important, and Dimps wasn't exactly spot on this time around.
Also another common thing with Sega has been Sonic only gameplay. This is nice, but many liked the other characters too. I'm not talking about bringing back SA1 gameplay types but more like Sonic 3 where everyone played like Sonic except with different moves
Wow... These fanboys are absolutely pathetic and I'm not even gonna say that they should play the original games because it's been said already. So I'd say ignore them if they're gonna be the whiny kids they are.
I guess I don't understand what they're bitching about?
Is it because you got stuck in a trap where two springs/speed boosters were shooting you back and forth? Yeah, ok, that's never happened before. I can even think of a specific example in Carnival Night (that's Zone 4), maybe even one example in both acts, but the one I'm thinking of has you bouncing around under water while those little shocker bastards shoot sparks at you.
What's wrong with a homing attack?
I guess I don't have enough hate for Sonic to be a fan of Sonic...
...I'll play Sonic 4 when I get it.
I think they are complaining how Dimps sonic titles lack platform elements from the older sonics and instead focus on speed and flashy ways to zoom though the level.
I like both classic sonic and the dimps gba/ds games, but I guess with the title being Sonic 4 they were hoping it would play more like genesis sonic.
@LeXxX: Yep, you got it. Thing is too if this game wasn't called Sonic 4 none of these things would bother people as much. Also the game probably wouldn't have had as much attention. Regardless, they took a gamble calling this Sonic 4 and we'll have to see how it works out
they are trying to point out that sonic 1/2/3/knuckles were platformers not running at full speed from left to right just holding down one button. me personally is still hoping to get sonic 1/2/3/knuckles remastered in 2.5D like street fighter 4, but that will never happen
Are they trying to say the homing attack would make the classics too easy? Because yes, if you add a new ability to a game where it doesn't belong, it will make it easier.
If it doesn't give you a letter grade after you beat a stage and doesn't have a trick based scoring / Boosting system Ala Sonic Rush, then it's not a dimps game.
O_o Umm...that didn't look much like a Dimps game. There was too much stopping and platforming. Their Sonic games are usually designed to be zoom zoom at all times. I enjoyed the hell out of Sonic Rush, but even I would agree they games difficulty was far too easy because of this.
Honestly, I'm looking forward. I don't think it's going to necessarily be awesome in its quality (the game looks cheap as hell), but it'll at least be more fun than most Sonic games have been in recent years.
The Homing attack is an Easy Button. Jump in the air, press Jump repeatedly, and watch things die. In the old Sonic's you had to actually use skill to pull off something like what you see at the 3:20 mark in this video. I can understand needing something like the homing attack on the 3D games, but on the 2D games it just ruins gameplay. If you still don't understand why this is bad for gameplay, imagine if Mario in Super Mario Bros 3 had a Homing stomp attack if you pressed jump twice.
The speed is another example. The latest Sonic's focus so much on how fast it is that you rarely do anything but hold right and hit the jump button twice. hell, it's got to the point where he doesn't even need to be in a ball anymore because his new powerups make him run so fast the enemies fly all over the place. still confusing you, Imagine Mario going invincible anytime he runs at full speed in Super Mario Bros 3.
i dont get it, looks pretty much the same to me. i never got into sonic. i feel it kinda sucked. he cant even walk up a slight incline once he slows down to much. and dont even try to jump up that hill cause it will only make you go down it because you dont have enough blast processing to get up the hill.
@Matthew Blevins: There are actually other efforts beyond ROM hacks. I forget what it's called but there is an impressive 3D Sonic mod in the works I forget what it was game it was based off of though. There has also been significant progress in hacking Sonic Adventure DX for the PC.
However remember most of the ROMS posted on this site are gag ROMS. There are some very technically impressive Sonic hacks, specifically Sonic 1 Megamix comes to mind and Sonic 2 Retro Remix, which are almost complete overhauls of the games. In fact Megamix was actually ported to the Sega CD
Sonic fans are the biggest cry babies ever? What I wouldn't give for Sega to just go "alright, its cancelled." then just not release anything. They'd all complain just as much.
I dont understand all the sonic hate going on in here. I love sonic games. I get what they are bitching about in this video... its the fact that the difficulty level has just been thrown out the window and thats what made a lot of the sonic games fun. Maybe its just me.
Also... theres some great sonic rom hacks out there like sonic extended edition that takes levels from the beta games as well as unfinished levels (put together for the rom).
I couldn't make it through the first minute. Congratulations to the makers of this video for solidifying Sonic fans' title as the whiniest bitches in the history of video games.
after watching the video, i conclude that sonic fans are, indeed, the whiniest, B-------, self-entitled crybabies of the entire gaming world. and here i thought that title belonged to the good people of no mutants allowed or Diablo fans. maybe they are in the same group?
PS. if you really think that dimps sucks balls, which i do not, then try developing a videogame yourself. good, now try to make a good one. not as easy as it sounds so until you can say what it is like to develop a game, you have absolutely no right in cursing dimps actions.
PPS i fin the editions to sonic 4 will make it BETTER that previous iterations
What a whiny baby. They're like "LOOK HOW BAD THIS IS" and it wasn't even that bad. They bitch about the soundtrack, the music doesn't change at all so we've only been listening to the one. They bitch about the homing attack and then don't show their point at all. They bitch about the level design, but they're still using the sonic 2 levels in the video.
Maybe if Sonic 2 had him constantly stopping to talk to deviantart sonic recolors and had him talk to some mary-sue fanfiction character they'd have liked it more. I mean that's pretty much Sonic 2006...
I played it, whats wrong with it? It was functional and the homing attack actually added a nice layer of ease, though I'm sure most people would not like.
I'm not sure how any of the new features made the game worse, I actually liked it. Sure, it takes time to really get used to those controls, but once you nailed it down and sucked up the difficulty, its quite fun. The music is a good change form the usual affair, I'm just sad they removed Tails in this one.
I'm not trying to churn the pot here but Sonic 2 was one of those games I played obsessively as a kid. Watching that video made a lot of sense to me mostly because of how the player is just flying through the levels with relatively little difficulty. Many of the unique level challenges were completely circumvented. First and foremost Sonic is a platformer, not a speed simulator.
Let's be honest. I think this proves that Sonic truly has the biggest and best draw as a character in videogames history. What other character can put out so many crappy games, take so much abuse from his "fans", and still be making games? If people dumped on say, Megaman, this much, 9 and 10 never would have come out. I truly think that some fans will only be happy when the next sonic game is literally Sonic 2 for the Genesis.
Oh my god these people to stop fucking whining like children about the new sonic games. I've never seen any group of people complain so much about upcoming games in their favorite series, its seriously pathetic.
As a person who still plays Sonic 2 regularly... this dimps hack looks really unfun. They proved their point. Auto-targeting? Removes the challenge from fighting enemies and dodging projectiles. It also takes away from grabbing the items. The speed boosters just put you through the level.
Honestly, it looks like you can just hold left and tap a rhythmically and beat the game. That's not what the original sonic games were about, go back and play them if you don't believe me (btw, green hill zone or all variants don't count. I'm talking about the later levels.)
Considering Dimps made the Sonic Advance & Rush games, which were great & better than the consoles games, I actually think the Sonic 2 hack would be fun to play, & as soon as I heard they were developing Sonic 4, my hopes for a good console Sonic game grew.
Sonic Advance was fun, I dunno if it was better than the console games... I mean they are kind of the original. It's hard to beat the original creator in essence.
So many of these comments are just "LOL FANBOI" comments. If you can't tell the difference in gameplay between newer Sonics and classic Sonics then you can't really contribute past conjecture. Just imagine your personal favorite game series, and then imagine that they took that formula you love and turned it into super easy mode with no option to ramp the difficulty back up. I don't think it takes a fanboy to be peeved at that.
IF YOU SHOEHORN NEWER FEATURES INTO OLDER GAMES, MUCH OF THE DIFFICULTY DISAPPEARS.
Yeah, if you added mario's spin attack from galaxy into SM64 the game would be a hell of a lot easier. Because it wasn't designed for it. Just because some obsessives have spent hours watching an early version of the game doesn't mean the game, when released, will be bad. We know it will be different, but they never claimed to be doing the full mega man 9. They're adapting a classic style with some modern touches.
Also, the music in that video has to come from the 6th layer of hell. If that's real Sonic 4 music, I guess I will have to pass on the game.
Well the video is less about shoehorning features in and more about highlighting the differences in level design I think. Mario level design doesn't need to change much to incorporate his spin attack. Meanwhile Sonic's newfound focus on just going right and homing in on shit is a clear departure from its old platforming gameplay.

The raccoon's tail from Mario 3 surely would have ruined the original, amirite?
Just go play Sonic 1,2 and 3 if it bothers you that much. If you get the MD collection you need never make pointless hacks or videos again.
Meanwhile, I cant WAIT to play Sonic 4 (episode 1...)

I have to hold right and press A twice in a row to complete this one?
SONIC IS RUINED.

It'll be exactly like that one, but with crappy cutscenes, 2 new animal friends, and an all new soundtrack by Crush 40.
Despite it having the whiniest, most petulant and fucking self-entitled bunch of crying little princess fanboys on the planet.
This video is full of hyperbole, and whoever put it together should stop fisting themselves.

I hope Sonic 4 turns out well and even when if it's the best game of the year someone will complain.

i would have to take this vid as evidence that people against DIMPs are just clueless fanboys.
